Goal Setting - Road Map to Success

By: Roger Clark

Goal Setting & Research

You can only set informed career goals if you acquire plenty of information about the career choices open to you. This will require research which can be conducted online or through a local library. You can also visit professional career planning offices to find out about the services they offer.

While goal setting, you should consider all possible alternatives available to you

Maybe some career that you never thought of before, will appear as the right choice for you.

Goal setting can give you the direction that ultimately leads you to achieving your desired career goals.

Job seekers looking for a transition into a new career need to take time to begin their goal setting process.

Types Of Goals

There are two types of goal setting, short term and long term. Short term goals are the things you want to accomplish before three years. Long term goals are the things you will be working to accomplish through many years.

Besides your professional goals, you should also take into account the personal goals you want to accomplish over a period of time .

Your personal goals may involve your family, relationships, travel, education you want to complete and leisure time you want to set aside. Your personal and professional goals are intertwined and are an important part of the goal setting process.

Decision Time...

After your research, you will have to make a decision. The decision should take into account not only the end goal but your path towards achieving that goal. You should write down the goals so you can map your way to achieving them.

Your goal setting exercises should help develop well defined goals, instead of general and imprecise ones

It is important that you realize your commitment to the goals you have set for yourself. You will be highly committed if the goals you set are something you really want to accomplish.

Make Your Goals Realistic

If your goals are too hard to accomplish, you will be constantly falling short.

You probably want to become CEO the first year you start working for a company. The goal might be highly tempting but probably not realistic.

You also need to set you goals to be fairly challenging, rather than just sticking to simple and easy to attain goals.

How does a financial plan fit into reaching goals? We all dream of living an amazing life. We all have different ideas about what our future will be. How does a financial plan fit into reaching those goals? How should your goals be defined? Do we all define success in the same way? How does planning help you reach your success?

Admin 07.03.2012. 04:32

Financial goal setting is the first step in designing a financial plan. The goals one sets will very much be affected by your stage in life and can change over time. For example a young married couple expecting their first child will have different financial goals from a middle aged couple whose children just finished college. Their long term goals and short term goals are very different. Their ideas of financial success are unique to their situations.

Planning gives them a road map of how they will reach their short and long term goals.

Thinking of getting a tattoo on my back behind my arm or on my rib cage of a word, phrase or quote. Any ideas? Nothing too long. I love things in different languages and like the idea of megan fox's tattoo, or haden paniterre's, but don't want to copy. Any ideas?

Does anyone have advice on goal setting? Does anyone have advice on goal setting?

Formula For Success, Chuck Gallozzi
There is not one path to success, but many. Choose one, stay on it, and you'll eventually reach your destination. How. ... Success is achieving YOUR goals, whatever they may be. My formula for success can be simply stated as Resolve + Knowledge + Plan + Action + Diligence + Endurance + Prudence = Success. Now, let's look at each of the seven steps.
1. Resolve
The moment we begin to achieve our goal is the moment we make up our mind to do so. Commitment and a resolute mind is like a woman in labor, they will give birth to our dream as long as we follow through with the other six steps. So, begin by making a wholehearted decision.
2. Knowledge
Once we are committed to a goal, we need knowledge to help us reach it. Many people try to go into business for themselves without this step. They think all they have to do is rent retail space, open a store, put a few signs in the window, and they'll be in business. They give little or no thought to marketing research. Who and where are their competitors? Who and where are their customers? How much are their customers willing to spend? What are their expectations? What are all the expenses of doing business and what level of sales is necessary to survive? Without a thorough investigation, is it any wonder that so many businesses fail?
Some confuse information with knowledge. Knowledge is based on facts.
Information is merely something that someone says. So, to succeed, you also need knowledge of the world. You have to understand that nothing in life is free. In other words, you need some common sense. You will also need the willingness to dig deeply enough to uncover all the facts.
3. Plan
Perhaps you've decided to become an airplane pilot. You've found out where to go, how much it costs, how to enroll, how long it takes to become qualified, what the health requirements are, and when the next sessions start. Now that you have some knowledge to work with, you make a plan. The plan is your road map to success. It shows where you are now and where you want to be. It lists all the steps, and intermediate steps, you must take to achieve your goal. After indicating the starting and completion dates of each step, you will be ready to begin.
4. Action
A map is of no value if you just stand there looking at it. Unless you start your journey, you'll never reach your destination. You've picked a destination, put fuel in your vehicle, and brought your map; it is now time to turn on the ignition. That is, it is time to act. Time to begin. There is magic in action, for whenever you do what you can, you immediately can do more. Each step brings you closer to your goal. That's the secret of reaching it, simply do something each day to bring you closer to its fruition.
5. Diligence
Doing something is not enough. Doing everything as best as we can is what is needed. Just taking action is insufficient; diligent and focused action is what it takes to succeed. As long as you are willing to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes, no one will be able to prevent you from reaching your goal.
Do not underestimate your power. You are not weak. ...
6. Perseverance
As we chase our dream, we will run into obstacles. That's the nature of life. Life is a bumpy road. So, put on your helmet and prepare for the worse, but continue. Perseverance prevails. Endurance is the power that will take you anywhere you wish to go. ...The power of endurance cannot be overstated. After all, you can't fail unless you quit before succeeding. So, just remember that patience is a prerequisite for success, for the only thing you can get without it is impatient.
Endurance implies faith. You may not know how you will overcome a particular problem, but you know you will. Doubt, or lack of faith, crushes one's potential success. For as the third century Indian philosopher Dandemis taught, ""If you believe a thing impossible, your despondency will make it so; but if you persevere, you will overcome every difficulty."
The roadblocks we face are not the problem. It is the inability to persevere despite them that is the problem. ...
7. Prudence
Perseverance or endurance does not mean to proceed blindly, without concern for the consequences. Prudence dictates that we maintain a balanced attitude and a measured response to a changing environment. To remain steadfast at all costs may be more a sign of stubbornness than one of perseverance. Yes, we want to remain on the road, but we must recognize that some roads are dead-ends. Sometimes, the only way to go forward is to retreat and try another route....

what should i study in university? i am in grade eleven and it is time to start making some decisions. i want a job were i get to travel, allot. meet new people and socialize. i was thinking studying media, public relations or marketing. i want an exciting job, i also love english. any suggestions on what to take in university and where i should go? i live in toronto and want to get as far away as i can maybe nyc or europe? the more exciting the better any suggestions would help thanks !

Admin 08.09.2011. 20:45

You are smart to start putting your road map to success in motion. The most important stage right now is to finish high school with the best grades you can achieve. Your grades are now the most important part of your life, they will determine not only what colleges will accept you but also set your pay scale for life.
Take this very seriously, do not let relationships or parties interfere with you life goals. Others around you may be jealous of your drive and ambition and will try to sabotage your dream. Stay focused and keep your education your first priority and it will lead you to all the opportunity and dreams you desire.
Go to your local TV station and talk with staff there, they will open their arms to answer your questions, maybe have you watch a broadcast, and give you positive guidance.
I am proud you are starting now to decide what you want to do, just remember the better your grades are, the higher pay scale you will earn. The more money you make will allow you to travel where ever and as often as you desire. If it turns out your occupation sends you around the world then you will get paid to do what you love to do and all your dreams of travel are for free. Then the second most important advice is to save your money. Now matter how big or small put 10% away in a interest bearing account and NEVER touch it. If you do this you will be a millionaire and never have to worry about later finances.
You be strong and go get em, let nothing deter you.
Take care.

thanks life is a name of struggle...

Admin 25.08.2011. 14:44

Instead of viewing to struggle in life,we can also ponder and prosper this way.
Understand yourself and augment your resources-channelise your energy and set reasonable goals/time frame for yourself.

Struggles are nothing but shackles around you, break the shackles and that requires continued inspiration with some amount of perspiration.

Believe in yourself--have a Road Map ,pragmatically, of direction/destinnation on your future.

Life is one hell of a competition, first we shall survive and paddle for success--life can not be always tidy, success depends upon how we use tide to our advantage.

What have been Indonesia's past positions/statements on United Nations? Array

blood fart

Admin 05.01.2010. 17:40

On September 28, 1950 Indonesia was admitted as the 60th Member State of the United Nations. The vote for admission, which was unanimous, took place five years after Indonesia?s Proclamation of Independence in 1945, the same year that the United Nations was established. Over the length of those five years the United Nations consistently supported Indonesia?s cause to become a free, independent and self-governing country. Given that support, many hailed Indonesia as truly a child of the United Nations.

Likewise Indonesia?s support for the purposes and principles of the United Nations was also firm. On its admission to the Organization, the Indonesian Ambassador, Lambertus N. Palar addressed the General Assembly and thanked his country?s staunch friends for championing his country?s cause. He pledged that Indonesia would assume all the obligations and responsibilities entailed in that membership. He also committed his Government to the goal of realizing the ideals of the United Nations as embodied in the Charter.

This resolve was manifested in Indonesia?s active participation in the major issues of the time including, among others, the struggles against colonialism, apartheid and the eradication of the dehumanizing scourge of poverty. The pursuit of these goals and principles also largely echoed Indonesia?s foreign policy which was enunciated by Vice President, Mohommed Hatta at a session of the Central National Commission on September 2nd 1948. The core of these policies represented an independent and active position or, in the word?s of the Vice President, ?Mendayung di antara Dua Karang?, translated as rowing between two reefs,

In carrying out its commitments to the United Nations over the past half century, Indonesia has adhered to its active and independent foreign policy and has greatly contributed towards bringing those goals and objectives to fruition. In doing so, Indonesia took a leading role in initiating and launching of the Bandung Conference of Asian-African States. At that time, Indonesia?s Prime Minister, Ali Sastroamidjojo, successfully persuaded the Asian States to broaden their perspective to include Africa in a wider group of developing country solidarity. The Bandung Conference, which became a precursor of the Non-Aligned Movement, set an independent course and put such issues as peaceful co-existence, and anti-colonialism on the global agenda and gave a new voice to over half the world?s people emerging from colonialism.

The success of the Conference was subsequently reflected in two General Assembly resolutions on peaceful co-existence and decolonization which reflected much of the wording forged at the Conference. Over the following years, Indonesia focused its attention on a number of core issues such as the struggle for economic and social development, the creation of more just and equitable world, the North-South Dialogue, Peace and Security, the Law of the Sea and sustainable development.

Indonesia served as a member of the Security Council for the first time between 1975 ? 1976. It became President of the Non-Aligned movement in 1992 and hosted the Tenth Conference of the Heads of State or Government in Jakarta in September that year. It again took on the role of elected Non-Permanent member of the Security Council during 1995 and 1996. In addition, Indonesia became Chairman of the Group of 77 in 1998; president of the ECOSOC in the Millennium year; Chairman of the Ministerial Prep-Com in Bali in the lead-up to the WSSD in Johannesburg in August 2002.

More recently, Indonesia chaired the process that led to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali in December 2007, at which the Bali Road Map was agreed. Between 2007 and 2008, Indonesia was a member of the Security Council, for the third time, and served as its president in November 2007. Since February 2008, it has been the Chair of the Committee on Decolonization. Indonesia is currently a member of the Troika Leaders on Climate Change. The Troika Leaders and the UN Secretary-General keep countries at the highest levels of government apprised of progress of the climate change negotiation process.

what are the pros and cons of being goal oriented? please tell me what do you think about being goal oriented.
provide pros and cons please.

Nate H

Admin 07.06.2007. 02:59

Pros -
You assess what it is you want and make a plan how to obtain your goals. This provides you with a road map for achievement which makes success much more likely. You are also less likely to let circumstances that get in your way to deter you from achieving your goal if you have your mind set on being successful. Most people aren't successful because things are easy for them -- but, moveover, because they knew what they wanted and weren't going to let barriers get in the way.

Sometimes people don't see the opportunities that may be in front of them because they are so fixed on achieving their "goal." There's something to be said for re-assessing your path and adjusting your goals if your circumstances or desires change.

What is your new year's 2010 resolution? 1. I have taken a pledge to give one glass of water at least 10 trees a day during my morning walk
2. I dream for at least 1 billion people do the same
3. Do join my pledge to save the earth

asim boral

Admin 25.12.2009. 12:40

My new year 2010 resolution are -- to complete all past resolution ....because....

Do you realize that approximately 80-92% of all new years resolutions fail? There are several reasons why the failure rate is so high for new years resolutions:

1) Emotional Feelings Control You

People as you know are emotional human beings, and because of such, everyone's emotions can and will change. You may have a goal for yourself for a new career, to lose weight, to be more fit, to quit smoking, to finish your college education, or to start your own home business.

As good as your intentions are, many including yourself, succumb and give in to your emotional state of being because you change your mind, and no longer think you will be able to achieve your goals for various reasons including failure.

2) Not Having SMART Goals

It is very easy to say you want to lose weight for 2010 and write it on a stickey note-pad and paste to your refrigerator door, but what is the liklihood that you will indeed lose weight-probably NIL to nothing. Your goals need to be SMART: (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timley). Otherwise, your goals are too vague and general for you to have any realistic chance of success.

3) Giving Up and Quitting too Soon

Most goals take time, if you're on a new diet plan, you need to give yourself adequate time in order to measure your progress. Don't give up and quit after two weeks stating it doesn't work. Maybe it will work but you've got to invest the time and effort for any chance of success.

4) Listening to Others

Advise and encouragement is a good thing. Everyone including yourself is motivated and encouraged when others positively comment and notice your goals and progress you are making. However just as people can be encouragers, the same holds true for those who believe you won't achieve your goals for various reasons.

You need to be strong enough not to give in to the nay-sayers in your life. Don't let someone's negativity influence you by deraling you and your goals in life.

5) Not having a Plan

Just as you would not set off for a trip across the US without an up to date and reliable road-map-why would you not develop a goal setting road map for your life? Failing to Plan means you Plan to Fail end of story. You must develop a goal etting action plan for your life broken down into managable/dable short and long term SMART goals.

6) Not acting upon your Goal plan

Ok you've got your SMART goal blue print in front of you with specific and measurable goals that are attainable and with a definate time-line, now the only thing preventing you from carrying out your plan is you. You are both your greatest friend and foe. The question is, which one do you allow to control your life? In the game of life there are regular everyday doers and achievers. When you look in the mirror everyday-which one do you see?

7) Lacking Faith and Belief in God and yourself

With any New Years resolution or goal, just writing down your goal does not necessarily guarantee that you will accomplish your goal objective. There are many factors that come into play including positive thinking and your attitude. However you must also possess the element of faith and belief in God or in yourself to achieve what you set out to accomplish.

As a Christian believer, I firmly believe in the power of faith and belief in my own personal and professional life. My goal in this blog is not to convince you into believing and accepting my faith-that is the Lord's work to convince you-not me. I am but the messenger and God the message. If you believe it you can achieve it-conversely-if you don't believe it will happen, more than likely you won't accomplish anything.

Remember: "The only Unfulfilled Goals in Your Life are the Ones you Never Attempt" So in this new year I WANT TO ATTEMPT MY ALL PAST RESOLUTION TO COMPLETE IT... at last one more added to this year .. one glass of water to 10 plants everyday .........SAVE THE EARTH FOR OUR NEXT Generation....

Andrew Bromley Harper

Writing a novel is never exactly easy. No matter how you approach it, a great deal of time and commitment is required. Nevertheless, seeing a book through to completion need not be a grueling, laborious task. If you approach the process with a thought-out plan it, it can actually be enjoyable.
When I began writing my first book a decade ago, I was overwhelmed. There was so much involved, and I didn?t know where to begin. Then I ran across an old adage: ?How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.?
This principle applies to any mammoth task, including writing a novel. With this in mind, I developed a five step process that makes the task of writing a book far more manageable.

1. Summarize Your Idea

Although this is the shortest step, it is also the most crucial. You take the idea which inspires you, and summarize it in 1-2 sentences. If you can?t encapsulate your book?s main concept in two sentences or less, that?s a good indication that your story lacks focus.
Example: An inexperienced Hobbit inherits a magic ring, and must journey to a far away land to destroy it.
Having a specific, defined focus for your book is vital to its success. If you try to do too much in your story, you may create a rambling mess which will alienate readers. Knowing what your novel is about, and being able to express it succinctly, is also crucial when seeking publication.

2. Write a Synopsis

Now that you?ve clarified what your book is about, it?s time to expand your story and its characters.
A good synopsis will cover the main elements of your plot, beat by beat, and will offer insights into your characters and their motivations.
The synopsis should not be long, as at this early stage you are only painting your story in broad strokes. Usually a 3-5 page synopsis will suffice, depending on the complexity of your novel.

3. Outline Your Story

There are differing opinions concerning outlining. Some authors, such as Stephen King, believe that outlining stifles the creative process. Others, such as Terry Brooks, argue that outlining is a valuable step when writing a book.
In my personal experience, outlining is essential. It empowers you to write your manuscript quickly, without the looming specter of writer?s block. If you have worked out the structure of your story in advance, your creative imagination is freed up to focus on other aspects of your book.

4. Write With Abandon

Now that your story has been charted out, it?s time to write. This is by far the longest step in the process. But if you come to it prepared, you should have a finished manuscript within a few months.
Using your outline as a road map, write out your novel scene by scene. Set a weekly goal for yourself, and keep it realistic. For working people and parents, producing fifteen to twenty double-spaced pages a week is a reasonable expectation.

The secret to completing this step is as follows:

Do not edit as you go. Simply write, and write fast.
If you produce a lackluster scene or chapter, that?s fine. Just let it be, and keep pressing forward. You should expect your first draft to suck. As the great Ernest Hemingway once said: ?The first draft of anything is shit.?
If you try to edit as you write, you will drive yourself mad. You must silence your inner critic, and keep pressing forward to the end.
When your manuscript is finished, put it somewhere out of reach and don?t think about it. Just let it sit, out of thought and mind, for two weeks to a month.

5. Revise Your Manuscript

Once enough time has elapsed, you can return to your manuscript with a fresh perspective. You?ll likely find it to be better than you remember.
An author once told me that great books are not written, but revised. It?s in this step that your true artistic talent will come to the forefront.
Take the raw material of your first draft, and reshape it into something exceptional. Don?t be afraid to let yourself experiment. If you allow your creative energies to take control, you can transform your awkward first draft into an engaging, well-paced novel.
For me, this step is the most rewarding. Nothing is more satisfying than taking an imperfect, rough manuscript, and polishing it into a thing of beauty.

Growing Together

Writing a book can appear to be a mammoth, tedious undertaking. But when the process is broken into manageable pieces, it can become a fun adventure.
When you encounter challenges along the way, feel free share them in our Writing Forums. By learning and growing with other writers, this journey can become even more rewarding.

What are some steps to becoming more confident? Help?!? Array

Admin 14.06.2010. 02:47

1. Identify core values
The first step in becoming confident is realizing your core values. Doing so will manifest a congruent identity that is aligned with how you live your life. And a man who knows exactly what he wants from himself and others is a confident man. The quickest way to recognize what you value in life to ask yourself some specific questions. The trick is not think about an answer. Just take into account the first few thoughts that pop into your head. Your intuition often knows best. Here are 3 questions you can ask yourself that will hopefully shine some light on your core values.
"What is are the things in life that make me happy?"
"What are the things in life that I am best at?"
"If I was forced to live by one ethic alone, what would it be?"
Your answers to these questions should provide a road map to a confident belief system.
2. Set goals
Another good way to become confident is to set small goals that can be achieved during the day. Most people equate goals to feats that are near unachievable. It's good to set some long term goals but it's also good to set goals that you can achieve right now. The crazy thing is you can turn basically any remedial task and turn it into a goal. For example, on one occasion I set a goal to run 3 miles. I achieved my goal and took a split moment to celebrate. The same day I set a goal to say hello to three people I had never met. I achieved my goal and basked in glory briefly. Later in the day I set a goal to go grocery shopping. I achieved my goal and by this time, I was confident I could pretty much do anything. What I realized is that after you've completed consecutive goals, your mind will start to associate what you do with success. It begins to transmute into other facets of your life. So if you want a real easy way to gain to gain confidence, set mini goals and achieve them throughout the day.

3. Externalize Success and Accomplishments
Another way to become confident is to write down everything you know you are good at. It doesn't have to be anything unique or profound. It can be as simple as "I am a good driver!" If you take into account much of the daily things you do and have done, your mind will begin to realize how competent you actually are. If you want to take this one step farther, you can write down all of your accomplishments.

4. Affirmations
Another way to create confidence is to practice saying affirmations to yourself. Because the unconscious mind cannot distinguish between the real world and the mental realm, many of the affirmations will slip past your consciousness into a place where they become real beliefs even if you have never had any success in that particular area. Note: In creating affirmations, it is extremely important to always keep them positive. Your unconscious mind does not hear positives or negatives. It simply hears commands. So if you were to say to yourself "I'm not a loser!" your subconscious mind will still hear "I'm" and "loser." Here is a set of affirmations I've used in the past that helped me become more confident.

I am blessed
I am attractive
I can attract beautiful women
I am confident
I am in control of my life
I know what I want
I know how to get what I want
I am successful
I am loved by others
I love myself
I am capable of anything
I am interesting
I am intelligent
