Starting An Online Business Can Be Fun And Profitable

Comments (20)

Starting an online business can be fun, profitable and a very rewarding experience. Many people dream of having a home based business and the freedom that comes with a successful venture. There are many online business opportunities to choose from. Just go to any search engine and type in "home business opportunities" and you will literally have thousands of opportunities. So how do we decide which one is right for you? The right opportunity depends on several factors. Two key factors are how much time you can devote to your new business venture and how much your budget can afford.

The best online business opportunities should be free to join, have multiple affiliate programs to choose from, and offer free website design and setup. This type of opportunity is totally free and provides residual income streams. Your only monetary requirement is to pay for website hosting, an autoresponder service, and advertising your new website. Your website hosting and autoresponder service can vary significantly, so check pricing before committing, and your advertising budget is totally up to you. If your advertising budget is tight, there are several free forms of advertising available. Take things slow and don't get discouraged. It takes time to build a business.

Your new online business should first begin as a "sole proprietorship", which means that you are the sole owner of the business. Your social security number will be your tax identification number, so you don't need to apply for a federal identification number. You don't even have to report to the government that you are in business until you file your tax return (schedule C).

Remember that every expense for your business is tax deductible. Your new business can generate thousands of dollars in deductible expenses every year whether your business is profitable or not. Keep receipts and a record of your income and expenses. This can be easily accomplished with any spreadsheet software and is probably already on your computer.

Once your website is up and running and your autoresponder is ready to send prewritten articles to all your potential customers, your next step is to begin your advertising campaign. You have several advertising options to choose from. If you desire to get off to a quick start then you will have to pay for advertising. This can be in the form of purchasing leads from a reputable lead generating company, buying key word phrases from places like Google or Overture, ad placement on various websites, and traffic generating sites. Success in your new online business venture depends on your marketing effort. Online business success is 90% marketing and only 10% dependent on the products or services you offer. The key to your success is marketing!

One of the best advertising options for tight budgets is free traffic generating sites. Go to any search engine and type in "free web traffic" and visit several of the listings. The best sites will enable you to generate free traffic at no cost. These "free sites" allow you to surf for credits. These credits are then used to promote your website. Another free option is linking your website to another website. This is called reciprocal linking and can generate a steady flow of potential customers to your website.

I am looking for a legitimate online business? I am a stay at home mom and I have been searching for an online business that is legitimate. I have looked at many and sad to say most of them are scams. I have to be home with my kids right now because some of them are young and not in school. However, I need something to do for myself not just financially, but a little sanity. I've been home for almost 10 years I'm going a little bananas.

Hello Ma'am I admire what you do, that is a job in itself. My name is Joey Quiles, I own Infinite Horizons World Travel and I have the perfect answer for you... the Travel Industry!! It is very profitable, you can do it on a part-time basis, you can do it from home, it's a lot of fun and the company is very reputable. The company is called YTB, it was started by a pastor of 40 years, it's publicly traded on the NYSE and the American Exchange and it grew 300% last year alone. The benefits are incredible and the compensation plan is copy written therefore one-of-a-kind. So I encourage you to do some research on YTB and you will be pleasantly surprised and shocked (I know I was). Feel free to e-mail me at joey_quiles@yahoo.com and we'll talk more about it. I promise you this can change your life, but... only if you let it. Take care and I will talk to you soon.

What is the best way to start a bbq business? I would like to start a bbq business. Should I start off with a mobile bbq business or should I start off with a small building? What are the start up cost?

Hello,

We started our San Diego-based BBQ company http://www.smokehousegrills.com about 2 years ago and have had tremendous success with an online-only model. We specialize in on-site cooking, but business volume has increased so much (especially during the summer months) that we now have a building that we work out of, even though a lot of our cooking is still done at the job site. We have owned store-front restaurants before (other businesses), but being strictly catering is much, much more profitable and fun.

For you I would recommend to start off with a mobile operation - you won't be able to do very large parties initially, but that will come in time. As for the startup costs, they were relatively low - we had 2 or 3 Traeger electric pellet smokers (http://www.traegergrills.com/) that ranged between $600 and $1200 each, a few pop-up tents around $100 each, 5 or 6 tables, chafing dishes, portable burners, and a large white trailer which I think was around $4000 (largest expense to date). We already had the pickup to tow the trailer. In total, I think we initially spent somewhere around $10,000.

Initially we would only book 1 job per day, as we did not have enough equipment to support any more, but less than 2 years later, we are averaging 6 or 7 jobs per Saturday with a high of 9 jobs last week - it was awesome!

Finally, I strongly recommend investigating Google's sponsored links system - we owe most of our referrals to it and while expensive, the results are undeniable. Good luck with whatever you do!

How much money do you need to make to qualify as a small business? I want to start selling more artwork online, but I've temporarily put it on hold as I can't find anywhere how much I need to make before it's considered a small business. I live in Alabama, btw.

There is no hard and fast dollar amount that you need to earn to qualify as a small business....

If you are selling artwork online or offline with the goal of earning a profit - then you are in business.

If on the other hand you sale artwork simply for fun and never earn a profit - then your activity would most likely be viewed as a hobby. (You can earn money from a hobby but if you earn more than your costs - this is considered taxable business income)

The rules are a little tricky - but I would say if you are wanting to start a business - and based upon your plan you feel it will be profitable - you are in business - Congrats.

What is the best type of online store to make? This really isn't a -work at home- question, but my husband teaches preschool and he gets checks in the summer but he gets pretty bored and would like some extra income. We are considering making an Online store/selling things on Ebay for more of a hobby/extra cash.

Anyone have any ideas on what's fun and not hurting your bank account to start doing/selling? Any candle-selling companies, make-up, anything else out there that is enjoyable, yet profitable?

I make jewellery out of bits and bobs, bottle caps, buttons, mobile phone charms, plectrums, and sometimes I modify clothing with stamps and stencils, or modify mens clothing, like heavy metal T-Shirts into cute girls tops. I've not got any up at the moment, but take a look at what's there, it's arty and fun, slightly girly for your husband though.
But definately be creative, otherwise its just a tedious business.

I want to start my own auto detail business out of my home. What to think about to start? One of my favorite things to do is to clean my truck from top to bottom. This hobby is very rewarding when I see how beautiful my truck is when it is clean. I'd like to think this would be a great business adventure because I like it so much and don't see it as being "work". Plus, if I can make a money this would be an added bonus. Any thoughts or advice would help. As of now, I have my husbands shop he will let me work out of. There aren't many detail shops around here where I live, therefore, I think it would be a very profitable adventure.

First off, be careful turning what you love into what you make money with. Turning it into a job could possibly kill your enthuisiasm. Sometimes its just nice to do things for fun or to give yourself a way to vent.

Second, start with your local licensing office. They should have exactly what you need - a checklist for everything they require to make it legal. (You don't want to get busted by the IRS or likewise.)

Third, from there start pounding pavement. Go to VistaPrint and get free or cheap business cards, put them on car windows, in helth food stores, etc. Call mechanics and ask if you can put some there, call businesses and ask if you can setup a time/date and offer there employees a discount, etc. Get creative. With an independent one man business, advertising doesn't have to cost much.

You might also try to find a mentor online who can help you out. Do some Google searches.

Oh and remember, 80% of running a small business is common sense and organizational skills. As long as your not a sloppy flake, you'll do fine!

And good luck!

What is the simplest and most profitable job to do at home? I'm a stay at home mom and only about to be 19 so I was looking for a simple job to do from my home. Ive heard of people doing Avon and other make up products, but I wasn't sure how reliable they were. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hi,

I think many of the answers here are putting you on the right track. Network Marketing is a great way to make a good income, while working it into your life, rather than your life around your work.

When reviewing companies to start your business with, I hope you will also take a look at Arbonne. Look at a few companies, they are all a little different and you want to be sure to pick the one that fits you best.

With all companies you will need to sell, but some more than others. My Arbonne team all work together and we have a lot of fun. We don't really do home parties or brochure sales. We just work our business in the nooks and crannies of our day, building a network of shoppers. I buy from my own online store and I teach others to buy from their own online store. $29.00 dollars to start and no keeping inventory or delivery to clients.

Please email me me though my profile here you would like a little more information and then you can pick the company best for you.

I wish you the best and keep on this track. Network marketing is a great career to go after.

Live Happy,
Karen

Hey, you should seriously check out Treasure Trooper. It's a great survey site that offers a variety of ways to make money from the convince of your desk! I've made $81.20 my first payout, without even trying. My strategy is to just take a survey and a cash click a day. That way you can make $60 a month at the least. Treasure Trooper isn't a scam either. I know this because I've received money.
Treasure Trooper is fun, easy, and profitable. MSKASSIDEE :)

I want to start a "green" home business. Any suggestions or companies I can try?? I am looking for a home business that is profitable, fun, with lots of support that only features "green" products and living. It needs to be something I can do online. I am a stay at home mom of 2 very young children so it has to be something that I can do in the least time possible. thank you.

I am a stay at home mom as well. I came across this product recently and have had nothing but positve feedback. I am an independent business owner of Xziex. Xziex is a brand new company about to launch a mass marketing of atmospheric water generators. These machines pull the water out of the air, purfiy it and put it on tap for drinking. All you must do is plug it in. I live in a GA and it is very humid I can get about a gallon every two hours. You can start up for under a hundred dollars and I can help you with your website. You should check out mine at www.invisiblewaternow.com. I would love to talk to you about it. I cant think of a better way to help myself, my family and Mother Earth. It takes relatively little time and I do it while my daughter is napping or playing. I am so excited about this and the money that is to come when the general public finds out they can make their own water. I have done all my promoting online and some free eco-advertising at the park (writing mywebsite in sidewalk chalk on really visible paths) lol I dont want to waste paper and ink if someone is jsut going to tear it down and toss. This is the best oportunity i have seen you should look into it . I would be happy to help. Sincerely, Carrie Lewis

Hi!
You haven't mentioned much about your experience or how much money etc you have to go with, so it's a tough question!

If you have a lot of start-up capital, and are not necessarily an idea person, then maybe getting hooked up with someone with a genius idea maybe a goer - that's how MySpace came about. One guy with the idea, and one guy with the money (and look how that turned out!).
Alternatively there are option like franchises and license agreements - I would definitely warn you to be careful with things like this, as often with franchises for instance they take a percentage of your profits from your gross earnings (which means that even if your running costs increase, they still get a large chunk of your pie). License agreements can also be hazardous, as I'm in the situation of dealing with at the moment, where you have to abide by their rules, but they don't help you a lot which can be restrictive.
With retail, you need to be aware of the things that come with it! You end up with a lot of stock, a lot of staff, and a lot of paperwork and government regulation stuff that can drown you before you get going.
Hospitality is often a fun business, but can be hazardous leaving staff in charge of things while you aren't there. Having staff is kind of like running a kindergarten, and the saying "good help is hard to find" is sooo true!
Of course if you are short on start-up capital or just don't want to spend a million dollars, then there are lots of options out there.
Selling things online from home can be profitable (no rent or a premises and no staff), but can be time consuming. There are also a lot of websites online that claim to earn you money online although I would do some serious due diligence to see if they suit your needs long term.

You want a business where you don't have to work 90 hrs a week because if you were going to do that then you might as well get a JOB, and when you've said you want to own a successful business it sort of depends whether you are looking to earn $50k per year or $500k per year.
I've been involved in a licensed business (similar to a franchise) for about 2 and a half years now, and honestly I'm probably not much better off financially than I was back when I started and I'm trying to sell now because my other business makes me 10x the money for about half the effort... and I don't have to go to work everyday. I also love the fact my second business cost me a fraction of my licensed one (which was around $200k), and provides me with RESIDUAL income.
Residual income is something I am totally passionate about. If you or someone you love gets sick or dies, or if you need a holiday or break for any reason, you should be able to walk away from your business and still have it pay you without having to worry about finances. If the business you choose doesn't see you eventually earning without doing work, you're in the wrong business.
There are a lot of different types of businesses out there - it comes down to what fits your needs and gets you where you want to be.
If you have a couple of mins free send me an email, and I can send you a link with a 40min online video with some information that may interest (or at the very least teach you something new you may not have already known) you, or if you are interested in a franchise or license I may also be useful if you have further questions.
Good Luck, Pam pamhartleylaw@gmail.com
