Also many disorders have been linked to improper immune function including thyroid deficiency, diabetes, rheumatic heart disease, reheumatoid arthritis, lupus and pernicious anemia.

For optimal immune function we need to address any disorders that may be inhibiting immune function. We also need to take steps to avoid exposure to toxins such as pesticides and chemicals we use around the house. Try wearing gloves when cleaning to avoid skin exposure and avoid inhaling fumes from things like bleach, oven cleaners, and the like. Make sure dishes and glassware are thouroughly rinsed of any residue from dishwashing liquids etc. Even though they're more expensive, consider buying nontoxic cleansers. Take steps to ensure that the soaps and shampoos you use are made from the most natural ingredients possible. (Aubrey Organics is a good option.) It's also important to get plenty of fresh air and to drink the purest water available.

First and foremost, make sure you are eating a proper diet, getting enough sleep, and doing at least some form of exercise (even if it's walking around) at least a few times a week. That's the basic way to stay healthy in general, but if you find that you are getting sick more often than you would like, there are some natural options to help boost your immune system.

Eat food, not too much, mainly plants. Get good exercise and rest. Don't smoke, go easy on the alcohol and coffee. If you are otherwise healthy, that's it.

To avoid colds and flus, stay away from crowds and sick people, wash your hands frequently, get your flu vaccine.

Improve Your Immune System

* Make sure to eat those foods that give a boost to the immune system. Food items like apples, oranges, broccoli, cantaloupe, brown rice and olive oil make the immune system stronger.
Green leafy vegetables, whole grains, beans, fruit and roots help in making the immune system stronger.

* Make sure to include fish and poultry in your everyday diet, as they have been found to be beneficial for the immune system.

* Sweets and high-fat food items are a big no-no. Having them occasionally is ok, but don?t make it a habit to have desserts on a daily basis.

* Do not consume too much dairy products. Even red meat and eggs should be taken in moderation.

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceous): This is one of my favorite immune-boosting tonics. It is the root of a plant in the pea family long used in China to prevent illness and strengthen sick people. You can get slices of dried astragalus root at Chinese groceries and some health-food stores. Simmer the slices in tea or soups (they?ll add a pleasant sweet taste). Or buy extracts of astragalus in liquid, capsule or tablet form. Follow the dosing directions on the package. This herb is nontoxic and can be used long-term to increase resistance.

Take immune-boosting mushrooms to enhance your resistance: I recommend to easy-to-take mushroom products, Stamets 7 Mushroom Blend from Fungi Perfecti (www.fungi.com), a liquid extract of seven different species and Host Defense from New Chapter (www.new-chapter.com), a similar mixture in capsule form. Take the amounts suggested on the product labels.

To boost your immune system in general, I recommend garlic. Try to eat one clove of raw garlic a day (mashed or chopped fine and mixed with food).

Is raw garlic safe for dogs to eat? Very confused.
Some 'experts' say it is very dangerous and a def no no, whereas others say it is super healthy, strengthens the immune system, naturally repels fleas etc.
To confuse me even more I notice that there are are a fair few garlic supplements available from pet shops and even through vets??

Regular aerobic exercise can help keep androgen levels (particularly free testosterone levels) naturally lower while maintaining overall health, lowering stress and increasing SHBG .Stress reduction can be helpful in slowing hair loss.

So in summary, exercise will help lowering stress which in turn will help against losing your hair.

Can you develop naturally aquired immunity against Tuberculosis? I have an assignment on TB. We have to specifically focus on the immunity systems response. Just wondering if the immune system produces memory cells after TB infection? In other words, if you have TB and cure it, do you not get it again like chicken pox?

Yes. But it is not necessarily memory. Your immune system, in this specific case, should it not be subject to medicinal interventions, will improve and strengthen against TB as would a muscle becoming stronger through exercise.

When you are sick and you don't take meds. Does your immune system get stronger? I remember a while back, my teacher said its good for you to get sick once in a while. So your system can fight back and get stronger.

So I have a mild fever. Coughing and what not . So my question is, if i don't take Tylenol and let myself naturally heal, does my immune system get stronger? Or I should just take the medicines?

You covered lots of territory there. Tylenol, meds, fever, coughing, immune system.

Let's get started.

Tylenol has no healing powers. Reduces pain and fever a little. Has not bearing on the strength of our immune system.

A mild fever is actually part of your bodies defense mechanism and should not be treated unless it gets above about 103. Leave it alone as long as you can.

The immune system is strengthened by each illness caused by a virus or bacteria. Specific antibodies are developed for the infecting organism. That's what usually cures us, with the assistance of antibiotics in the case of bacterial illness. The more exposures we have, within reason, as children, the less frequently we'll be sick as adults. This immunity building seems to peak by our 30's, but never stops.

Our immune system does a great job of protecting us most of the time. Occasionally it gets overwhelmed. That's where antivirals and antibiotics get to play a role. Would be very unwise not to use them when indicated. Main reason we live 20 years longer than ppl did 75 years ago.

I know from experience that even when I'm not sick or anything that Emergen-C drink powder stuff makes me feel really good. It's main purpose is to strengthen your immune system, which it effectively does. Among its other functions are enhancing energy naturally and giving you more electrolytes.
