The Power of Ice

By: Louise Roach

Using ice to treat injuries is one of the oldest methods of pain control. Proven to be safe and effective at reducing swelling, relieving pain and decreasing muscle spasms, ice therapy is an easy self-care technique that anyone can administer. Every mother knows to put ice on a bruised knee after a soccer game or on a teething toddler's tender gums. But do you really know how ice works?

Cold therapy, also known as cryotherapy, works on the principle of heat exchange. This occurs when you place a cooler object in direct contact with an object of warmer temperature, such as ice against skin. The cooler object will absorb the heat of the warmer object. Why is this important when it comes to cold therapy?

After an injury, blood vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients to cells are damaged. The cells around the injury increase their metabolism in an effort to consume more oxygen. When all of the oxygen is used up, the cells die. Also, the damaged blood vessels cannot remove waste. Blood cells and fluid seep into spaces around the muscle, resulting in swelling and bruising. When ice is applied, it lowers the temperature of the damaged tissue through heat exchange and constricts local blood vessels. This slows metabolism and the consumption of oxygen, therefore reducing the rate of cell damage and decreasing fluid build-up. Ice can also numb nerve endings. This stops the transfer of impulses to the brain that register as pain.

Most therapists and doctors advise not to use heat right after an injury, as this will have the opposite effect of ice. Heat increases blood flow and relaxes muscles. It's good for easing tight muscles, but will only increase the pain and swelling of an injury by accelerating metabolism.

When it comes to cooling devices, different effects will result due to the device's ability to exchange heat. Crushed ice packs do a better job at cooling the body than chemical or gel packs, because they last longer and are able to draw four times the amount of heat out of tissue. The important difference is that ice packs undergo phase change, allowing them to last longer at an even temperature, creating a more effective treatment. Most chemical or one-time-use packs and gel packs do not undergo phase change. They quickly loose their ability to transfer heat, limiting their effectiveness to reduce swelling. Their short duration of cold is not long enough to produce numbness, also reducing their ability to relieve pain.

Cold therapy should always be used as soon as possible after an injury occurs and continued for the following 48 hours at 15 to 20 minute intervals. Remember - if you hurt yourself, you need to ice!

How to get my eevee learn hidden power ice? What do i do to get an eevee that learns hidden power ice. I plan to get an eevee from Bill in Goldenrod city, soulsilver. If it helps, I plan to evolve it to espeon later on. The power doesn't matter, as long as it is ice.

You can't really make it learn a Hidden Power type of move you want. The HP type move is determined by the IVs of the Pokemon and they cannot change. You can do this though: Before you get Evee, save. When you get the Evee go to this site: http://www.serebii.net/games/iv-calcdp.shtml here put the nature, level and stats of Evee to calculate the IVs (EVs put 0 to everything), when you calculate the IVs you the HP type will also be calculated, if you don't get Ice keep soft reseting till you get an Evee with HP Ice.

How do you determine a Pokemon's Hidden Power attack (The type)? I want to know because when I look up move sets sometimes, it'll say "Hidden Power [ice, water]" or something like that. Does each Pokemon's differ? Do I need to do something to change the type it is? Please answer, Best answer is 10 points.

The easiest way is to battle Pokemon with different types. It will determine what Hidden Power your Pokemon have.

But the nicest way and straightforward way to know what type it is, is to bring your Pokemon from your version to Pokemon Diamond, Pearl or Platinum. There is a house in Pastoria City where a man living. The Pokemon on the first slot of your party will be scanned by the man and he will tell you what is that Pokemon's hidden power.

Is a General 210 Power Ice Auger worth buying? Im going to buy an ice auger and was looking at a General 210 power ice auger w/ a tecumseh motor, i was wondering if this is a good auger since i havent heard the brand before, i was hoping someone can inform me on details and if its a good power auger.

Never heard of the brand. I would go with an electric auger (gator is probably the best choice and they have great customer service) or a Strikemaster. Jiffy ice augers seem to have quite a few problems. Especially when you try to start them. I would also stay away from this auger because Tecumseh went out of business 8 months ago. So if a part breaks in the engine you are pretty much screwed. Just my two cents. Good Luck!

Also just wait a month or so and the tackle stores and gander mtn. and cabelas will be blowing all the augers out to make room for all of the incoming openwater fishing equipment. I saved $150 by doing this.

Is this a good pokemon team and which others should I add? Tyranitar:
Moves: Dragon Dance, Counter, Crunch, Earthquake

Swampert:
Moves: Earthquake (not sure on this since I already have it on Tyranitar), Ice Beam, Surf, Stealth Rock

Sceptile:
Moves: Leaf Storm, Energy Ball, Focus Blast, Dragon Pulse

Magmortar:
Moves: Lava Plume, Thunderbolt, Hidden Power Ice, Cross Chop

And which other two pokemon and move sets would you use?

I would suggest first and foremost adding a Shuckle to the mix. Although on initial thought, you most likely are thinking "Shuckle? That weak little turtle thing?", it is a heavily underestimated pokemon.

You see, Shuckle has the best defenses in the game and can withstand almost any attack. It's ability also prevents it from being knocked out by one-hit-KO attacks. With an item like leftovers, it can restore a fair chunk of HP aswell every turn, making it a valuable defensive addition to your team.

Otherwise, your team seems pretty good. Keep it up!

As for moves, I would suggest the following:
Rest (for restoring HP if you do get low on health. By the time your opponent gets close to knocking you out again, you'll be awake)
Attract (in addition to great defence, using Attract makes the enemy (assuming they are of the opposite gender) far less likely to actually attack you, meaning that if they do actually hit you, by the time they land their next attack you will be back at full power)
Double Team (Much like attract, allows you to avoid the enemy's attacks. When combined with attract, the opponent will not only have to get over its infatuation, but will have to get past your evassiveness too, leaving your opponent frustrated that even their strongest pokemon can't hit you)
Toxic (Because Shuckle has pitiful attack stats, Toxic is a great move. It deals the same portion of damage to any pokemon, no matter how strong they are, and does not rely on your attack stats whatsoever (eg, a level 1 pokemon with toxic would do just as much damage as a level 200 pokemon with toxic). In addition to this, toxic increases in the amount of damage it does every turn, meaning that with patience, your enemy will faint soon enough)

To complete your team, I suggest you recruit a strong Psychic pokemon, such as Alakazam to cover that gap in your team. Depending on what purpose you want it to searve (Attacker, Defender, All rounder, etc), you could have a mix of moves like Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, Psychic, Recover, etc.

~1/2 My heart is in Afghanistan~ 21.01.2010. 12:29

Wheres the best place to put skill points in Diablo 2? I'm a sorceress, level 20 and so far I have been putting most skill points on my fire ball which does a 89-123 damage rating at a 9.

I'm not to keen on lightning and it seems like you really have to have a lot of skill in ice for it to make any difference. So I wanted to know in the long run which one would be the best to invest in as my other power, ice or lighting?

How can I become a crime-fighting cat with superpowers? I want to become a white cat with the power of ice.
How do I do this?
I'm human right now, btw.

Barney?

Admin 21.07.2011. 18:45

I know!
Have a white cat bite you on the neck. Then lock your self in the freezer for 4 hours every day. Eat cat food and act like a cat. Make sure you practice your powers! Once you have been in the freezer for 4 hours for 3 weeks, you will notice that you cat shoot ice lasers out of your 'paws'
Also never shave. you want to be a hairy/furry as possible.
After about 1 month of this, and on the last Friday of the month go to bed at 11:11 PM and make your final wish of becoming a Crime-fighting white cat with super powers. Then immediately go to sleep. Wake up at 7:00 AM sharp and you will be a Crime Fighting white cat with Ice powers.
Trust me this works.

An ice cube is placed in a microwave oven. Suppose the oven delivers 135 of power to the ice cube and that it? An ice cube is placed in a microwave oven. Suppose the oven delivers 135w of power to the ice cube and that it takes 35200J to melt it.

a)How long does it take for the ice cube to melt?
It does not say how big the ice cube is. So i dont know how to do this problem, pleace help.

njnets159

Admin 26.02.2011. 02:00

P= (work) / (time)

watts = J/s so 135 watts = 135 J/s

135 J/s = (35200 J) / time

time = (35200 J) / (135 J/s) = 4.3 s

This answer is correct for mastering physics.
