How to Use Humor to Increase Sales

By: Roger C. Parker

Using cartoons can help brand your marketing and drive home important messages. Although surprisingly inexpensive to acquire, humor can be one of your most powerful marketing tools.

Humor puts your readers at ease. Readers appreciate a touch of humor in an otherwise overly serious world.

Humor operates on an emotional level, driving home your message in a far more memorable way than words alone. Humor makes sensitive topics more approachable while summarizing and reinforcing points that would otherwise be lost.

Different types of humor work best in different contexts. Many speakers begin with a joke to put the audience at ease, or a story about 'a funny thing that happened on the way to the meeting.'

But jokes and stories are less appropriate for written communications. Jokes can be misinterpreted and depend on delivery and timing for their effectiveness. Stories can take too long to tell.

Cartoons are perfect for print communications. Readers who typically check them out before reading the adjacent articles appreciate cartoons.

More important, cartoons communicate at a glance. A cartoon can attract your reader's attention and drive home an important point in a memorable way.

The editorial page of any newspaper shows how effective humor can be in simplifying complex subjects and driving home a point of view.

Humor also adds a visual dimension to your marketing, differentiating your message from your competitor's. Cartoons encourage readers to look at topics they might otherwise skip.

Where do you get cartoons? One of the best sources is the Cartoon Bank, Here, you can license reproduction rights to cartoons that originally appeared in the New Yorker Magazine.

You can select from tens of thousands of cartoons. You can search by topic or keyword. After choosing an appropriate cartoon, you can find out how much it will cost to license it, and then you can download it.

Licensing fees are surprisingly reasonable for most business applications. For example, you can license New Yorker cartoons for use in presentations for just $19.) 95! For other purposes, the cost depends on where you're going to use it and how many people will see it.

There are, of course, other sources of cartoons. If you see a cartoon you like in a newspaper or magazine, write the cartoonist in care of the publication and ask about availability and pricing. If there is a particular cartoonist whose style you like, contact the cartoonist about a custom cartoon.

This has worked very well for me and I owned total rights to use the cartoon any way I wanted.

Cartoons are great for the home page of your website, newsletters, training materials and presentation visuals.

In each case, the unexpectedness of a cartoon immediately captures your audience or reader's attention and visually reinforces your message.

Here are some suggestions for marketing with cartoons:

1.) When in doubt, leave it out. If the cartoon does not perfectly support your point, leave it out.

2.) Always add the copyright information described in the licensing agreement.

3.) Never run a cartoon without first obtaining a license to reproduce it.

4.) Optimization. After downloading, resize and sharpen the cartoon in an image-editing program like Photoshop and export it in the proper file format.

Using humor in the form of cartoons is a powerful way to brand your marketing and drive home important messages to your prospects and clients.

Is it OK to use humor in a resume or cover letter? Im told most resumes are only glanced at for a few seconds and must catch a interviewers eye within that time. Is adding a little humor a good idea?

Admin 24.06.2007. 18:36

No - unless you're applying for a job a s a comedian! It's unprofessional and will not get you noticed (at least not in a positive way). Stick to the facts - your accomplishments, skills, and experiences. Make sure to highlight the impact or outcomes of your work ex. increased sales 10%.

What is the best way to advertise and Market an online tea shop? I would like to open an online tea shop focusing on fresh leaf teas. I have started a website as well as my business plan for an SBA loan. What is the most cost effective and economical way of marketing and advertising online? This would strictly be an online business.

Admin 30.05.2007. 02:23

promotional strategies, always remember that the traffic is not the whole solution.

You must also convert your visitors to buyers. Always watch for ways to work with "emotional content" since most people make their "buying decisions" when they are in an emotional state.

Your promotions need to make the visitor FEEL good. Consider at times where the use of humour might be incorporated or perhaps the warm fuzzy feelings produced by the tone of your writing. This is a secret that traditional advertisers have been using for years successfully.

Are you using the little credit card logos on your page above the fold where the visitors can see them easily without scrolling? These logos as well as the verisign logo or security logos all instill a sense of trust in your visitor.

Do everything you can to make your page "feel safe" and friendly to your visitors. Your site is finished and your online store is up and running, but your work is just beginning. Your next task is to optimize your site to maximize sales and focus on customer conversion.
Here are a few suggestions on converting click-throughs to purchases

Clean design and easy-to-understand navigation is key to a successful e-business site. Your customers need to be able to find your merchandise quickly and get around your site easily. If customers don't find what they are looking for quickly, they may leave your store before making a purchase.
Site Copy

Compelling copy can also help you optimize your sales. Spend some time fine-tuning your site?s content to make sure that it is appealing and helps sell your products. Good copy is informative, short, and to the point, listing all of the key details of your products in an easy-to-read format.

Once your copy is written, analyze it to make sure it is optimized for search engines. The best way to ensure you get your fair share of traffic from search engines is by placing appropriate keywords throughout your pages.

When search engines index sites, they go through pages looking for keywords and rank Web pages accordingly. If you have popular keywords throughout your copy, search engines will include your Web site in search results for those terms.
Special Offers

Now that the mechanics are out of the way, you can focus on increasing the appeal of your products by offering free gifts or running specials. The best way to entice a new customer to purchase from your company instead of your competition is by offering them something that they can't get anywhere else. Here are a few examples.

Sales. The old standby, the sale, works just as well online as offline. If your business is seasonal, offer a discount during a traditional slow period. Alternately, if you have too much inventory of a particular type, you can mark it down dramatically in an attempt to move it.

Free shipping. Instead of offering a discount on your products, you can discount your shipping for a limited time, or offer free shipping for purchases over a certain amount. Offering free shipping on orders over $100, for example, may encourage a customer to add to his or her order to get free shipping.

Coupons are a proven way to increase return customer sales, which can keep a business going for a long time. If you can keep your existing customers happy, they can provide a large percentage of your sales.

E-books or newsletters. Free information related to the products you sell can be a cost-effective way to keep customers coming back. For example, if you sell home furnishings in your store, you could offer a free e-book about interior design principles.

If you don't have time to write an e-book, you may be able to find existing copy to redistribute to your customers. Try researching topics for items that you sell and see if you can find anything that ties in well with your store.

Additionally, e-mail newsletters are an excellent way to keep in touch with your customers in a relatively unobtrusive manner. Newsletters can be used to communicate information about sales, featured items, and general news, as well as deliver targeted marketing.

Updating your site regularly is critical to keeping your customers coming back. Employing the techniques above will force you to keep your site fresh, as you rotate your offers throughout your business cycle. New content lets your customers know that your online business is thriving, and will let them know you are in it for the long haul.

Is your web site trustworthy?

It's very important that your web site visitors have trust and confidence in your company. Your customers must trust you. They won't buy from you if they don't.

On the World Wide Web, you cannot speak face to face with your customer so you have to establish credibility in other ways.

1. Make sure that your web pages have a professional design

Your web pages have to look perfect. If necessary, hire a professional web designer. Don't use blinking text, funny animations or flashy banners on your page. Make sure that all links on your web site are intact.

Don't use automatically created web pages. Some software programs allow you to automatically create pages that are "optimized" for a special keyword. These doorway pages don't work anymore on search engines (its simply spamming).

In addition, human web surfers are turned away by that kind of pages. While doorway pages might look attractive to software programs, web surfers usually hate them. Automatically created doorway pages usually look ugly to human web surfers. Often, they consist of nothing more than a list of buzz-words. You won't get good results with this method because human web surfers will quickly close such a web page.

2. Tell your web site visitors who you are

Make sure that customers know that a real person is sitting behind this Web page. Include your full contact information on your web site and make it easy to find.

If your visitors don't know from whom they will purchase and how to contact you, they won't buy anything. Show your privacy policy.

3. Offer free trials and show your refund policy

The most common things to establish trustworthiness is to offer a free trial and a money back guarantee. If your customers know what they'll get, they'll be more likely to purchase.

4. Use testimonials.

Its far better if other people say nice things about you than you saying nice things about yourself. Testimonials from satisfied customers will show how your business can do a better job than your competitor when it comes to customer satisfaction.

What scene is unimportant in the Scarlet Letter? What scene within the book is unimportant to the novel as a whole? I think the most important scene is where Dimmsdale confesses in the end, but can't find an unimportant scene that could have been left out...
do you have any opinions?

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

This meant nothing to me in regards to the book.

Unless you are specifically assigned otherwise, you should save "The Custom House" until after you have finished reading The Scarlet Letter.

Frankly, you will find the introduction rough going. It is long. It is plotless. It depends for its effect on a sense of humor that is far removed from modern comedy shows like Saturday Night Live. In addition, "The Custom House" is not really an integral part of the novel proper. It was added by Hawthorne as an afterthought on the advice of his publisher. The piece was supposed to add a light touch to an otherwise heavy work, and thereby increase sales. More.....

What exactly did ronald reagan do that makes republicans revere him so? please be as specific as you can? If you cannot answer this simple question without hurling insults, then what are we to make of your intellectual capacity?

Please try to answer the question with FACTS instead of responding with a question of your own.

Sorry, but there's so much spin here, I have to say something.

1) He did lift tariffs and began the round of free trade that destroyed our manufacturing. Not exactly a plus.

2) He was an ultimate new conservative and began the anti-intellectual conservative movement, culminating in the idiocy of George Bush. His idea was that quips, jokes, and a sense of humor won elections, not knowledge of politics and economics. Hence, his policies were simply lies and helped wreck the country, but people felt good about it.

3) His Supply Side tax cuts were such a failure he had to raise taxes every year after 1981, including the payroll tax. The Supply Side cuts went mainly to the wealthy, increased the deficit, and begain the income inequality that we see today.

4) Economic growth was 'high' under Reagan only because he began his term with the worst recession since the Great Depression. Unemployment soared up to 10%. In fact, the economy never recovered like in the past.

5) The idea that he somehow ended the cold war is absurd. Raising military spending by 100 billion and adding a few missiles into the European theater did nothing to tip the balance that both countries had in thousands of nuclear weapons, way more than either side needed to destroy themselves. It was Russia's economy which imploded do to the inefficiencies of communist economics. Gorbachev came before Reagan, and it was Bush senior who was president when the wall came down.

6) People blame Carter for the high interest rates and inflation, but Reagan kept Carter's central banker who engineered the high rates and the recession to wipe out inflation. Carter also began deregulation of oil, that the Republican, Nixon, put in place.

7) The idea that Reagan was strong and hence the hostages were released is also false. Later in his term he would negotiate to bring the hostages home, sell WMD to Saddam Hussien, and trade arms sales to Iran for money to give terrorists (freedom fighters) in Nicaragua (to evade US law). Reagan would end up supporting both Saddam Hussien and Bin Laden in Afganistan, probably the worst mistake a President made in the 20th century.

Why is Maya Angelou important, and influential? What did she do to become influential ?

Rachel. :D

Admin 01.02.2009. 23:39

When I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was published in 1969, Angelou was hailed as a new kind of memoirist, one of the first African American women who was able to publicly discuss her personal life. Up to that point, black female writers were marginalized to the point that they were unable to present themselves as central characters. Writer Julian Mayfield, who calls Caged Bird "a work of art that eludes description",[57] insists that Angelou's autobiographies set a precedent not only for other black women writers, but for the genre of autobiography as a whole.[57] Through the writing of her autobiography, Angelou had become recognized and highly respected as a spokesperson for blacks and women.[18] It made her "without a doubt, ... America's most visible black woman autobiographer".[3]

Author Hilton Als insists that although Caged Bird was an important contribution to the increase of black feminist writings in the 1970s, he attributes its success less to its originality than with "its resonance in the prevailing Zeitgeist",[57] or the time in which it was written, at the end of the American Civil Rights movement. Als also insists that Angelou's writings, more interested in self-revelation than in politics or feminism, freed many other female writers to "open themselves up without shame to the eyes of the world".[57] An Angelou biographer, Joanne M. Braxton, insists that Caged Bird was "perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing" autobiography written by an African-American woman in its era.[3]

The week after Angelou recited her poem, "On the Pulse of Morning", at President Bill Clinton's 1993 inauguration, sales of the paperback version of her books and poetry rose by 300-600%. Bantam Books had to reprint 400,000 copies of all her books to keep up with the demand. Random House, which published Angelou's hardcover books and published the poem later that year, reported that they sold more of her books in January 1993 than they did in all of 1992, accounting for a 12,000% increase.[58]

Angelou's autobiographies have been used in narrative and multicultural approaches in teacher education. Jocelyn A. Glazier, a professor at George Washington University, has used I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Gather Together in My Name to train teachers how to "talk about race" in their classrooms. Due to Angelou's use of understatement, self-mockery, humor, and irony, readers of Angelou's autobiographies wonder what she "left out" and are unsure about how to respond to the events Angelou describes. Angelou's depictions of her experiences of racism force white readers to explore their feelings about race and their own "privileged status". Glazier found that although critics have focused on where Angelou fits within the genre of African-American autobiography and on her literary techniques, readers react to her storytelling with "surprise, particularly when [they] enter the text with certain expectations about the genre of autobiography".[59]

Do i show potential employers at interviews that I have a sense of humour? Humour.

julie p

Admin 17.02.2007. 15:56

I sit-in on lots of interviews, and do a lot myself. I have met candidates of all backgrounds, and going for all sorts of positions, but I tend to find the "Funny" ones are the first ones booted out.

A lot of interviews are done Formally, so jokes off-set the mood. If the interviewer is going for formal interview style, your chances are dead.

Humour is a strange thing; Its funny, so to speak. Jokes that some may find funny, others don't. Some jokes are not understood by everyone. It is not a good idea to tell a joke to someone you have only just met, and therefore are not aware of how they would react to something.

Sometimes jokes can break the ice, and help you make an impact. Is the secret to great humour not Timing? Slip in an odd joke if the chance comes up, but don't force it. and make it unbiased, simple, and non-insulting.

One interview I went to, I was directed to the third door on the left. I knocked as I was going in, and the reply came as "Who's there". An instant moment to reply with a simple Knock-knock joke. Justin, I replied, Justin who; Justin to help you increase your sales figures.

About the ADBA

History of the ADBA

The American Dog Breeders Association, Inc. was started in September, l909 as an exclusive association of American Pit Bull Terrier breeders. The residing president, Mr. Guy McCord, was an avid fancier and breeder of the dogs, and was a close friend of Mr. John P. Colby. Mr. Colby was the mainstay of the A.D.B.A. which prompted the boast of being the "home" registration office of the Colby dogs. All members, in good standing, could register their dogs and litters with the registration department upon the yearly payment of $2.50 dues fee. It seems that the exclusive members idea gradually was replaced into an open registry to all owners and breeders of purebred American Pit Bull Terriers, to act as an exclusive registry of the breed and insure the accuracy of this type of records keeping.

The paper issued at that time, was a one page, pink paper which on the top listed the description of the dog and other pertinent information necessary to serve as a title of ownership on the dog. On the bottom, it listed the pedigree, owner and breeder. We thought it interesting to note that on the reverse side of this paper it read, in part: "The American Pit Bull Terrier is now recognized as a standard breed, where a few years ago, it was un-recognized as a breed. The majority of the American public carried the impression that the American Pit Bull Terrier was synonymous with dogs used for fighting purposes only. This idea has been dispelled by persistent efforts of the breeders who compose this association. Presently, classes for American Pit Bull Terriers can be found at almost every local dog show being held. With concerted effort, our faithful friend will in time be classed as the leading American dog, who will give his life if necessary in defense of his master/mistress. We trust that you will unite with us in our efforts to bring this dog to the destiny he deserves. "The Standard dog of the U.S.A."

The A.D.B.A. passed from the hands of Mr. McCord to Mr. Frank Ferris in l951. He, along with his wife Florence Colby, (the wife of the late John P. Colby) continued to run the A.D.B.A. on a limited scale, but with ever increasing emphasis on the registration of the A.P.B.T. breed exclusively. In 1973, through the recommendation of Howard Heinzl, Ralph Greenwood and his family purchased the A.D.B.A. from Mr. Ferris, whose advancing age prompted his retirement. (Mr. Heinzl was a personal friend of Frank Ferris and a staunch supporter of the A.D.B.A., as he registered his dogs exclusively with A.D.B.A.) We often wish Frank could have lived to witness the growth of the present association. He would have been pleased.

In 1976, the A.D.B.A. was petitioned by the owners of the breed, who possessed a very competitive spirit, to develop a standard on the breed by which conformation dog shows could be held. They did not want a standard that copied those of the UKC or AKC, but a standard for those dogs that they owned and continued to breed for the traits of intelligence, character, loyalty, and the athletic prowess that the breed was originally bred for hundreds of years ago. Thereby, they could continue competition, in a legal endeavor. Thus, the formation of the A.D.B.A. Conformation Standard.

The publication of the American Pit Bull Terrier Gazette started about this same time, and the first issue (Volume 1 - Issue 1) was out of the printers August, l976. Our aim: To enlighten the public to the truth about the A.P.B.T. and promote the positive aspects of the breed, through the conformation shows and the weight pulling events. The Gazette is the official publication of the A.D.B.A. and offers articles of history, pedigrees, ads on dogs for sale and at stud, books on the breed that are available, a bit of humor, dog care, nutrition, show and pulling training, as well as a sounding board for those associated with the breed. We try to bring the past as well as the present to life for our readers, portraying our dogs as they were then, and are now today.

Our association continues to grow in the U.S.A. and other countries overseas. The American Dog Breeders Association Inc. is the largest registration office of the American Pit Bull Terrier. The A.D.B.A. registered American Pit Bull Terrier is the #1 breed of dog exhibited in the U.S.A. today, through conformation dog shows and weight pulling events sponsored by the American Dog Breeders Show Inc.

What does the 2008 cls550 AMG package include? what features does the optional AMG Package include?

Admin 10.08.2011. 08:20

Mercedes Benz did not produced the "AMG" on the 2008 CLS 550 model. But, "MB Dealers" in an effort to increase sales, and offer-ability, were able to place orders of a wanna-be version of the "AMG." The car came with, AMG Bumpers, Ground Effects, Five Spoke Wheels, Interior Up-Grades, Steering Wheel With Shift Paddles, and that's where the package ended.

Dealers gave it a fancy name, they called it the "AMG Sports Package." The car did not have the "AMG-Performance-Drive-Train-Engine-Suspension-Exhaust System-ECU-Brakes-Steering-or Transmission", of a true "AMG", nor did it come displaying the "AMG Badge On The Truck Lid."

While it sported the looks of a true "AMG", it sure did not sport the "Price", of a true "AMG."

Take a few minutes, and visit the "Mercedes Benz AMG" web-site by, Clicking On The Link Below.

@ Bandit-05 ... Thank You, that's exactly what I said in my reply to this question, dealers were able to place orders for a wanna-be version of the AMG." A "AMG Sports Package", or "AMG Appearance Package", does not make a "True AMG."

Please try your best not to take my (sometimes twisted, often sarcastic) humor literally. Enjoy this beautiful day.

Good Luck !

.You may meet someone today that will boost your energies. This is not a new friend but rather a visitor and they seem to have a sense of humor with a good attitude. Laughter and friendships are at the top of the list this evening. Every few years there must be some changes in the type of social environment you enjoy. This could mean a move or a change of personalities with whom you communicate. Don?t be too surprised if you are offered a job in another location outside your city. If possible, give yourself time to think through your options. Try to keep your emotions in check for now. Remaining objective is the best course of action. This evening is a good time to be with your friends or loved ones. If you are single, you may attract a new love.

Libra Personality Traits

Librans do not like to hurt anyone and will work as hard as they can in a diplomatic way to keep this from happening. Because of this they can be seen as indecisive. And sometimes they are. This is one of their worst traits.

Librans find their best work at anything creative and they don?t lack physical or emotional energy. They generally appear to be relaxed when in fact, they are constantly thinking about their next project and ready to get to it.

These wonderful people loathe loneliness and are happiest when they have a companion to share in all they do. They need romantic relationships and want to give whatever the love of their life wants. Although they are peace-loving people, Librans have been known to start arguments with their partners just to be able to figure out whether they are really loved or not. Extremely generous to the extremes, Librans need to be aware why they love to give.

They are charming and most often very beautiful people who are used to people noticing them. Librans value fairness above all else. And they expect others to feel the same way.

If they have a fault or two, it could be that they give in to others too easily. They do this even when they know that they are right just to prevent upset. And another small fault may be that they sometimes develop a tendency towards procrastination especially when they have to make a decision about a loved one.

Libra Description

Libra (Tula)
Sign No. 7
English Name lIBRA
Sanskrit Name Tula
Meaning of Sanskrit Name The Scales
Type Air
Lord Venus

Veethyam tulapanyadharo manushyah sthitah sanabhikatibastideshe

[A man placing goods for sale on a balance, which is the picture of Tula ( Libra ) rashi. It represents the lower abdomen of the Kaal Purusha (Ursha major) and lives among the places of merchandising, and lands yielding good vegetables.]

The seventh Sign of the Rashichakra, Libra is the charmer one. From this point in Rashichakra, a shift is also noticeable when the last six signs focus on the individual's contact with the world. The previous six concentrate on themselves.

Jatakas of Tula ( Libra ) rashi, are the first to socialize, since by order they hate to stay alone. Their foremost focus is on others and how they relate to them. The motto of Tulajataks ( people born under libra ): a pair will do it much better than an individual effort. When paired they fare better, since they epitomize balance, harmony and a sense of fair play. While its true for their work, Tulajataks ( people born under libra ) pair up more favourably for a home: marriage. They are complete when they are in love, forever.

Tula ( Libra ) is symbolised by the scales and, just as that balancing act, the Jatakas of this sign too want to remain on an even keel. They are objective, just, and want to do what is best for everyone. This penchant for fairness often stems on a personal need - to avoid conflict and confrontation. In the hope of achieving peace and harmony they may even be labelled as fickle and indecisive. Tulajatakas ( people born under libra ) are keen strategists, organizers of groups with poise and get things done. At the same time are also companionable and sociable people.

Diplomatic, Tulajatakas ( people born under libra ) hate uncouth behaviour. Always balanced, most pleasant and beautiful, they possess natural charm in abundance and an easygoing manner that makes things they desire, quite easily accessible to them. Compassionate, generous and diplomatic, they find many who offer favours to them. Tulajatakas ( people born under libra ) return favours too and can be equally helpful. Often accused of being lazy, it is only because the scales work overtime and need to recuperate. However indecisiveness is the scales' biggest drawback, which often leads to delays, as they keep weighing the pros and cons. They are most apt to postpone difficult decisions for as long as possible than face unsavoury situations. The scales will be frequently called upon to settle disputes, something they do with a keen sense of justice.

While in dispute Tulajatakas ( people born under libra ) can provide heroic, gung-ho display in defending what they judge as right. They wait till all agree, and no sooner they do, the Tulajataka ( people born under libra ) crosses over to the enemy camp and becomes the devil's advocate (since they weren't faring too well in the fight and the scales were tipped!). When balanced the scales are angelic, but when tipped, the Tulajataka ( people born under libra ) can be quarrelsome, restless, superficial, vain, confused, or even depressed. Then just as mysteriously as it happens, it levels and once more the sun shines and birds are chirping melodiously. They admire physical beauty. Librans' easy-going nature, their charm, the keen sense of humour, tact and repertoire wins new friends and keep the admirers happy. Tulajatakas ( people born under libra ) are big collectors and spenders since they like to live in beautiful surroundings and are fairly obsessed with keeping a clean house and in order to acquire these material knick-knacks, they will even flirt. But none can ever spot an impulsive and rash Tulajataka ( people born under libra ), since they are meticulous in all they do. However sometimes theyalso invite trouble in the need to be popular, saying what they think one might just want to hear, true or otherwise, just so to ensure their popularity with one. But at the same time, the impersonal and impartial Tulajataka ( people born under libra ) will give out only what is demanded, never overdo.

Tulajatakas ( people born under libra ) try to keep everybody happy, sometimes because they simply cannot make up their minds as every argument looks solid to them.
