Solution-Sell is a Myth!

By: Paul Shearstone

Who among us is not already up to here with the omni-smarts who wax poetic the benefits of "Solution Selling." Now it may seem strange for me, the author of the book "Up Your Income! Solution Selling for Profitability" to cast aspersions on the merits of this approach. Nevertheless like so many things in the real world, theory is one thing, application thereof is quite another.

The question then becomes; what are the differences between theory and reality for the Solution Sell, and, is there credibility in either?

It's well known the solution selling strategy was designed to meet the challenges of the 1980s new Technological Era. The computer not only changed the way we did business, it also changed the philosophy by which we sell. The fact that few industries were untouched by the computer meant there was fertile ground for this new selling style to quickly take root.

The solution sell dealt with the 'Multi-Box' challenge ostensibly needed to address more complex products and solutions in a more competitive marketplace involving more players than ever providing exactly the same or similar merchandise.

This new approach took a longer view of the selling process and was expressly designed to garner long-term customer loyalty. If companies were to survive and remain profitable, customers had to buy into the idea there was added value in long-term relationships that refocused purchasing criteria on Value and not strictly on Price.

The strategy certainly made sense then and still does today. So one might then ask, Where's the problem?

Like so many companies hoodwinked into believing the way to success was through a good corporate 'Mission Statement', the solution sell approach - much like a mission statement - was and still is, a simple strategy. It is only in its successful application that success of any kind can be realized.

Looking at it differently, the way to win a hockey game is to put the puck in the net more times than your opponent and keep doing it until the nightly news comes

Who can argue a proven strategy like that? The application, however, always proves to be the litmus test that continues to separate those with only a good plan from those who can actually implement one.

Simply said, too many corporations bet the farm on the Solution-Sell-Strategy at the expense of the most important part of selling - Making the Sale!

Many of the most unsuccessful companies went out of business with some of the best-laid plans and strategies. The fact is, formulating a strategic plan is always easier than actually implementing one. Disproportionate amounts of time and effort spent designing attractive long-term Solutionist strategies pale in comparison to the skills needed to achieve what really matters in the end - Did you make a sale? Which brings us to why the Solution-Sell-Strategy is a myth.

As much as we'd like to think we have evolved far beyond any selling stratagem from the past, in practice, [regardless of what product or industry], think about the one question asked by all sales managers to all salesreps at the meeting held just before the end of each month. "What orders are you bringing in by month end?"

The BOX-SELL-STRATEGY! That's right, it never really went away and it's what successful companies understand to be the most basic ingredient, germane to any selling strategy.

Lets face it, [using the hockey example again], even the puck that goes in off your helmet still counts and can be the quintessential, deciding factor that determines whether a team moves on or hits the links. In reality, how you got it is never as important as whether you got it.

So is the Solution Sell strategy the wrong approach? No, it is now and for the foreseeable future the right approach. What is wrong, however, is to believe - like so many do - a beautiful plan automatically results in sales. It Doesn't!

Under the microscope it appears we all need to feel we have evolved farther than in reality perhaps we have. It has clouded our view of what's truly required to be successful in sales - Fundamental Selling Skills.

To focus only on a plan is to give short shrift to the Art / Science or Discipline of the Professional Solution Sell.

The fact is, good plan or not, an unskilled seller will not recognize a simple buying signal. Untrained reps don't know how to build Trust and Rapport with potential customers. Where there is no argument today is that Trust and Rapport are the bedrock foundation for success of any kind in sales. Even the basic art of overcoming objections is a learned skill as is knowing when or when not to ask for an order. In every respect, these skills need to be taught and honed as truly professional sellers will attest; the techniques integral to the art or science of the sale are, in the end, the stuff that:

  1. Separates the Sellers from the Tellers,
  2. Emboldens good strategies like the Solution Sell, and,

The Bottom Line:

A clear selling strategy in tandem with a proven skill-set are the Yin and Yang components that make up a well balanced formula that all but ensures greater sales and profitability. To believe or practice one without the other is to believe in MYTHS!

What does Obama need to do to get the horse stock market to recover? The horse stock market is in a crisis. People have lost a lot of money on the horse stock market and horses continue to be undervalued. I tried to sell a horse the other week and the most I got offered for my horse was $500. This was for a $25,000 ex show horse who stumbled once in the ring! What does Obama have to do to stimulate the horse stock market?

Obama's standard solution is to tax the "rich" more, so that should also work here. Or, instead of taxing the rich, he could require that all rich people buy two horses, thereby stimulating the market and also having the bonus of perpetuating the myth that only rich people own horses.

Of course, as a rich person, he would have to lead by example, and replace the White House garden with a place to keep his daughters' two new ponies. Maybe Michelle could move the garden project into hanging pots.

Which should I buy a new PC or expand into the world that is the renowned Mac? I'm a student that is pondering my next technical purchase. Being a student I will be using it for coursework and web browsing, I have heard that Macs can be expensive "to run", meaning software can be expensive, whereas my experience with PCs are that they are complicated and break down regularly. Does anybody have a solution to this dilemma?

Admin 14.08.2009. 10:29

It amazes me how many people try bash Macs when their own words make it painfully clear that they have no clue what they are talking about. If Macs where so obviously inferior and not worth the price tag, no one would buy them.

Here are few of my favorite Mac myths:

1) Macs are more expensive than PC's
a) Macs have a USEFUL life about twice that of PC's. A Mac user will be replacing his computer half as often. Have you ever tried selling a 6 year old PC? Macs are cheaper than PC's.
b) In my PC using days, I would plan on buying hardware after bringing home a new computer. Not when I get a new Mac. This too, is part of the cost of using a PC.

2) Everyone uses Windows.
a) Really? Why are we having this conversation?
b) According to a July 2008 article in Macworld, Apple is now the third largest computer company in the world. This means only two PC makers (Dell and HP) are bigger. Hundreds are smaller.

3) Windows is better at games than Macs.
a) And a game console is better at games than Windows.

4) Not enough software/hardware for the Mac.
a) With the exception of games (read #3), there is no class of software available for Windows not available for the Mac.
b) Volume? There is a larger selection for Windows than for the Mac, but walk down the aisle and see how much is crap and/or outdated (and discounted) software.
c) Hardware selection for the Mac is lesser in number, but not as it is for software. Most companies are willing to take the time and expense of coding Mac drivers. Based on my experience, it is the crap hardware that usually does not have Mac drivers. This is because the manufacturer knows Mac users don't buy crap hardware.

6) Macs are gay!
a) Is this supposed to be an intelligent argument?

7) Software written for Windows will not run on a Mac.
a) Software written for the Mac will not run in Windows. What's the point here?

8) Windows 7 will be better than Vista.
a) Remember Windows ME? Windows 7 is likely to be better than Vista. This is not the same as "better than Mac OS".

9) Macs are for multimedia.
a) And web browsing, video/photo/audio editing, word processing, blogging, email, home work, writing, research, and ... you get the picture.

10) Macs are for idiots.
a) Tom Hanks, Stephen Speilberg, Buss Aldin, Martha Stewart, the late Boris Yelsin, Malcom Forbes Jr, Richard Dawkins, Tom Clancy, Scott Adams, Trent Reznor, The Rolling Stones, Bono, Conan O'Brien, Jerry Seinfeld, Rush Limbaugh, Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood, and Tim Allen, must all be idiots.

11) You can't upgrade a Mac.
a) You can upgrade a Mac. Thing is, why would you? It comes fully loaded.

12) Macs are not "compatible".
a) This usually means is "PCs are compatible with PCs". Funny, Macs are compatible with Macs, does that make them "compatible" as well? But that brings us to:
b) Windows cannot read a Mac formatted disc or access a Macintosh network but the reverse is true. Which is more compatible?

13) Macs and PC's both use Intel processors so they are essentially the same.
a) Using this logic, a Yugo and a BMW are essentially the same.

14) Macs don't have a right-click mouse.
a) This is old, wrong, and irrelevant.

15) Macs are hard to repair.
a) FIx 99% of what may go wrong with a Mac:

16) Someone recently argued that he likes Vista because "the virus protection on it is wonderful".
a) That's like saying you don't mind living in East LA because you have good health insurance and a comfortable Kevlar vest.

17) The reason Macs have fewer viruses is because the user base is smaller.
a) Huh? Explaining why it is true does not make it less true.

What are some good things I can sell on ebay? Right, I want to sell some things on ebay which I can get alot of money for. I don't want to sell anything I want to keep (Of course) and I dont want comments suggesting good websites. Can anyone tell me what things I can sell??? Please help!!! Lol

Admin 23.04.2010. 11:02

How ironic that you're asking this question! I went to the library yesterday and picked up a book, "What to Sell on Ebay and Where to Get It" by Chris Malta and Lisa Suttora. The book provides those answers and the science behind selling and sourcing products. The book explains the myths and gives practical solutions to turning your idea(s) into a business venture, rather than simply a hobby income. You'll learn about the legal and financial aspects of a true business that will help (not guarantee) a nice passive income. If you think that sitting home in your underwear to rake in a million dollars a year, you will be sadly disappointed but you'll get out of your business what you put into it... and that starts with planning and research. You CAN make a nice income and business but it's going to require you to DO instead of think. People will tell you to sell what you love but this book destroys the theory of that suggestion. What if what you love doesn't sell??? You end up with a garage or basement full of junk that only you love. That's called collecting, not selling, and definately not earning you money. Grab the book from Ebay, Amazon or the library. The cost if you buy it will be a business expense. It's not just a one time read. You'll want to refer to the book several times for the inspiration and motivation to keep sourcing and keep selling as consumer wants and needs change, which is pretty much daily. Don't be taken in by the terms wholesalers and drop shippers. "What to Sell on Ebay...." will explain the scammers out to take your money for products that are obviously lower priced because nobody wants to buy or sell them. Malta and Suttora will help you locate the "hot" products and reliable sources whether you are selling on Ebay, at a flea market, on your own site, or through a brick and mortar store with or without an online presence. Don't just wait for your ship to come in ... Swim out to meet it!!! Grab this book and others like it that will help you set up a true business instead of just procrastinating and waiting for the right time, the right place, the right conditions to be met, etc. Find out what people are buying rather than just what people are selling!!!

I want to do easy data entry work beside my job for extra incom to live a happy life.? I have been serving in a private bank for 5 days in a week for 8 hrs. So I have a lot of time to earn extra money. I heard it is possible to earn money through online. So how it is possible give me the right solutions.

Admin 16.07.2011. 16:46

Unless you have very specific skills, such as graphic design, web design, computer programming or sell on eBay, there are no real internet work at home jobs. On line jobs are just another urban myth. You will just be bombarded with all kinds of work at home scams such as envelope stuffing, data entry, home assembly, medical transcription, reading e mails, surveys, etc.

Uranium is just as finite as oil. Why does our leader proclaim it as a solution? I just want to raise knowledge of this to people. Bush has said that we should look to Nuclear energy as a solution. Uranium is our only fuel for that form of energy and it is even harder to find/refine than oil... Seriously. He must KNOW this so why does he act like he doesn't?

Admin 02.07.2008. 13:12

They were well paid to promote this nonsense?

According to researchers at MIT, just 9% of the Nevada desert could generate enough quads of electric power (using parabolic trough solar systems ) to provide the entire electical energy needs of the United States.

A fact that Oil/Gas/Coal companies don't want you to know.

Of course, the new President will need to rescind the Bush Administration's ban on solar energy facility development on public land.

It's a myth to say we don't have feasible solar systems. Photovoltaic may not be cost-efficient yet, but larger parabolic trough systems are efficient, practical, and low cost.

The largest operational solar power system at present is one of the SEGS plants and is located at Kramer Junction in California, USA, with five fields of 33 MW generation capacity each.[2]

The 64 MW Nevada Solar One also uses this technology. In the new Spanish plant, Andasol 1 solar power station, the 'Eurotrough'-collector is used. This plant is scheduled to go online in summer 2008[3] and has a nominal output of 49.9 MW.

Kramer Junction Solar Power Plants

The Kramer Junction Company (KJC) is the Managing General Partner of the five 30-Megawatts solar thermal electric generating facilities located in the Mojave Desert at Kramer Junction, California. The designed total combined output of the plants was to be approximately 165 Megawatts at full capacity. Together with its wholly owned subsidiary, KJC Operating Company, KJC operates and manages these facilities (SEGS III-VII).

The Kramer Junction Solar Electric Generating System (SEGS) projects are a series of utility-scale solar thermal electric power plants which were designed and developed in the mid-1980's by LUZ Industries. Solel Solar Systems has improved the efficiency of the HCE technology significantly over the last few years.

The plants operate on solar driven power, to ensure uninterrupted power during peak demand periods. On cloudy days or early evenings, an auxiliary natural gas-fired heater is available and operates to supplement sources of power (the energy supplied by natural gas is limited by regulations to 25% of the total effective annual plant energy input). Operations are constantly monitored and optimized by customized computer controls.

The Kramer Junction project has a 30 year exclusive contract to provide energy agreements to sell to the local electric utility company (Southern California Edison). The Kramer Junction SEGS projects are "peaking" facilities, or in other words, they provide the major portion (over 80%) of their output during those hours when there is the greatest demand on the utility's power supply, particulalry on hot afternoons. Solel together with KJC are working to improve the solar thermal technology and make the cost of producing solar thermal electric power increasingly competitive.

Description of Power Plants

5 fields of 33 MW each
Operational and commercially viable since 1985
Excellent reliability
Displaces over one million barrels of oil
15 additional years working life expected

Is Swiffer WetJet cleaning solution poisonous to cats? I had a friend tell me that Swiffer Wetjet cleaning solution poisoned his cat. He said that he cleaned the floor with it, and then the cat walked on the floor. He said that after the cat licked it's paws the cat died. I have trouble believing that the Swiffer company is selling a cleaning solution that is poisonous to animals.

Admin 08.03.2007. 19:31

No only in high concentration. Its hype and myth, All those stories about death of animals and cleaners, had some sort of issue involved. In most of these stories, the dogs or cats, had already compromised systems (kidney failure, liver failure, or compromised immune systems), Allergic reactions, the owner over used or concentrated the cleaner, or mis-used the cleaner in some way.
If you wash your floor every couple days and dont over use the product then no, the cat and dogs are safe. His cat would have had to had his paws SOAKED litterally SOAKED in the stuff and then licked every little bit off. As a repsonsible owner if your going to clean your house with any kind of strong cleaner you take the precautions your should. Dont let the animal on the floor till dry and to be sure they are not overly concentrated.

Water quality and good food is key.
Water perameters should be a stable and constant ph between 6.8-8.0. Ammonia and nitrite should be zero at all times. Nitrate should be less than 20 ppm at all times. Nitrate is often overlooked because it isn't as deadly as ammonia or nitrite, but high levels of nitrate cause stress. Stress leads to disease because of weakened immune systems. Water changes are the single most important thing you can do for your goldfish. The more water you change and the more frequently you change it, the healthier and bigger your goldfish will be. When I started keeping goldfish I wanted to know just how much and often to change the water, everytime I asked I got a totally different answer. I stoped listening to the big box pet store as I found most really don't have a clue. I began harassing professional goldfish keepers, the ones who sell the goldfish you see in the books and the ones that win shows. If you bug them enough you will eventually get an answer out of them. What I learned is there is a lot of myth about the goldfish out there. I learned from them that goldfish need 10 gallons of water per fish. They need big weekly water changes (25-50%). They need high quality and varied diet. They need constant temperature obtained with a heater, and actually are healthier at temps in the mid to high 70's. They all kept their fish with a heater, every last one of them. Fluctuating temperatures even by as much as a 4 degree swing per day causes huge amounts of stress for goldfish. They use a microscope to diagnose diseases of goldfish, and do not use meds randomly if at all. This is because all meds have an adverse affect on the beneficial bacteria in the filter and can break the system down. Salt at 3% solution and heat to 83 degrees kills everything except flukes and does not kill the beneficial bacteria. Feed medicated food instead of using water additives. Green algae is prized like gold. Green water is actually a good thing. I learned to research anything I might put in my filter or tank to make 100% sure no toxins will leach out. I learned the proper use of zeolite, which is to only use it for emergencies or not at all. I learned a mostly bare bottom tank is easier to keep clean. I learned to mainly take care of water, algae and bacteria and the fish will care for themselves. I learned that the goldfish are NOT easy beginner fish, they are as hard to keep as any tropical or marine fish. (take a look at all the goldfish questions posted here daily and tell me again how easy goldfish are to keep for the novice) I learned what is considered good food and what is not, food that is full of corn, wheat or soybean is lower quality food. Corn of any form cannot be digested by fish so it only adds to waste material, and provides absolutely no nutrition what-so-ever. I learned on my own that "swim bladder disorder" is caused by poor diet, old spoiled food, and high nitrates. I learned you have to throw away any food older than a couple of months. It does not last forever. So if you think you are not getting sound advice out of your big box store and your fish are still dieing after doing what they recommended, then seek out the right information. Its out there. You may have to bother people to get it. You will have to read a lot, there is a lot to know about the humble goldfish.

How can I get my hair to grow quicker? My hair has always takes a long time to grow unlike many girls I know; they gain an inch to their hair every 2 months or so! Is there a way I can get my hair to grow quicker without buying expensive products? Thanks :)

Admin 28.02.2013. 18:42

NEVER take supplements without your doctor's OK.

?Old wives? tales and ineffective products that claim to treat or rehabilitate hair often have a placebo effect because people want them to work,? says Davis-Sivasothy, author of ?Hair Care Rehab,? ( ?But many of these ideas and products actually do the opposite of what?s intended, and they delay the user from seeking out real solutions.?
Davis-Sivasothy debunks the following common hair-care myths:
?áMyth: There?s a magic pill (or oil, serum or balm) to grow our hair faster, stronger or thicker. Unfortunately, no. Hair growth is genetically predetermined and controlled by our hormones. Unless the magic pill affects our genes or hormones, there?s no hope that it might make our hair grow. (This includes prenatal vitamins. Credit the upsurge in hormone levels during pregnancy for those vibrant tresses!) Basic vitamin supplements can offer slight improvements in hair quality, but only if our body truly lacks the particular vitamin or mineral being taken.

If you've straightened your hair in the past, it may grow slowly or none at all.
Google: "Foods for Healthy Hair" - or 10 Best Foods for Your Hair.
NO MATTER which link you picked, they all suggest the same foods. Your hair may be the fastest-growing tissue in the body but, unlike the skin, it cannot repair itself. That is why getting the right balance of vitamins and proteins is imperative. Don't expect to look like you've stepped out of a hair commercial the day after you've changed your diet. It is likely to take at least three months before you actually see tangible results. Hair is dead, but hair also has electrical energy; the negative charge of damaged hair can lead to flyways and unruly hair.

Growing healthy hair doesn't come from a bottle or pills and hair products do not speed hair growth. Any hair oil, is another form to keep hair moisturized, nothing more. If you're in HS, your hair & nails should be growing normally, and as healthily as possible, since you're eating healthy foods. But when hair isn't growing as fast, it's because they've been tampered with: chemicals, hair straightening, etc. . .

Cutting your split ends yourself, spend 5-10 mins. on a sunny day so you can easily spot them, using a 2" scissors, cut strand by strand, section by section, allowing new growth to take over. Then 2x a year, get a good hair cut. This won't speed things up, but it will make the hair look healthier while it's growing. Even healthy hair like mine get them, due to normal brushing & styling. Hormonal changes can have a big effect on hair.

Watch the movie "Side Effects". Hair products are not made of glue to fix, prevent, reverse hair from getting damaged or hair loss, they are a trillion dollar business and they also do not give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss caused by heat & chemicals - hair's worst enemies.

Beginning in February 2008, they experienced one symptom after another: diarrhea, joint pain, HAIR LOSS, lung problems, and fingernails and toenails that fell off. FDA has received numerous reports of harm associated with the use of these products, including stroke, liver injury, kidney failure, heart palpitations, and death. 3-15-11. Pills like medications ALL have side effects. Beware. Example: "I used minoxidil drug to restore the hair on my head; however, I ended up with unwanted body hair. I don't know if it is temporary or I have to seek medical treatment." YA poster 9-27-12. Four men are charged in federal court for selling home-brewed hair growth drugs online.

Fact or Fiction:

"You find people oiling hair every single day, the hair sweats and it doesn?t get washed. What do you think happens? It goes limp and becomes thin because it is not breathing,? Shamillah Mohammed, a hairstylist at SUQA, says.
? The hair on your head grows at about 0.00000001 miles per hour. That's a half-inch per month. Mine grows 3/4" in 29 days.
? Every day, the 5 million or so hairs on an adult's body add about 40 yards of new growth.
? At any given moment, about 90% of the hairs on your head are growing and 10% are getting ready to abandon ship.

How to stop a dog from humping excessively besides neutering? I am watching a friends dog, who happens to be one of my dogs pups. I also have one of the pups, they are a year old. The male dog keeps humping his sister. She is spayed. I have him for a week and it is non stop. Not just dominance, acutally trying very hard to mate with suggestions.

Admin 28.06.2010. 03:59

A good thing that you said besides neutering.

Lets not forget that the surgical removal of a dogs testicle is a very uncomfortable process for the dog, despite the administrated anesthesia. The wound after the operation tend to swell up and can cause the dog a lot of pain and post-surgery infections are not uncommon. The dog will also have to wear the very uncomfortable ?lampshade? for several weeks. These ?problems? might not be relevant considering the advantages of the neutering but its nothing I would want to but my dog though for no apparent reason.

Secondly and most importantly:

There are some negative medical aspects that most vets tend to ignore. For example, neutered male dogs are more likely to develop prostate cancer. About 2% of neutered male dogs eventually contract prostate cancer, compared to less than 0.6% of intact males.

Neutered dogs are at a twofold excess risk to develop osteosarcoma and there is an increased risk of hemangiosarcoma and urinary tract cancer ? the last problem has been increasingly common among dogs lately, probably due to more dogs being neutered. Neutered have a 27% to 38% increased risk of adverse reactions to vaccinations and neutered dogs have also been known to develop hormone-responsive alopecia (hair loss). There I bunch of other problems to deal with as well. In a study of 29 intact male dogs and 47 castrated males aged 11?14, the neutered males were significantly more likely suffer from disorientation in the house or outdoors, changes in social interactions with human family members, loss of house training, and changes in the sleep-wake cycle. This might be the result of depression or drastically hormone change.

The hormoniall change and altered testosterone production have other effects as well. One is the dogs metabolism. Neutered males are known to be mood food fixated. This is not a myth. Castrated male dogs develop a new appetite, making them prone to weight gain This can be dealt with more exercise and changing the dogs food habits. However, through personal experience, ive found that there are very few owners that are experienced or responsible enough to deal with obvious health problem at all.

Dogs are extremely intelligent animals and it would be not only na´ve but irresponsible to assume that the removal of their male organs does not affect their personal lives. Though there are no official numbers yet ? ive had contact with countless of owners claiming that their dogs have lost much of their former energy and zest. Particularly young dogs are known to change their behavior and become more passive and less playful. Some for of doggy depression perhaps?

(Ive also noted a huge difference in the American and European approach to neutering. In American neutering is literally being marketing to dog owners. As if the veteran profession was trying to sell owners surgical operations in the same manner companies would try to sell you dog food. Its preposterous and it is more certainly not a appropriate approach in the nation that is known for their fast-solutions, shortcuts and impulsive consuming. (America that is) Things are different in Europe. In Norway for example, it is illegal to neuter your dog without distinguished medical motivations. Just as its illegal to breed and even buy dogs in my country without the permission from the government.
