Do you want to achieve your goals ?

Comments (20)

We all have dreams. But almost no one sets goals to achieve them. Everyone knows that goal setting works, but almost nobody uses it. Now there are two questions:

1. WHY?

But the most important question is:

2. What are YOU going to do about it?

First let's take a look at four major reasons why people don't set goals.

1. THEY ARE AFRAID TO FAIL

The fear of failure is probably the greatest single obstacle to success. Many people refuse to set goals because they fear they, and others, will be able to determine if they were successful.

They don't realize that is is IMPOSSIBLE TO FAIL in goal setting. There is just no such thing as failure. But there are such things as OBSTACLES.

Winners don't view failures as failures; rather, they consider them to be learning experiences and opportunities.

Thomas Edison sure didn't succeed with his first light bulb. He once said he discovered a few thousand ways for the light bulb not to work before he perfected the winning combination.

Obstacles will come our way, however, if we perform like a heat-seeking missile. We too can go around, correct our course, and move steadily toward our goals. To get there - and be successful - we must overcome our obstacles and take action.

There is just one guaranteed way to fail - don't set goals at all.

2. THEY DON'T REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF GOAL SETTING

Some people think that their dreams can come true without goal setting. They don't realize that there is no such thing as miracle.

You actually have to DO something to MAKE your dream a reality.

When you set a goal you create a step-by-step plan, your path to your dreams. And then you just have to follow this path, one step at time.

Goals give purpose, meaning and direction. By setting goals, and measuring their achievement, you are able to see what you have done and what you are capable of.

Only goals can change you from a dreamer to a doer.

3. THEY DON'T KNOW HOW

They don't teach us in school HOW to set goals. Although goal setting is the most important skill in humans life. If you know HOW to set goals, you can achieve ANYTHING.

An even worse mistake that people make is to assume that they already know how to set goals. A person who assumes that he or she has a critical skill when, in reality, his or her understanding of it is rudimentary at best, is in great danger of failing at life.

There are two good free tutorials on the net about goal setting:

"How to Set and Achieve a Goal" ( http://goal-setting-guide.com/free-tutorial.html )

and

"Goal Setting - A 20 Minute Tutorial" ( http://about-goal-setting.com )

4. THEY ARE NOT SERIOUS

Many people don't set goals is that they are simply not serious. They are talkers instead of doers.

They want to be more successful, they want to improve their lives, but they are not willing to make the necessary effort. They do not have the "fire in the belly" that translates into a burning desire to make something of themselves, to make their lives bigger and better and more exciting.

The only way you can tell what a person really believes is by actions, not words. It is not what you say, or what you intend, or what you wish or hope or pray for, but ONLY WHAT YOU DO that counts.

Your true values and beliefs are only and always expressed in your behavior. One person who will take action is worth ten brilliant talkers who do nothing.

So... What reason applies to you? Are you going to change it? Are you going to DO something about it? The only thing you need is DESIRE. And right now you have only one decision to make:

to do it or do it not.

Don't wait for a miracle, take action! Learn more about goal setting, about tips and tricks how to achieve your goals, and then use them to make all your dreams a reality!

Effectively track your goals. One of the most common reasons that people don't get to accomplish their goals is that we tend to get distracted, and we lose track of important things that need to be done consistently in order to move forward towards our goals.

Keep yourself constantly reminded of your goals by reviewing them at a specific time each day. It can be in the morning, first thing after you get out of the bed. It can be at night just before you go to sleep. Write down all your goals in a notebook, or store them in a computer software. When you review them, envision how accomplishing that goal will make you feel.

No matter what type of goals you set, you should always find something to track its progress. The benefit of doing this is that you will always know whether you are making progress or not. If you are, you will feel encouraged and become confident that your goal is reachable. Setting and achieving your goal shouldn't be that hard once you have learnt how to effectively track your progress. All you need to remember is to review your goals regularly, break things down into manageable steps, make it measurable and finally track your time working on your goals.
Good luck

Is visualization and positive thinking a helpful method of achieving goals? Does it work for you? Obviously there's alot more to achieving goals then the above but if it does help, can you explain how it works for you?

Thanks

these two help, but as you said, there is a lot more - namely you have to take actual steps towards that goal. visualization and positive thinking just give you the energy to take these steps.

And I hope your goals are not become a star of some kind. B/c chances of that happening are quite low.

first of all be optimistic
set realistic goals
plan - who, how, what, when, by whom, etc.
set objectives - ur goals both short term, and long term
Direction - give direction to ur objectives

It is an impersonal question to distance the asker from the you. Figure out what the asker wants to hear and say that.

How important is Self-reliance in achieving goals? How is Self-reliance important in achieving goals?

Catherine C

Admin 12.01.2009. 14:55

It isn't the most important thing in achieving goals but it is on the list of what you need. Self-reliance will help you get it done when there is no one there to remind you or help you.

My teacher said you don't need self esteem to achieve your goals, how can I prove her wrong? Links to something I can print out would be nice, but she said, for example, you can be determined and still achieve goals/don't need self esteem. How can I prove her wrong? Thanks.

I think I would ask her how she defines "self-esteem". Her definition and yours might be different. There is an interesting article about self-esteem and success on WIki.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-esteem

Go down to "criticism and controversy". Whether or not you believe the you need self-esteem to achieve your goals depends on what school of thought you choose to side with.

How to achieve goals that I set for myself? About two years ago I set some goals for myself. Due to the uncertainities involved, I could not give a timeframe. Luckily,I have got some success but it is like achieving sub-goals. After two years, the larger goal still seems a distant reality.

They expect some original ideas to come from the candidates. I think they want to test the creativity of the aspirants for that post. They may not like borrowed ideas like this.

For instance they may also ask you to count bundle of currency notes or counts number of coins in a bag.

Same reason why a football team has to work together
.
With out leadership of the coach the games will be lost even before the game begins
.
Same with a business there has to be team work or the boat will not float as the captain would explain to the new sailors on board
.

What social changes have occurred in the last century that will help you achieve your goals? What social changes have occurred in the last century that will help you achieve your goals and what changes have made it more difficult for you?

I am having trouble with this question. Please help me out. I would like to say a social change about education or any other ideas?

Without a doubt, the most significant social change of the last century that will help me achieve my goals is the advent of Victoria's Secret underwear.
