Why Good PR Warrants Your Attention

By: Robert A. Kelly

Because good public relations can alter individual perception and lead to changed behaviors among key outside audiences. And that can help business, non-profit and association managers achieve their managerial objectives.

It all happens when you do something positive about the behaviors of those important external audiences of yours that most affect your operation. In particular when you persuade those key outside folks to your way of thinking, then help move them to take actions that allow your department, division or subsidiary to succeed.

I believe the key to good PR is this reality. People act on their own perception of the facts before them, which leads to predictable behaviors about which something can be done. When we create, change or reinforce that opinion by reaching, persuading and moving-to-desired-action the very people whose behaviors affect the organization the most, the public relations mission is accomplished.

In other words, your public relations effort must involve more than special events, brochures and news releases if you really want to get your money's worth.

The payoff can make your day: membership applications on the rise; customers starting to make repeat purchases; fresh proposals for strategic alliances and joint ventures; community leaders beginning to seek you out; welcome bounces in show room visits; prospects starting to do business with you; higher employee retention rates, capital givers or specifying sources beginning to look your way, and even politicians and legislators starting to view you as a key member of the business, non-profit or association communities.

But who among your PR team really understands the blueprint outlined above and shows commitment to its implementation, starting with key audience perception monitoring? Luckily, your PR people are already in the perception and behavior business, so they should be of real use for this initial opinion monitoring project.

Be certain that your public relations people really accept why it's SO important to know how your most important outside audiences perceive your operations, products or services. Make sure they believe that perceptions almost always result in behaviors that can help or hurt your operation.

Talk it over with them, especially your game plan for monitoring and gathering perceptions by questioning members of your most important outside audiences. Questions along these lines: how much do you know about our organization? Have you had prior contact with us and were you pleased with the interchange? Are you familiar with our services or products and employees? Have you experienced problems with our people or procedures?

Because it can run into real money using professional survey firms to do the opinion monitoring work, you may wish to use those PR folks of yours in that capacity since they're already in the perception and persuasion business. But, whether it's your people or a survey firm asking the questions, the objective remains the same: identify untruths, false assumptions, unfounded rumors, inaccuracies, misconceptions and any other negative perception that might translate into hurtful behaviors.

What your aiming at, obviously, is a PR goal that does something about the most serious distortions you discover during your key audience perception monitoring. Will it be to straighten out that dangerous misconception? Correct that gross inaccuracy? Or, stop that potentially painful rumor cold?

Of course, without the right strategy to tell you how to proceed, you won't get there at all. So keep in mind that there are just three strategic options available when it comes to doing something about perception and opinion. Change existing perception, create perception where there may be none, or reinforce it. The wrong strategy pick will taste like horseradish on your pancakes, so be sure your new strategy fits well with your new public relations goal. You wouldn't want to select "change" when the facts dictate a strategy of reinforcement.

Here, you must come up with a well-written message and send it to members of your target audience. It's always a challenge to create an actionable message that will help persuade any audience to your way of thinking.

What you want now is your strongest writers because s/he must build some very special, corrective language. Words that are not merely compelling, persuasive and believable, but clear and factual if they are to shift perception/opinion towards your point of view and lead to the behaviors you have in mind.

After your PR team has signed off on draft copy of your message, you move on to the next selection process -- the communications tactics most likely to carry your message to the attention of your target audience. There are scores that are available. From speeches, facility tours, emails and brochures to consumer briefings, media interviews, newsletters, personal meetings and many others. But you must be certain that the tactics you pick are known to reach folks like your audience members.

An alert: you may wish to avoid too loud a voice with this kind of message and unveil it before smaller meetings and presentations rather than using higher-profile news releases, as the credibility of any message is fragile and always at stake.

From this point forward, you'll start getting requests for progress reports, which tells you and your PR team to begin a second perception monitoring session with members of your external audience. You'll want to use many of the same questions used in the first benchmark session. But now, you will be on red alert for signs that the bad news perception is being altered in your direction.

It does seem fortunate that such matters usually can be accelerated simply by adding more communications tactics as well as increasing their frequencies.

The value of public relations to managers becomes clearer when you realize that the people you deal with behave like everyone else - they act upon their perceptions of the facts they hear about you and your operation. Which means you really have little choice but to deal promptly and effectively with those perceptions by doing what is necessary to reach and move those key external audiences of yours to actions you desire.

What really made Princess Diana that great? I mean in reality, w/o all the bleeding heart PC critique? She was one of the many short lived flings of Prince Charles, only she ended up married to him. She was a shop-a-holic pampered b*tch throughout the 80's and the early 90's and when her fortune started going dim she made half-@ssed humanitarian efforts toward solving the popular social problems and got a lot of good PR for it. When ya look back on it, she didn't really do anything too different than what Hollywood celebs like Angelina Jolie are doing now. She was just a pioneer of faking she cared and getting more attention than she warranted for it. What's your thought on the matter though? What really made her special beside being one of the only hobbies of Prince Charles' disgusting and voracious sexual appetite to get him hitched?
OK j j that's all fine and dandy but what the Hell did that have to do with anything at all? That wasn't even close to pertinent.. I fear I may have put this into the wrong section/category.

Please advice related to australian bad debt issue.? Hello,

I stayed in australia for 3 years that is 2004 to june 2007 in student visa. While comming back to china i had around 18000 $ debt (credit cards, personal loan etc) and i was under bridging B visa(I applied PR).I was suppose to return to australia in 20 days else my PR application will cancel but unfortunately I could not return to australia because of an accident in china at that time.

My question is, its almost 5 years i left australia. I have an opportunity to go to australia now. Will i be stopped at immigration and punished?because i actually didn't want to return without paying back.

My second question is, if i go through immigration without any problem can i open a savings bank account?

Please advice me!!

Thanks and regards.
Hello thanks for answering, can you please let me know in detail as i didnt get any mail from the companies for repay. Can i know my status through credit statement.

Admin 18.03.2012. 06:11

Simply having a debt to a non-government organisation won't result in any problems with immigration but that's a large debt so it's quite possible that the companies involved have taken legal action against you and that convictions or warrants have been recorded in your absence. If you have outstanding warrants or criminal charges, you could well have problems when you try to enter the country. Sort it all out before you apply for a visa - it's a long way to travel only to be turned back at the Point of Entry.

You can open a saving account but if you open a bank account, you will soon come to the attention of your creditors. Again, it's best to sort it all out and repay the debts before you come.

Can a telephone company really refuse compliance with requests? to initiate wiretaps against suspected terrorists just because their retroactive immunity for spying on Americans expired?
Afterall, if they have enough suspicion on a person to say they lost intel, they could just pick it right back up under FISA could they not?

Whi really buys this load? Why?
That is what I'm wonder Chevy. If they actually lost intel when FISA allows them 72 hours without a warrant, and the person is an actual suspect, a warrant can be obtained. So they are either lying about losing intel, or they are giving it up for politically motivated reasons, and once again playing politics with American lives just for a way to throw jabs at the democrats.

Admin 23.02.2008. 17:34

it seems that the authority is already their to do what Bush wants them to do, but for some reason they want to exclude any warrants and just have free reign to do whatever they want anytime they want~!!!

its like a spoiled kid who gets whatever he wants but then he crosses the line and you have to start taking stuff away from him~!!!

its your own fault for not payin attention, and just gave him everything he asked for in the first place, just to shut him up~!!

Internet Website Marketing Ideas? I own a small internet web maternity clothing shop. www.hautemamacouture.com I get almost no business to it at all. I tried paying for advertising with search engines but I had too small a budget (spent $100 on 4 different engines/month). I also have the same items in a store on eBay. That's where I make 99% of my money. However, with their recent announcements of fee increases, they should just change their name to FeeBay and their changes to the feedback policy that will not allow a seller to leave negative when warranted, I can no longer afford to do business on there. I spend about $500-$1,000 in eBay fees a month but I make about $4,000 a month. How can I shift some of this around to promote my website. I am on a very limited budget and have no idea how to get people to go to this website and buy. Thanks!

Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it's easier said than done.

You can use pay per click advertising in the search engines to reach audiences looking for your products. You can use Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com

Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE!

Recommend Site Scripts (various) http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_Scripts/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Big Nose Bird Recommend this Site http://bignosebird.com/carchive/birdcast.shtml
CGI Resource Index http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Hostscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Site_Recommendation/index.html

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

If you are going to read only one piece on search engine optimization, I suggest you read Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld.com's "Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone: 26 steps to 15k a day." http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm

4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

Here is a comprehensive list of where to submit your articles http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=AhzreGmnCUicOoyedqypscUjzKIX?qid=1006022407481

6. Improve your conversion. Getting visitors is one thing; getting them to buy your products is a whole different story. Read the article " How To Sell More on the Web: 30 Tips To Increase Conversion Rates For An Ecommerce Site " http://www.powerhomebiz.com/092006/ecommerce.htm for tips on how to improve your conversion rates.

7. Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are:

Craigslist http://www.craigslist.com
Google Base http://base.google.com
Classifieds for Free http://www.classifiedsforfree.com/...
Text Link Exchange http://www.txtswap.com/
Recycler.com http://www.recycler.com/

Dear John, Today the postman delivered 4 Calling Birds. Now really, they are beautiful, but don't you think enough is enough? You're being too romantic. Affectionately, Aberdine
Dear John, What a surprise! Today the postman delivered 5 Golden Rings; 1 for every finger! You're just impossible, but I love it. Frankly, all those birds squawking were beginning to get on my nerves. All My love, Aberdine
Dear John, When I opened the door there were actually 6 Geese a-laying on my front steps. So you're back to the birds again, eh? Those geese are huge! Where will I ever keep them? The neighbors are starting to complain, and I can't sleep through the racket. Please stop. Cordially, Aberdine
John, What's with you and those F---ing birds? 7 Swans a-swimming? What kind of goddamn joke is this? There's bird crap all over the house and they never shut up. I can't get to sleep at night, and I'm a nervous wreck. It's not funny! Stop with those F---ing birds already. Sincerely, Aberdine

The cows are getting upset and they're stepping all over those screeching birds. What am I to do? The neighbors have started a petition to have me evicted. You'll get yours... Aberdine
You rotten pr*ck! Now there are 10 ladies dancing. I don't know why I call those sluts ladies. They've been at it all night, along with those frigging pipers! Now the cows can't sleep, and they've got diarrhea. My living room is a river of turds. The commissioner of buildings has subpoenaed me to give cause why the building shouldn't be condemned. I am going to ask to ask the police to intervene. One who means it. Venomously, Aberdine
Listen F---head: What's with the 11 lords a-leaping all over those maids and ladies? Some of those broads will never walk again! Those pipers have run through the maids and are committing bestiality with the cows. All 23 of the birds are dead! They've been trampled to death in the orgy. I hope you're satisfied you rotten, vicious, swine. Your sworn enemy, Aberdine
Dear Sir: This is to acknowledge your latest gift of 12 fiddlers fiddling, which you have seen fit to inflict on our client, Aberdine. The destruction of course, was total. All correspondence should come to our attention. If you should attempt to reach Aberdine at the Happy Valley Sanitarium, the attendants have instructions to shoot you on sight. With this letter, please find attached a warrant for your arrest. Sincerely, Badger, Bender, Cajole - Attorneys at Law

What should I do about my roommates? Dec. 10th, 2 am.
S (my BF) went out to ask them to stop yelling after being woken up. C (the roommate) states she?s doesn?t understand why she can?t ?do what she wants? and claims she?s been trying to be quieter throughout the week. This is true, but she says that D (the apt manager) says it doesn?t matter on the weekends. This should not matter. We are still living here on the weekends and have obligations such as S?s job and me having to studying for and taking final exams. S asked ?what 19 year old screams and yells for no reason.? C responded, ?I do,? signifying her immaturity and lack of respect. I pointed out that it is a matter of respect for her yelling at 2am, but she still doesn?t understand why she can?t ?do what she wants? in her self-centered little world.
Another issue has been the thermostat. The air condition has been turned to ?off? for about two weeks now. It is getting into the colder winter months and we have been trying to leave the heat on and set at 68* F, but it either gets turned off or the air turned on. I woke up freezing this morning because after we talked, C decided to turn it to off, after she had said she was leaving it alone recently. She doesn?t understand how the thermostat works. Just because the heat is on does not mean it?s going to get hot in the apartment. We just don?t want it to be 30* like it is outside. But if C does happen to get cold, she will turn the heat up to 80* and it will continuously run until she gets hot and turns the air on. About a month ago, I overheard her say she turned it on so ?she would be comfortable while putting her lotion on.? The heat ran for about thirty minutes that day, then the air for about he same amount of time when she was done putting on her lotion.
They are too immature to be living by themselves, in an apartment, where they are unable to control their childish actions. C especially, who enjoys running into the walls and banging on doors and screaming for no apparent reason.
With constant stress throughout the week from school, unnecessarily added stress on the weekends from not being able to get the extra sleep I was hoping for has taken a toll on my health. After the first incident, I was so upset and angry that I became physically ill and unable to eat. I lost five pounds within a week. I am still losing weight from the constant stress even though I am now have more of an appetite and am eating meals regularly.
None of this would even be an issue if they were respectable, mature adults about the situation. We have brought it to their attention on several occasions, and while yes they have calmed down some, there is no reason for the backlash we are receiving for simply asking them not to be yelling at 2 in the morning, whether it is the weekend of not. We have done nothing to impede their own living abilities. We try not to make noise when we know they are sleeping. This is a ridiculous argument only because two little girls, who haven?t grown up yet, aren?t getting their way.
Normally I am a very agreeable person, shy even. But when these problems constantly persist and they continue to show disrespect towards us and talk ?behind our backs? when we can clearly hear them and when we have done nothing to patronize them and only ask for respect in return, then I am going to get upset and seek my due justice as an adult citizen. I will not allow an immature child who needs supervision to ruin my life.
If this were any other apartment complex then they would have broken several lease agreements, including noise violations and illegal activities that would warrant their eviction. Just because the apartment is related with a college campus it should not mean that some parts of the lease don?t apply ?on weekends.? In fact, rules should be applied more strictly because of lack of maturity seen in some students. A lack of maturity and failure to be responsible and respectable can lead to similar situations and can also result in misuse of the property and amenities.
The world is full of rules and regulations. There are some people who think that the rules shouldn?t apply to them and when those rules are broken, others have to suffer for it. There is no reasonable explanation that they should be making so much noise and screaming in the middle of the night. If nothing is taken care of by the manager or between the four of us, then I will take legal action.
Dec. 11th, 11:15pm
C's Facebook post
i just screamed because _______<--- insert reason here.?this will clear up the assumption that we scream for no reason.
???B (the other roommate) - i just screamed because I was doing an impersonation of kim k...
C - i just screamed because there was a bug flying around the apartment...

This only proves their childishness. Posting the drama THEY are causing to Facebook.
They are only making this situation harder than it needs to be. Instead of being adults about the situation, they take our simple request to not scream in the middle of the night to the extreme and assume that they aren?t allowed to make any noise at all. This is not the case. S and I don?t care what they do during the day, but it is unacceptable after certain hours of the night.

And then C persists to come out and mock us; ?Can you be a little quieter, I?m trying to study,? speaking to a quiet room. She constantly berates us with her immature backlash, ?behind our backs? once again when we can clearly hear her snide comments. And then trys to act innocent when we confront her about it; ?I don?t understand.?

I'm 21 and a senior in college. I have never dealt with anyone so immature and hateful as these two roommates.

Look for new roommates. You might have to find an apartment. But there are nicer people out there.

a question about band politics...for anywho has been in a band or know about the business? hi guys would really love some help here,

i started a band a while a go and were are about to have our first meeting regarding politics. this being money, royalties direction ect.

i personally think that , for example, who ever has written a song should have the first say on its arrangement and generall sound.of course every band should be a democracy though.

i've written some songs and im pretty sure on the overall sound, and i've written all the lyrics. I know i sound pretty big headed and selfish but im really not like that, i just want to get this bit sorted out. what are you views royalties wise?

Admin 13.06.2009. 21:59

It's up to your band to be honest. Some bands divide it equally, some divide it proportionally. A legally binding band agreement is important though, and there's lots of things you have to think about if you're planning on getting big.

For example. Say you divide the money up based on how much influence someone has had on writing a song, what happens if say you write the majority of the songs and then leave? Do you take the songs with you or do they stay with the band? If they go with you, can the band continue performing them in gigs? If no, will you compensate them?

This is more complicated, but say you're about to release an album, have spent 500,000 on publicity and then someone decides to leave? Events like this can damage a band forever because it damages the tour bands usually go on after the PR section of the campaign (interviews, signings etc) and can lead to escalation in rumours about the bands stability, which can give you media attention, but can also be damaging. Will there be clauses on when members can and can't leave? If they leave when they agreed not to, how will the band be compensated?

Also, bands rarely make profit from gigging (even when they get huge) because of the sheer cost in touring, so if someone in the band writes 95% of the material, they'll be receiving loads of money and the other 5% will be divided between the other members. Won't be good on moral, will it?

There's things you have to think about now. Who owns things bought exclusively for the band? If only the person who bought it owns it, what happens if they leave?

Of course, a lot of these problems can be settled by having a blanket 'equality' policy a little like Coldplay have, where all the members are credited for writing the music and all receive exactly 25% of the cash made. But then, what happens if only one or two of the band members are artistic? They'll be getting 50% between them for doing almost 100% of the work.

I know that's a lot and there is MUCH more to consider (legal ownership of your name, logo's, who does the media work withing the band and more) so I suggest writing a basic agreement for now and if you reach the stage when all the above is warranted, then you'll have a manager or lawyer, who will help you sort it all out.

Bets of luck.
