Sewage Removal - Why Leave It to the Experts?

Many homeowners would rather do water removal or cleaning up after a flood themselves. Some think they can handle the job on their own while others are trying to save money because they do not have or do not have sufficient home insurance policy to cover it. This is quite understandable. However, when it comes to sewage removal, smart homeowners know that this is a job meant for the pros.

What causes sewage backup

The problem can be from the main sewage line of your city or just in your private line. If your neighbours are also experiencing the same dilemma, chances are, it is in the main line but if it is only your house that is affected, it must be from your own sewage line. You can report main sewage problem to the city administrators but still, you will have to take care of the mess that is already in your home.

To prevent your own sewage line from backups, avoid flushing objects in the toilet. If you accidentally threw something, call a pro at once if you cannot retrieve the item. Also, the kitchen sink is not the place to wash out grease and oil. When these accumulate, it can harden and clog pipes. Proper disposal of garbage is necessary to avoid facing sewage removal.. Place used oil and grease in a plastic jar or any sealable container and bring it to a landfill or throw at bins designated for such waste. You can also create a compost pit to make disposal more convenient.

Knowing the risks

Sewage does not only smell awful but it is a health hazard too. Do not let children or sick family members near the affected area as bacteria, virus and even parasites may be present. These can quickly spread. In fact, even healthy people should take precaution when handling sewage. It is important to note that you don't necessarily have to touch sewage to become ill. Skin contact or hand to mouth isn't the only way as some people can get sick by merely inhaling sewage as mist or dust.

Examples of illnesses a person may get from sewage are asthma attacks, hepatitis, gastroenteritis and skin and eye infections. Considering health risks and hospital bills, it is understandable that a job like sewage removal be relegated to the pros.
