The Immune System is probably the most important system in your body. It was designed by nature, millions of years ago, to aid the body in recovering from injuries and illness. In other words " a natural built in healing system " .

Your blood is composed mainly of red and white cells, the red ones carry the oxygen and nutrition to all parts of the body, the white ones are the defenders and scavengers of your body, during infection, they are immediately called upon to fight the infection and clean up afterwards.

These billions of cells work very hard and consequently they have quite a short lifespan, usually, only a few days.

Originally the Immune System did not face as many problems, as it does in this day and age, now it has to cope with pollution, poisons, toxins, pesticides, herbicides and chemicals, in the air that we breathe, the food that we eat and the water that we drink. As you will understand, the immune system is fighting a huge battle, just trying to cope with all these attacks that are happening every day. Luckily for us, these cells can be generated very quickly, so with the correct nutrition, it will not take the immune system much time, to get back up to full strength.

When you have a vaccination, your immune system is given a copy of a specific disease, so that if the system comes across the disease again, the memory cells in the immune system, will know exactly what action to take, likewise, if you have had a disease before, they know what to do in the event of reinvasion.

The cells involved in your immune system, have what is called " cellular communication " , this means that the cells all talk to each other, they ask each other if they are OK, if one says it is unwell, the others will all help it to heal, if it is beyond help, the other cells will exterminate it and then eliminate it completely from the body.

Sometimes the immune system will go astray and start attacking the good healthy cells, then problems occur which are known as auto immune system diseases, which can cause cells to mutate with all sorts of consequences. Auto Immune System diseases are increasing all the time, and is one of the most serious threats to good health.

There is a natural slow decline in the efficiency of the body's immune system, which partly comes with age; you tend to absorb some nutrients less efficiently.

How does taking cold shower help to boost my immune system? I've heard that taking cold shower every morning is very helpful in boosting immune system. Is it true? If it is, how?

That is not true. People who need to prove they are tought like to take cold showers, but it doesn't make your immune system tougher.

What are some ways to boost my immune system for this cold and flu season? It seems that every year I get at least 3 or 4 colds/sinus infections and the flu at least a couple of times and it seems that it just gets worse every year. I pretty much catch any virus thats going around and frankly I'm getting tired of it. I'm looking for ways that I can boost my immune system so I don't get sick this cold and flu season. I plan on getting a flu shot as well. Does anyone know of some ways I can boost my immune system? I was thinking maybe of making like a smoothie or shake with several ingredients that help boost the immune system? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Try taking AirBorne (a supplement that boosts your immune system) and try to steer clear of people that exhibit symptoms of cold/flu.

Also you might want to try increasing your daily intake of vitamins, especially Vitamin C which can be found in orange juice and other fruits/juices. As you mentioned, smoothies can do wonders for your immune system, given they contain proper ingredients. Tropicana has a delicious brand of smoothies that are high in vitamins and nutrients that help to safeguard you against bacteria/other germs.

Make sure you get plenty of rest each night, otherwise it significantly lowers your immune system's ability to fight off disease and other air-borne germs.

Definitely wash your hands a lot as well, and try to not touch the door handles in public bathrooms - this is a huge germ collector. Hope this was helpful, good luck!

What vitamins can I take to boost my immune system? I feel like I always catch everything that is going around. What vitamins should I be taking to boost my immune system? I'm also allergic to gluten so could that have something to do with my weak immune system? I know it affects the absorption of vitamins and minerals but I really don't know what to do anymore.

Vitamins don't really DO much to boost Ones Immune System... Just try to stay on a GOOD diet, & get plenty of Sleep & Exercise- & that's about the Best You can Do... [ And by the Way; DON'T go out of your "Way"-to avoid Illnesses from Others. As Counter-productive as That might sound; the CHALLENGES to Our Immune Systems- Also strengthens Them ! So the MORE You "avoid" sick people, -the More likely you ARE going to come down with Something !!! ].

-Get enough sleep at night.
-Consume plenty of water.
-Consume plenty of fruits and veggies.
-Eat a healthy and well balanced diet.Cut back on junk and fast food.
-Increase antioxidant and vitamin intake.
-Keep your hands washed.
-Stay away from sickly people.

If you don't, you need to change many habits.

-Eating.Don't eat junk food or processed foods.Stick to fresh fruits and veggies.Healthy snacks and cereals.

-Take a good quality multivitamin.One-a-day vitamins don't do anything...get a good quality supplement.

-Consume plenty of water.At LEAST 8 glassed of purified water a day.

-Exercise.It does help build immunity.

-Sleep.Get at least 8 hours of sleep a night.

-No stress.Cut down the stress.

-No alcohol, drugs,coffee or smoking.It depletes the immune system and body of important nutrients.

-Increase your intake of antioxidants.You can try suppliments good for immune health whether it be vitamins or herbs (make sure it is fresh quality otherwise it will not work)

-Take probiotics.

You need Vitamin C. Try drinking OJ every morning. Thats the best way or yes you can take a Vitamin C pill. Also you can boost your immune system with laughter. So lighten up about life and watch a few funny movies.

What can I do to boost my immune system? I want to be sure I don't catch whatever sicknesses are going around campus this winter. I already wash my hands and such of course. But any vitamins, minerals, other foods or anything that will boost my immune system? Or does exercise help? Getting enough sleep? Any other tips?

Keeping healthy, getting the sleep you need, eating right etc. is very important in having a good immune system. Also, keep warm in the cold and cover up exposed areas is important.

At the store you can buy echinacea which is an herb to "temporarily" boost your immune system. You don't want to take this every day for the rest of your life though because in the long-run it will weaken your immune system.

Also it doesn't hurt to take a daily dose of vitamin C, and even Zinc can help as well. I personally call Zinc, echinacea, and vitamin C the antidote for common colds. If you have a cold you'll get better faster (along with plenty of fluids) and if not, then they all help to prevent them. Take care!

How can my diet boost my immune system but not the immunity of the cancerous cells? Hi, I had my first chemotherapy and I learned that I should eat fruits and veggies that would boost my immune system. I also read online that as I do that, I may be making the cancerous cells more resistant to the chemotherapy. Is that possible?

Cancer cells don't have immunity. The immune system is a system, and a system by definition is a group of organs working together with a common purpose. A cell cannot have an organ system.
Cancer cells have some protective proteins in them, but Chemo destroys the cells regardless of how strong they are. A cell can't recover from Chemo exposure, period.

I would be careful what you read. There is a lot of BS online plus all cancer is not the same. Different cancers have completely different causes, treatments, symptoms, qualities etc. So you can't group all cancers together. Different cancers function in different ways so what could worsen one cancer could help destroy another.
Talk to your oncologist, but over all.. as long as you eat healthy and appropriately, it's not going to make much of a difference in your ability to fight your cancer. Chemo is still toxic (that's how it works) and still destroys your immune system far past to the extent that a healthy diet could rebuild it to.

Vitamins A, C, & E are great for the immune system. You can buy multi-vitamin supplements from a local drug store near you or maybe pre-natal vitamins will help you, too. If you want to get the vitamins through food naturally, fruits & vegetables are GREAT sources of vitamins, especially oranges, apples, etc. Blackberries, blueberries, any berry, etc. are great sources of anti-oxidants, too. How do I boost my immune system and exercise without loosing weight? I really want to get healthier. Boost my immune system. Do some exercise. But I have already lost weight as it is and im tiny, I dont want to loose anymore if anything I would like a gain a bit. I don't went anything overly complicated or hard to fit into my everyday routine.

Doing an effective whole body conditioning workout
can be done entirely at home without any fancy equipment. A couple of
dumbbells is all you will need. (Even if you don't have dumbbells
there is usually something lying around the house that is heavy enough
to substitute in for them).
Here is a list of 20 exercises you can do right in your own home for
a great whole body conditioning workout.


Group 1:

Bodyweight Squats
Bulgarian Split Squats
Prisoner Squat
Reverse Lunge
Step Ups
One Leg "Get Ups"

Group 2:

Push Ups
Push Up and Point
Mountain Climbers
Decline Push Ups
Push Ups/Stick Ups
Step Up and Press
Squat and Press

Group 3:

Side Plank
Curl and Press
One Arm Rows
Bird Dogs
One Leg Deadlifts

Pick one exercise from each group and do them all back to back for a
mini circuit of 3 exercises. Do each exercise for a timed interval of
10 seconds for a total of 30 seconds per mini circuit.
As you get better at them work up to doing each exercise for 20
seconds for a total of 60 seconds per mini circuit.
Take 30-60 seconds rest between mini circuits.
For beginners do a total of 3 mini circuits to start. Working up to 4
or 5 as you get better at them.
Once you're ready to move to the next level add a second mini circuit
by choose 3 different exercises (one from each grouping). Do your
second mini circuit with the same time of work to rest ratio as your

Congratulations on wanting to boost your immune system! I have nothing to sell and no agenda other than wanting to help you. It is extremely important that we each become proactive and responsible for our own health, and the health of our families, if we are parents. You didn't say. I am a parent and so I do things to help myself and my loved ones.
There are quite a few things you can do and I will list them in no particular order:
1. Good hygiene~bathe at least once a day, wash hands often if out in public, but try to avoid the anti-bacterial soap as much as possible as it kills the good and the bad bacteria since it cannot tell the difference. Some bacteria is good and it protects you from the bad. I would also avoid the hand sanitizers as much as possible for the same reason. These products should be used sparingly.
2. Eat healthy. Avoid highly processed foods (such as Hamburger Helper, Manwich, frozen meals, etc) as these are full of chemicals.
Try to eat fresh fruits and veggies, or lightly steamed veggies. Organic is best as these do not have pesticides in them. There is a number code on fruits and veggies found on stickers. Those starting with a 3 are irradiated, those starting with a 4 are conventionally grown, those starting with an 8 are genetically modified, and those starting with a 9 are organic. Shop smart and avoid all 3's & 8's, especially!
Meats that are "natural" (no anti-biotics or growth hormones), fresh eggs from a farm, honey from a beekeeper, real maple syrup and not any of the store brand fake stuff such as Aunt Jemima's or Log Cabin.
Real butter instead of margarines and spreads, olive oil instead of any vegetable oil. Margarine and all vegetable oils cause heart disease.
Avoid soy foods as they are not healthy for you (see resource below). Try to avoid all foods with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as one of the top 5 ingredients. I try to avoid HFCS all the time, but this can sometimes be hard.
Eat more whole grains in breads, bagels, and other bread and cereal items. Old Fashioned oats are a much healthier choice than "One mInute" or the instant kinds with added dried fruits and sugar.
Avoid sugar as much as possible as it is an inflammatory agent and lowers the immune system.
3. Drink plenty of spring water from a reputable source. The media constantly tells us that bottled water isn't any better than tap water, and if you buy bottled tap water (labeled as "drinking" water), then they are right, but spring water is a good choice. My favorite is Ice Mountain as it has a clear and fresh taste.
4. Cut out all sodas, especially diet sodas as they are all poison. Avoid aspartame and Splenda like the plague! These are poisons. Other sodas are made with HFCS and are very bad for you.
5. Try not to eat out often and make it a "treat" that happens maybe once a month or less.
6. Take supplements such as calcium, magnesium, selenium, and a good multi-vitamin. Most Americans are calcium-deficient.
7. Take a 20 minute walk daily.(Or more!)
8. Try to destress your life. Get plenty of sleep. Make sure you get as much sunshine as possible (early morning and late evening) for plenty of vitamin D, and get some fresh air every day.
9. Eat plenty of high quality protein to help build strong muscles (remember your heart and brain are muscle!), and try to have a high-protein breakfast as this is the best fuel to get you going. Bacon and eggs, scrambled eggs (and keep that beneficial yolk!), an egg sandwich, all of these are good breakfast choices.
10. Learn about some alternative remedies that will keep you healthy if you should get a cold, the sniffles, flu-like symptoms, or fatigue. Doctors have their place for when we have major issues such as broken bones, but for simple ailments, begin to self-educate about home remedies as these work and are much less invasive than pharmaceuticals, whether OTC or by prescription.
I left many resources to back up my statements so you could read more indepth. It can help you get started by looking for more sites. The Weston A. Price Foundation has a ton of interesting articles pertaining to good health. The last resource has an awesome book on home remedies that every home should have as it is a gold mine of simple remedies for the simple illnesses in one's life.
