Natural Foods Defined

By: Stephanie Yeh

With so many people concerned about natural and organic foods these days, it's useful to stop and really take a look at what " natural " and " organic " foods really are. We all know that natural and organic foods are better for us than highly processed or artificial foods, but do we really know which foods are natural and organic? When you buy food that is labeled " natural, " what does that really mean? What about " organic " ?

It turns out that the term " natural " doesn't mean all that much. Because it's only been broadly defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it's a fairly arbitrary term, the meaning of which is left up to the conscience of the food manufacturer. The FDA says that any food can be labeled as natural so long as it doesn't include added color, synthetic substances or artificial flavors.

This definition sounds good - until you realize that it can be stretched to include such definitely non-natural substances such as aspartame, the artificial sweetener. More liberal food manufacturers argue that " natural " means any material that exists in nature. While aspartame does not exist in nature (you have to use a chemical process to create it), manufacturers say that the resulting product is made up of two amino acids, both of which do exist in nature. Never mind that they don't exist glued together as aspartame!

So what can the savvy nutritionally-conscious consumer do about this? Go with a term that is clearly defined and regulated by the FDA: organic. In the next issue we'll delve into the intricacies of organic foods, including basic regulations and differing levels of organic production. In the meantime, avoid foods that are only labeled as " natural " and go for those labeled " organic " or " natural and organic. " It's the real stuff.

What are the main differences between all natural and organic foods? I know that some all natural foods can be considered organic but what is it that is holding them back from being completely organic?

Also, what makes organic more expensive?

Admin 05.09.2010. 02:26

Foods can be labeled organic and natural, which means they tend to lack chemically produced substances, but when a food is called organic, this takes the matter one step further. It means that the producer of the food has created the food under strict and regulated circumstances. Government organizations like the US Department of Agriculture create standards, which foods must meet in order to be considered organic and carry an organic label. These foods tend to be free of hormones, are only treated with pesticides considered ?organic,? and the food is produced in a region where organic food production is possible. It can take several years for a farm to convert to the standards required to consistently get that organic label.

Sometimes the line between organic and natural is confused because it would make sense to think of foods that are minimally processed as containing no pesticides. One of the main differences between organic and natural is the way the government defines these terms. When you buy organic foods they must meet certain defined standards.

At present most governments do not have an official definition of natural. They may go so far as to describe natural as not chemically produced, but there is little to no certification for ?natural foods? or things called ?all-natural.? When a food is natural, that really doesn?t tell you much about it, nor does the description guarantee a certain purity or safety of the product. A natural food, unless otherwise labeled, is not an organic food.

What does 'natural' ingredients in food really mean? Fat is natural, asbestos is natural, salt is natural, radon is natural. That doesn't necessarily make it good for you. Are there any guidelines surrounding the term natural in foods?
It seems FDA allows MSG as 'natural'. Cyanide is natural but we can't synthesize and concentrate that then mix into something. Trying to eat right is very frustrating.

Admin 14.04.2007. 12:18

The FDA defines the allowable use of this term in packaging.
Check out their site the info should be there. This always cracked me up. Yes indeed uranium is natural too....

What foods out there increase your metabolism? Looking for foods that speed up metabolism and excersises that someone with advanced stages of emphysema and chronic broncitis can do without getting real short of breath. Can anyone help or suggest? Does yoga make you lose weight?

There aren't any foods that will noticeably impact on your metabolism- this is simply a gimmick some fad diets use. You can however eat to lose fat, and exercise to speed metabolism.

Yoga isn't a big calorie burner- it's more for flexibility.

Losing 1-2lbs a week is the best way to go. This way, you are losing mostly fat, rather than water and muscle. Faster weight loss is not better, nor is it sustainable.

Diet should be what you look at first for weight loss- this is what will enable you to drop fat. Try a balanced diet made up of mostly natural whole foods, with high protein, moderate carbs and moderate fats.

You need to know how many calories you burn- you can use an online calculator for a rough estimate. Aim for 10-20% calories fewer than you burn daily (too large a deficit will be counterproductive in the longer term).

Don't worry about complicated diets or cutting things out. You can enjoy anything in moderation, as long as the majority of your diet is healthy.

Base your meals around:

Lean protein (e.g. chicken, tuna, lean beef, fat-free cottage cheese, egg whites)
Wholegrains (e.g. wholewheat bread, oats, bran cereals, rice)
Healthy fats (e.g. nuts, seeds, olive oil, avocado, salmon, whole eggs, flaxseed)
Fruit and veg

And drink lots of water.

Second in importance to diet, is heavy resistance training- this is what will allow you to preserve muscle so you look 'toned' and defined once you've dropped the fat (rather than just a smaller version of how you look now, with the same bits you're unhappy with). More muscle also means a higher metabolism, so you definitely want to hold on to, or increase the muscle base you have, for fat loss.

You need to work ALL your major muscle groups- you can't spot reduce.

This is anaerobic exercise, so shouldn't make you short of breath.

You can look at extras like cardio to help create a calorie deficit, but cardio is by far the least important of these three, and you can lose fat effectively without it.

Make sure you're getting at least one rest day a week with no exercise at all.

What would the term for my eating be? I eat all sorts of meats, but only organic, free range meat that I buy from local farmers. I also buy most of my produce locally or grow it at home, and if I must buy it at the store I also make sure it is organic.

I know there are all sorts of other terms for other eaters; vegan, vegetarian, freegan, pescetarian, for example.

Is there a term for people who only eat "natural" foods?

Admin 01.12.2010. 05:11

I don't believe people should define themselves so much, but your style of choice of eating is the same as my good friends, He calls himself a "pure organic eater" not really what you may call a label but its something good to say if someone asks, also be sure to say that you only eat free range meat.

How do you really define beauty? We have this image in our heads of what true beauty is, as in what we consider a beautiful woman to look like... I'm talking about outer beauty not inner, anyone can be beautiful on the inside (not trying to be vain)... But what do we have to compare to say that something is beautiful? We don't. If you go and look at other countries and there cultures there image of beauty differs from ours. Some consider obesity to attractive, why I have no idea. Some think piercing on your face makes you attractive, but who made the image that we see in America? Who decided that makeup made you look prettier? I mean have you ever really thought about the concept of smearing colors on you face, it's weird if you really think about it. But being raised in a society where it's normal you don't realize it. Who said being size 2 was pretty? That you have to have straight white sparkling teeth, and that your hair shouldn't be frizzy so we've made straighteners and curlers to change that... What I'm getting at is that is the image we really have of beauty false? Everything we use to make ourselves look better has been made by us, it's not natural. And do you think that our perfect God would make us ugly? So maybe our view of what beauty truly is is truly wrong. Maybe your natural hair, frizzy or not, is more technically more beautiful than that of the pin straight. Maybe or natural skin with dark circles or age spots or wrinkles is more beautiful than that of the fake beauty with makeup put on us to make us look better... I guess I'm wondering why we've had this image of what it is to look beautiful put into our heads when maybe it's really fake and that to be truly beautiful is to be your natural self. Who decided this? What were we able to base these ideas on?

I mean to a point there's going to be things that are obvious but they are technical natural for everyone, for example if we were to eat how were supposed to, natural foods and not processed, than we would naturally be thin. And obviously being thin you're in better health so I don't think anyone would be made ''fat'' when it's unhealthy... So I can see were that's consider beautiful, but as far as a size 2 it is possible to be too skinny making you unhealthy so it goes either way. And if you think about it having long hair is considered beautiful and that too is biblical because it's mentioned that having long hair is, well, beautiful and if you think about it to me short hair isn't beautiful but more of cute.... Okay I'm sorry I've said beautiful about 70 times but I don't know what other word to use.... Okay I think i've basically said everything I wanted, maybe not in the right order and it could've made more sense sorry when I get excited about something I get a little scatter brained.... to conclude all this I guess I just want to know how you define beauty and what you think it's should and is based off of...... or do you think the statement ''Beauty is in the eye of the beholder'' is exactly what we have to base it off, that there just isn't an actual example of real true genuine beauty but only what we think to be beautiful and that's all there is to it....
If you notice both of your descriptions were the exact opposite meaning beauty is only what you think it is, it's nothing more than an opinion...

What type of foods have alot of protein to help you stay in shape and grow? I'm an athelete (baseball player) For high school and I want to be in good shape I already run alot and do plenty of push ups I have a nice physique and want to stay healthy and eat the right foods to grow taller and get more built with alot of protein. Also what would be good to drink? What kinds of meat or fruits should I eat? What would be some ideas of handling my life style with being healthy?

Admin 15.06.2008. 07:26

whey protein, milk, yoghurt, cheese, and boiled chicken. Your bones need phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium while your muscles need water, protein and carbohydrates to grow. Since you are growing taller, both your muscles and bones are getting bigger and longer. Don't waste your money or your health on drugs, alcohol or cigarettes. Eat at regular hours,Don't skip any meal.

Have the hair style that makes you appear taller. In order to appear taller, a hair style should be thin at the sides and higher up top, which can make you appear as much as an inch taller Avoid clothes with horizontal lines. Belts are horizontal so make sure you conceal it in your clothes.
Avoid clothes with a tartan or checked pattern. Avoid cuffs that makes your legs appear shorter.

? Wear clothes with vertical lines or striping. Vertical lines or stripping make a person appear thinner,
and thinness in turn gives impression of more height.

Wear shoes that will make you appear taller. If you are a female, this should be easy since you can find a lot of female shoes with 2 or 3 inches? heels. For males, wear shoes with thick soles to add the illusion of height.

To increase your height, it is important that your blood is oxygenated as blood provides nourishment to your bones. Regular breathing will also purify your blood. There are three phases to breathing:
1. Inhaling - take in air into your body through the nose
2. Retaining - hold your breath inside your body
3. Exhaling - blow out air from your body through the mouth

Grow taller products : The most powerful product to grow taller naturally after puberty is super-growth The first proven natural height growth product.

It is during deep sleep that growth hormone does its job of thickening and lengthening your bones. So appropriate sleeping time (not the longer, the better) and correct sleeping posture is very important for your body to grow. Sleep is defined as a natural periodic state of rest for the mind and body, in which the eyes usually close and consciousness is completely or partially lost, so that there is a decrease in bodily movement and responsiveness to external stimuli.

During deep sleep, growth hormone produced by your pituitary gland is released into your blood stream and travel through your body and causes the thickening and lengthening of your bones. Therefore, you should achieve "deep level" sleep on a daily basis in order to coordinate your affords of exercises and proper diet. The following are some helpful tips on how to easily achieve deep level sleep.

Sleep in a comfortable and firm mattress.
Sleep in a room that is dark, quiet and fresh smelling.
Sleep with clean, soft, and comfortable clothes.
Keep your hands and feet warm. Scientific studies have shown that warm hands and feet will help induce REM (rapid eye movement) deep sleep. Cold hands and feet will keep you from deep sleep.
Drink a big glass of water before going to bed and when you wake up; this will help clean out your system.
Practice total relaxation and deep breathing for a few minutes before you go to bed.
Relax from head to toe. Close your eyes and relax every part of your body.
Maintain a habit of sleeping at the same time everyday, including weekends.
Sleep on your back with a flat pillow under your knees. This will align your spine properly and prevent any back aches caused by sleeping in a bent position.

Undoubtedly, the quality, quantity, and type of food we eat affect our height, growth, and health. We cannot emphasize enough how important your food intake is in determining how much growth you can possibly obtain. The types of food you eat will either improve or decrease your growth potential.
After careful consideration and research, the daily content of protein, carbohydrates, fats and water can be achieved if the following items were taken regularly. Please take note that this is a guideline and you are free to your own thoughts.

Carrots Fish Liver
Egg Yolk Beef Red Meat
Milk Cheese Apples
Green Vegetables Potatoes Nuts
Yellow Vegetables Almonds Bananas
Peanuts Chicken Beans
Peas Salt 6-8 glasses of water per day

If you eat a lot of peanut butter, your height will not necessarily stop. Neither does masturbation stop height.
What might stop you from growing is smoking, drugs, alcohol, lack of sleep, stress, digestive problems, or lack of exercise.

Height Growth Products : The first approved natural product for height increase is Super-Growth with this product it is possible to gain additional height growth even after puberty.

Why would you suppose locke chose life, liberty and property as natural rights? 1.Why would you suppose locke chose life, liberty and property as natural rights?
2. Would a contemporary Communist(if he believed in natural rights) choose these three?

3. Why does locke think that men have a right to revolt? Why does Rousseau disagree?
4.Upon what assumptions does Locke's justification of revolt rest?
5. Is it similar to the idea in Clause 61 of Magna Charta?

6. How would u compare Locke's attitude toward human nature with that of Machiavelli?

'Property' is not only land.
"Sec. 25. Whether we consider natural reason, which tells us, that men, being once born, have a right to their preservation, and consequently to meat and drink, and such other things as nature affords for their subsistence.....
"Sec. 27. Though the earth, and all inferior creatures, be common to all men, yet every man has a property in his own person: this no body has any right to but himself. The labour of his body, and the work of his hands, we may say, are properly his. Whatsoever then he removes out of the state that nature hath provided, and left it in, he hath mixed his labour with, and joined to it something that is his own, and thereby makes it his property. It being by him removed from the common state nature hath placed it in, it hath by this labour something annexed to it, that excludes the common right of other men: for this labour being the unquestionable property of the labourer, no man but he can have a right to what that is once joined to, at least where there is enough, and as good, left in common for others." Of Property

A man owns himself; therefore he owns his labor. So whatever he removes from the state of nature to "join it to something that is his own" makes it his, as well. The earliest nomads, with herds of reindeer, would follow them in their natural progress to search for food. Watching out for their safety, keeping them together, and then using them for food, clothing, and physical labor, makes the end product a product of "property".

Jefferson changed it 'the pursuit of happiness' because of Aristotle's dictum that happiness is every man's goal, but "what shall we define as that which is happiness?" Jefferson and the Founders left it up to every American to discover 'what is happiness' for himself, and if that meant he did or did not seek property, the choice was his.

One answer at a time.

How can I get more defined in my stomach and lose weight in my legs? I am skinny but i want to be more defined in the summer and i feel that my thighs are bigger than last year. I also have a tummy starting to show and i want my stomach to be more defined. Can anyone tell me how lose weight in my thighs and get a more defined stomach fast...i need help!

Admin 18.04.2009. 19:38

You cannot target any one area for weight loss, and none of these things you want to do happen quickly. Weight loss is an overall process and there are no magic answers. Pay no attention to weight loss supplements and pills and all the latest fads. You need to think about many factors but most of them are related to issues we've known about for a very long time. There are many sensible things you can do that will make a tremendous difference over the long term if you need to lose weight. It can be done in a healthy way. This is what has worked for me.

Keeping a food journal really does help. It will give you a much better sense of how much you are eating, and when, and why.

Make a few additional small changes - walk everywhere, always use stairs instead of elevators, walk on escalators, get up and move around at least once an hour if your work or your life in general is sedentary, walk every day, use a pedometer. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a really good idea. Build up to a long brisk walk everyday, or most days. Be more active and watch less TV and spend less time on the computer. Buy one piece of exercise equipment to have at home and be strict with yourself about using it. Sometimes you can find mini-steppers or exercise bikes at second hand stores and thrift stores for just a few dollars.

Start a weight lifting routine. Join a gym. Possibly you can find one that has someone who specializes in weight lifting programs for beginners. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism as well as improve posture and appearance overall. Even if you can't get to the gym you can work out at home using things around the house. Invest in a good weight training book. The Dummies series actually has a good one.

In terms of diet, cut out or reduce things like junk food, pop, fat, fast food. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish. Particularly if you choose a vegetarian lifestyle include natural peanut butter, hummus, dried fruit and nuts. Pay close attention to getting the nutrients your body needs to be healthy.

Make your portion sizes smaller. Use a smaller plate - in our society we have become accustomed to thinking that we need a large plate of food at every meal, and we don't. About quarter of your plate of food should be protein and at least half of it should be veggies.

Learn to count calories. At your current weight and activity level, you may possibly need about 2000 calories or more to maintain your current weight. So you will lose weight at a reasonable and healthy rate if you cut back to about 1600 or 1700 calories a day.

Eat small amounts frequently, rather than three large meals. Never skip breakfast. Include some protein in your breakfast. It will help get you through the day.

Drink plenty of water, at least 8 big glasses of water a day, and more if it is very hot, if you sweat a lot, or if you are exercising intensely, and eliminate fruit juices. Fruit juices have too many calories, so get your vitamins from fresh fruit, not the juice. You will begin to see changes in your body.

Vary your routines. Don't eat the same number of calories every day (vary your calories from 1400 a day to 1900 or 2000 some days), eat a variety of foods, and do different kinds and amounts of exercise. You will lose weight much more efficiently if you mix things up from time to time so that your body doesn't adjust to any one routine.

An area that many people overlook is getting enough sleep. You are much more likely to overeat or to binge eat if you are tired and not well rested, so get enough sleep.

Check out websites about nutrition, exercise, weight training, etc. Here are a few helpful links.

What are some of the best products for people with curly hair to get soft, natural curls? I have extremely thick, long, curly hair. I have tried every product imaginable and just want to know the products that have given you the soft, natural, frizz-free curls all us curly heads are looking for!! Thanks!

Admin 05.02.2009. 04:10

If you want to run out and pick something up locally, I recommend trying the following products (asterisk* by current favs):
- Drugstore: L'oreal out of bed weightless texturizer (black tub, use under gel), LA Looks or Herbal essences* (body envy) gels, Suave naturals* or vo5 conditioners, L'oreal vive pro hydra gloss or nutri gloss* for curly hair, red Cream of Nature shampoo
- Organic/specialty store (like whole foods): Giovanni Direct Leave in condish*, G conditioners, G tea tree shampoo, Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose* or White Camellia Conditioners, AO B-5 Design gel
- ULTA: Devacurl products, Biosilk rock hard gelee, MOP-c curl defining cream (They also carry drugstore products and giovanni.)

These are all good things I have used, but be sure to tinker around with amounts and how you use any products. For hair type specific products check out these forums:
There you can find others with the same hair type and try out some of their favorite products. However, the most popular ones are usually only available online.

Here are some basic tips for curly hair that you might find helpful:
*Try to find a stylist who knows how to work with curly hair. You can find reviews by region here:
*Don't shampoo every day.
*Comb conditioner through hair in the shower.
*Apply styling products to dripping wet hair. Scrunch or twirl hair to achieve desired shape.
*Use styling products suited for your hair type. Don?t know yours?
*Avoid terrycloth towels on hair; use linen, paper towels, or t-shirts instead.
*Air dry or use a diffuser with your blowdryer.
*Don't touch (or brush!) your hair while it?s drying.
*Once completely dry scrunch out any crunchy texture.

Lastly, it has made my hair so much better since I started the curly girl method! I used to almost never wear it down (it was a frizz/poof ball), but now I have pretty, shiny curls. ~:) It?s pretty radical?no sulfates (shampoo) or silicones?but it?s so great for curly hair. Give it a shot and check it out: (outdated product recs!)

What kind of food taken does make the cheek grow with extra skin and flesh? My body is in an average size. I have extra skin and flesh on my face and a little bit on some parts of my body. I most worry about is my face. It is hard to get rid of the extra skin and flesh on my face with just exercise and selection of food and without the medical method and without knowing how? I don't want to take medication or medical surgery, neither makeup. Please tell me how to do the exercise and eat what kind of food to get rid of the extra skin and flesh on my face and cheek.

Admin 22.05.2009. 00:53

I had the same problem. This is he most effective way to quickly get rid of face fat and excess skin. Diet is not going to do it.
Daily massaging dramatically made my face slimmer, more defined and skin much tighter and firmer.
First tighten face skin by partially opening mouth and pulling lips firmly back against teeth. It tightens all of face. Then repeatedly and briskly massage focusing on all of face below eyes, particularly the cheeks and chin area. Do over and over with a forward and back motion using finger tips and front of fingers and sometimes palms, depending where you are massaging. Circular massage is not effective. Use any essential oil, olive is excellent. If you can build up to a 20 to 30 min day massage(can be in 2 or 3 sessions) you will get fast results.
It also rids skin of all blemishes and gives it a vibrantly healthy glow.
Work on the neck also helps slimming face. Place right hand on neck and starting from just left of chin point sweep all the way to back of neck and back. Do several times. Then do other side.
There are some face yoga exercises which are also very helpful. Particularly the" lion face" pose and this variation of that. Protrude the tongue as far as possible as if trying to touch tip of nose with tip of tongue. You can find them on YouTube.
