"Building Your "Pitch"

Comments (20)

The first thing that any potential customer, buyer, listener or recruit will look at is the quality of the message. So, when you start thinking of promoting your product, idea, thought or service or message, you have to think about how attractive that message is to the general public.

Q: What is the first thing you look for when you go to an advertiser's site? A: Information.

That's right: information. Whether it be information about the product or information about the producer, either way, you are looking for information. So, naturally, before that advertiser ever sent out that advertisement, he had to make sure that the information was there for you to follow through with if he hoped to make a sale.

This means, in plain english, if you have a message to your customers that you want them to follow through with, you have to tell them what the message is in simple terms. And then, if you want the listener or reader to do something with that message, you have to explain it to them so that it is easy for them to understand and follow through with.

After all, what happens when you get to that advertiser's site and the product is not there? Suppose you see a picture of the product, but no information about how to purchase it? Would you buy it upon looking at first glance? In your busy day, would you look around the website for a few minutes to try to figure out how to purchase it? Would you find an email address and write to the advertiser and ask? Most people would not. Most potential customers would simply go to the next site or the next email if what they see from a first impression is not what they expect.

Suppose that the message WAS there? Suppose you saw the product, and you read about how great that product was and what it could do. Then, suppose you were really hyped up about that product, but could find no information about what to do in order to get that product for yourself. The advertiser just lost a sale. In about three or four weeks, you will go to your local shopping center and then you may see that product. Chances are, you will buy that product from them. But, the advertiser who sold the product to you will get nothing to support the advertising dollars that they spent telling you about the product.

If you own your own web site, and you spend quite a bit of time maintaining the information on that website, then you understand the frustration that comes with telling someone about a great book and having them buy it from another bookstore rather than you, so you can support your work. That's why making sure you give your potential recruits the information they need is important. Most people, by nature, want to support something they believe in. If you don't offer them a way to do that, they won't.

So the best way to get your message out is not only to have a message, but to be able to present that message in as simple of terms as possible, so that the potential recruits have only minimal work to do for themselves in order to follow through.

Let's take a look at where we are now:

1.) First you have to have a product, idea, thought or service.

Without this step, none of the others matter.

2.) Then you have to make that product, idea, thought or service available to the public.

The message has to be easy to understand, and simple to follow.

I can't recall how many times I've visited a website that had lots of information on it that didn't make sense. The cause was just, I'm sure, but the presentation of the information was so hard to follow that I would skip the whole message and go on to the next web site.

How many of you have ever read the Bible all the way through? If you weren't a literary person who enjoyed Shakespeare or any of the other classic literature, then you probably are thinking, "Not me, all those thees and thous and whatsoevers get me confused." There are a lot of great web sites out there who are very information-oriented, but forget that most people are straight forward people who want simplicity.

When I was a child, my mother worked full time. So, to help ease her burden, she decided to let me do the cooking so when she came home, dinner was already done and ready to eat. She would set out a peace of paper with instructions for me to follow each day when I came home from school. It would look something like this:

Please make sure you put a load of clothes in the washer. There are some clothes on the bed that need to be folded. When you are done with that, clean that mess off the coffee table. Then you can start cooking at 5pm.

Here is what we are having for dinner tonight: Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes.

To fix the meatloaf, first you will need to get all your ingredients together.

(I'm going to skip this part because I think you got the idea)

One of the ingredients happened to be diced onions. Keep in mind, for a nine year old who had a limited vocabulary but a high IQ, which my mom knew I had because of previous testing at school and arguments with school administrators who wanted to skip me up a grade or two, I had no idea what "diced" meant. I sat there dumb-founded for the longest time, trying to figure out what "diced" meant. Finally, I knew it was going to get me in trouble, but I figured I'd be in more trouble if I didn't get dinner fixed, I called my mom at work.

Of course, she answered with: "YOU CALLED ME AT WORK JUST TO ASK ME WHAT DICED MEANT?" and then told me to look it up in the dictionary. DOH!

But the point is, had I not had my backside to worry about, I probably would have never had supper done that night. Most of your readers don't have backsides to worry about, (some of them simply are...but we won't go into that here...) and if you don't tell them in simple terms the first time, they'll probably just go somewhere else.

How can i build a professional size pitchers mound in my own yard? my yard is plenty big to create a professional bulpen, but i need to know how to build a mound that will hold up, and i need to know wut materials to use.

Admin 14.04.2006. 19:20

Get a landscaper to do it. Get a copy of the Official Rules of Baseball from the Sporting News, and give that to the guy. He can craft a mound for you. The dimensions are very exact, so make sure he follows them, especially:

The mound is an 18' diameter dirt circle.

You'll want a home plate, too; it is 60' 6" from the front edge of the pitching rubber to the back point of home.

There is a flat area on top of the mound measuring 34" by 60"; see that he places the rubber in the right spot within that flat area per the book... :)

What is the best substitute for Hearing Problems? I am having difficulty in listening the low pitch sounds. I want to know the best treatment for this. Please help me out. I am 34 years old.

Admin 06.08.2007. 07:55

first off go to your doc and see if you have a build-up of wax in your ears. if you do, he can drain this right in the office. if this is not the problem or your hearing doesn't improve either call an audiologist or get a referral from your doc to one. at the audiologist, you will have testing done where you will listen for tones(like the ones you have in school) and most likely a speech recognition threshold test where you will have to repeat words back to the audiologist as she gives them at different decibel levels. they may also give you a tympanogram test which is a little nub they put in your ears for a couple seconds that measures your middle ear pressure to make sure there is not a blockage or fluid in the ears. if it is determined that you have a hearing loss you will get a referral for a hearing aid. they have different types of aids now, the standard ones outside the ear, in the ear ones, and digital in the ear ones (although digital can be quite expensive). also try not to use headphones to listen to music, don't turn music in your car up too loud, or at least don't expose yourself to it for an extended time. if you are using something that is loud, like mowing the lawn or shooting a gun, etc... make sure to wear ear plugs. exposure to sounds higher than 85 decibels for long amounts of time can cause a noise induced hearing loss so it is important to protect your ears. Good Luck and God bless you!!

Do you think all new build houses should have solar panels fitted? Don't you think it would be a good idea if the Government made it compulsory to have all new build houses fitted with solar panels? If everyone had solar panels, the price of them would come right down.
What do you think?

Admin 03.09.2011. 20:55

Simply, not every house will be a compatible match for solar.

Solar needs sunlight. If a roof surface is not in the correct 40 degree sun path facing magnetic south, then modifications have to be made to build up and angle panels so they do. This can cost more than the energy ever produced for the home. That is an unfair burden to add those costs to that homeowner. The ideal home will face south with a 40 degree pitch to the roof. Can you imagine every house from here forward with a plain gable roof all faced south?

In addition, trees could become an obstruction. Planting designs would have to eliminate any tree that would grow higher than roofline and shade the panel array. Passive solar methods like tree lines have been used for years to help summer cooling costs.

Geothermal systems are working very well in Colorado which suffers severe weather mood swings between hot and cold. A new energy efficient home built in the foot hills just proved its capabilities. The annual heating costs for this 2000 sq foot home was $34.00. Yes, $34.00 for the entire year. That system also heats the water used to bathe and shower in.

The cost of that system paid for itself in the first 2 years making this one of the best investments on the market. I say skip the stock market! Homes, including those in the City, can be designed with either a horizontal or vertical system.

Eastern Colorado is finding great success with small wind turbines making them more affordable than a typical solar panel array.

At this point, no, I don't see this becoming a mandatory situation. But, the solar manufacturers have been supported and are working for grid autonomy meaning the panels should be as cost effective to install as hooking up to your local power. The solar industry knows it has to become more competitive. It's very survival depends on it and we are already seeing drops in pricing.

Let me point out that Solar is still a good return on investment "for the right house".

The energy efficiency approach is based on Best Practice. That means, one system like solar will not work as the solution for everyone. Building codes like plumbing and sanitary systems are because of safety and health reasons but they dont mandate this product or that product. Just that the products must be safety tested to meet certain standards. They do mandate that solar follow NFPA and NEC codes (National Fire Protection Association and National Electric Code) and be installed by a Master Electrician... again for safety reasons. Geothermal be installed by a licensed Master HVAC and a Certified driller. For, you got it, safety reasons.

Where can a family with three dogs go where the dogs can run and we can play? I have this fantasy that my family goes camping with our three dogs. We pitch our tents, build a fire, walk the dogs and play in the water. However, you can't take dogs or they have to be on 6 foot leashes. We live in Temecula and are willing to drive two hours. That is San Diego - La - Idyllwild - Mt. Baldy. Any suggestions.

Is there any free camping country out there?

Liquid Star

Admin 14.06.2011. 01:21

Almost free camping can be found in any of the dispersed area's of the national forests throughout southern california some you can drive right too some you have to hike in. A favorite area I like to take my dogs is up behind Big Bear in the Holcomb valley I can take my truck and camper and park right near a pond that the dogs love to chase ducks in. All you need is the adventure pass $30 a year $5 a day. technically you still have to abide by the leash laws no matter where you go but i have never encountered a ranger there or any folks who care let alone to many folks at all.

What French song did the Northolt High School Choir sing at the World Choir Games in 2006? On the BBC's show The Choir, Gareth Malone takes pupils from the Northolt High School to the World Choir Games in China in 2006 and I was wondering what French song they sang during the competition. Thank you for your responses.
Sorry - just to clarify The Choir is actually on the BBC2 network.

Admin 02.08.2010. 07:45

Cantique de Jean Racine by Berger. Done it tons of times with my kids over the years - we all have.

We are nobody special, and hardly unique. There are four of us in this family who are full-time choral directors (husband and I are now retired, and our son and DIL are working.) We have been in similar positions a LOT - no decent predecessor in the district, and we must create gold from straw. This show had LOTS of flaws and omissions - who PAID for them to go to China??? What is the competition that NO choir from the UK had ever entered - when the UK has generations of fine choral groups? In the aspect of daily rehearsal work, why (and do not tell me it was solely because of the pressure of time) were so many factors *let go* - posture, diction, pitch, support, etc? Why did we not ever SEE any meaningful exercises? I know that the series had to be heavily edited, and we did see progress - but we saw in Malone, things that any choral director in a school here in the US could fix. I spent my career in inner-city schools, so my teaching situation was not unlike his - maybe worse some days - and all of us in the district got it done. Did Malone not KNOW that he might have been giving the kids a good learning experience but entering any kind of competition (that had the Youth Choir category from 12 to 25 years of age????) would just be throwing them under the bus? And was he EVER going to teach Chloe to count correctly in her solo - and not still belt and swoop???

This show was like the movie "Mr. Holland's Opus" - the general public thinks it is wonderful, meaningful - and those of us in the business are rolling our eyes. After Malone left - no chorus. Dead. Done. Mr Holland works his butt off (although he got into teaching for a questionable reason - no gigs!!), and then his program is cut. Dead. Done. My husband retired after 34 years of building a program out of nothing to having kids in All-State- and now because of the economy, his former program is gone. Dead. Done. And this story is hardly unique - it is happening all over.

You can see that this irked us - and countless others who saw it. Many folks I know said "I'll pass . . " when asked if they were going to watch. Wanna hear good singing by youth? Get yourself to a good LOCAL HS or MS - you do not have to watch BBC when great stuff is happening in your own neighborhood. And above this desk, is a plaque thanking me for a career in which I not only taught music but rescued kids from falling through the cracks in school by getting their butts into my choral groups and making them do the work until they LOVED to do the work. There are THOUSANDS like me - I am nobody special. We do this for the kids we teach - we have our own professional music life outside, to keep us sane. We organize All-County, Area, All-State, All-US as volunteers - and THEN have kids here on YA fight with us because they HATE JUDGES . . . nice . . .

So - if you were interested in the show - go check out REALITY - not a reality show.

Whew - that felt good . . . .

What are the differences between Tim Lincecum and Roy Oswalt? They are often compared and I want to know what's the differences between the two players?

Admin 24.01.2012. 23:26

The only reason that they are compared is that they are both short pitchers with a small build.

Here are the differences.

1. Lincecum is younger. Oswalt is 34 years old, Lincecum is only 27.

2. Oswalt has 3 All Star game appearances in 11 MLB Seasons. Lincecum has made the All Star team in all 4 of his full seasons.

3. Lincecum is a two time Cy Young award winner, Oswalt has never won a Cy Young, although he has finished in the top 5 of the votes several times.

4. Lincecum has an un-orthodox pitching delivery, whereas Oswalt has a very compact and simple one.

Other than both being very good, smaller pitchers they have little in common

What do people think of a German male dating a Mexican female? I'm from Germany who moved to the United States. I was very heart broken at first since I left a lot of my friends and families behind back in Germany. There was this one latina that I've been friends with since we were High School students, we eventually build a "Brother-Sister" bond and always run to each other for help when needed. She's like me, we're both insecure about ourselves, we have suicidal thoughts, and feel very much lonely on the inside. The difference is that she expressed herself, people ignored her and she ended up hurting herself and plans on suicide before going into therapy. We became friends when I tried making her day better by humming "Ode to Joy" since making a stranger's day better would make me happy. We kept talking after that and became good friends.

By the time we became Sophomores, we became very close and often call each other by our nickname as if our real names never existed. We are very alike and often have our time of abysmal lows often leading to one of us wishing to suicide or isolate ourselves from the world. She is always insecure about "thin, pretty girls" even though she is not even overweight, she is marginally below average since I can pinch her belly which I like to do since it's cute, neither flabby nor bone thin, plus hugging her feels so much better than hugging bone girls. We both have similar issues yet we are capable of helping each other about it. We both have conflicting genres of music since I'm in the Heavy Metal, Classical, and Punkrock scene while she mostly listens to Punk and Indie and I tend to make snide jokes about Indie music. I helped her with her emotional and mental stress and am a comfort for her while she does the same to me. I do notice she is always excited to see me and I enter a state of euphoria whenever I hear her usual pitched "hi!".

I truly care for her, I accidentally fell for her after seeing how much we relate and how she reminds me of myself as if I was meant to meet her. I was the only one willing to listen to her "woman's nag" and worked to the inch of my life to improve her own life at my expense, I want to be with her even if I have to cut off my arms and legs. We both aspire to be veterinarians and I've never felt as happy in life as when she is around, I would be dead a long time ago if she wasn't there. Some Mexicans in my area would prefer me to stay with my "own" women (Euro-Americans, not German). However, this is a small minority of Mexicans, I wish to know what do other Mexicans think. Are we depicted as bad boyfriends or horrible companions? I'm 190cm (6'2) and she is 170cm (5'5), is this a big hinderance? What do you think about German-Mexican relations? I've had feelings for her for 3 years and I can already tell there is one other man trying to woo her, I don't want him to have her but I don't want to strain our friendship either.

Admin 16.11.2012. 05:15

Of course it will work out between you! It's worked for my husband and I. He's German and I'm Native American (blackfoot) and Irish...

Some Mexicans in my area would prefer me to stay with my "own" women (Euro-Americans, not German): Yes, from what I've noticed many Latinos prefer to date within their own culture...

Are we depicted as bad boyfriends or horrible companions: As you very well know, Germans (especially if you live in the U.S.) are stereotyped as evil, angry, hateful, etc. It has nothing to do with you. But when a persons ONLY knowledge of german culture is what they've seen in cheap WW2 films then, this is what you'll get. But your generation has become more culturally accepting than mine, you may not have to experience such harsh prejudice. lol my poor husband had been put through the ringer when he moved to the states. But we got over it! So can you!

Besides! Who the f**k cares! What other people think of your relationship doesn't matter! When you fall in love with someone, the two of you become the only two human beings on this planet. Every other problem or worry dissipates.

I'm 190cm (6'2) and she is 170cm (5'5), is this a big hinderance?: not at all! My husband is 6'5 (I guess in Germany they use special fertilizer to get you guys to grow so damn tall!) and I'm 5'7... Any girl (no matter how short) likes a tall man!

What do you think about German-Mexican relations?: The image that I have in my head of you two. You guys make a beautiful couple.

I can already tell there is one other man trying to woo her I don't want him to have her but I don't want to strain our friendship either.: *shrugs* decent men are hard to come by now-a-days. She'll figure out who the true man is. I wouldn't worry to much about him. but tread carefully, if you tell her you don't like him then that makes you the bad guy. Just stay by her side. Keep your friendship a top priority (even if you do become an item). Girlfriends/Boyfriends come and go but friends seem to be there forever.
The one thing that really concerns me is the depression the both of you are experiencing. you need to help each other through your battles with depression. I know how much it hurts to be depressed. I'm convinced that depression is something that all people have (in some form). It's simply a part of life. Its just my point of view, perhaps I'm wrong. But with help you can find a way to live with your depression. But please, I'm begging you. Don't harm yourselves and for the love of god don't give up! My grandfather comit suicide when I was about 12. He was my idol and my hero (for many reasons) and suddenly, unexplainably he was gone. I miss him so bad it hurts, even at the age of 34 I've never really gotten over it. Hell, even now that I'm typing this I've started crying lol.

What are 10 bible passages that refer to the desert? like the chapter and section and verses, what are they? or where could i find a website to tell me that at least?

Job 24:5 Behold, [as] wild asses in the desert, go they forth to their work; rising betimes for a prey: the wilderness [yieldeth] food for them [and] for [their] children.

Isa 21:1 The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass through; [so] it cometh from the desert, from a terrible land.

Isa 34:14 The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest.

Isa 35:1 The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.

Isa 35:6 Then shall the lame [man] leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.

Isa 40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Isa 41:19 I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shittah tree, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, [and] the pine, and the box tree together:

Isa 43:19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, [and] rivers in the desert.

Isa 43:20 The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, [and] rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen.

How do I reduce computer noise? this is my setup
condenser microphone-> amp -> laptop
i know that the noise is coming from the laptop, because if I unplug the mic the noise is still there.
It is like a medium high pitched noise with a buzz. kind of sounds like a really old scanner or something.
i am trying to record some vocals but i can't get rid of this noise. what am i doing wrong?

Admin 25.07.2010. 05:54

Either your computer isn't compatible with the microphone, your set up has some flaw, or the
computer you are using can't support the software it's running.
Also, if your trying to record some vocals in a home studio and can't afford/build a
recording booth with proper insulation, get an insulation or some sort of noise cancellation
for unwanted outside noise.

Sometimes you have to make sure the computer is capable of handling all the processes
a Digital Audio Workstation makes. Daw's like Ableton Live, Cakewalk, Protools, Acid, and so
on can use computer recourses heavily and make it so that your Computer CPU and RAM
are running at the fullest, which is a problem due to the fact that if you don't have a recording booth,
your mic is going to be recording that too, and also because that causes buzz, hizz and other
unwanted noises on the computer. Oh, Fruiti loops Studio too.
Best bet when that happens is to get a new computer. Hopefully something not pricey.
Macs are good but pricey.
If your willing to invest, this is not a bad computer to record music on, provided you already
have a studio set up to which you would sync with this.
Fast Processor, Plenty Ram, Big screen to manage several audio windows, and enough
space to store music files.

The way you explain your setup is kind of weird to. Do you have the microphone connected to
a PA or Mixer Console of some sort that is in turn connected to the laptop?
Are you using a pre-amp setup? Perhaps a MIDI interface?
If not, here are some good ones.

Make sure you are using a balanced XLR or 1/4 inch Cables.
The 1/4 is going to have to be TRS, no TS. or TRRS.
This just means Tip, Ring, Sleeve, which is what the 1/4 connector looks like
because it has a tip, separated by a ring which starts another area, only to be
separated by another ring and then the long sleeve.
Should have two black rings and look like this.

Question about building a storage shed and roof pitch.? I don't know much about building so I could use your help.
Imagine that the roof of a storage shed has one full 4x8 sheet of plywood on each side.
What would the dimensions of the shed have to be and what is the pitch of the roof? I'm looking width and depth or length, however you want to look at it.
Thanks in advance for all replies.

Admin 20.08.2009. 22:58

with just one sheet per side, your shed would need to be less than 7' wide, or deep.
4' wide, would be a 12 pitch, 45 degree angle roof,
5' wide a 9 pitch, almost a 34 degree angle,
6' wide, a 6 pitch, 22.5 degree angle,
7' wide, a 3 pitch, approx. 11 degree angle, and
8' wide would be a flat roof, no angle.
hope this is what you were looking for, good luck, car dude.
