Last year, more than eight-point-seven-million people underwent cosmetic procedures to enhance what nature gave them, or didn't. But experts tell us that Americans may be jumping into invasive procedures too quickly.

Despite the media coverage of makeover reality shows, the majority of Americans are not looking for extreme transformations. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, most of us want to look better, naturally, with 68-percent preferring a subtle change. And experts agree that looking your best could be accomplished at home for considerably less.

Dr. Linda Franks, a leader in the specialized skin care frontier, says " To get that timeless, healthy look you need to start with an appropriate skincare regime. Taking good care of your skin can stave off fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and even dry skin. "

Where to begin? At the sink! Doctors say whatever your skin type, the key is to cleanse it gently. Avoid hot water and use lukewarm instead, to prevent over-drying. And throw in the towel - traditional washcloths are too abrasive for the face, so use your hands and fingers.

Sixty-eight-percent of women claim to have sensitive skin which means dry, tight, chapped or easily irritated skin. Dr. Franks advises moisturizing regularly and avoiding harsh cleansers with ingredients such as fragrances, dyes and preservatives because sensitive skin is easily damaged and takes longer to recover.

If your skin is dry and easily irritated, don't wash more than once a day. You may risk stripping the skin of its natural oils. Dr. Franks recommends looking for non-irritating cleansing washes that are soap-free, moisturizers that are light, oil-free, and water-based to help maintain the skin's natural barrier. Another tip - make sure to choose a facial moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15, which protects against both UVB and UVA rays.

Skin sensitivity may also result from the third most common, non-surgical skincare procedure known as Microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a quick and easy, non-invasive procedure that helps to reveal healthier-looking skin by sweeping away dead skin cells. Dr. Franks reveals that, following the treatment, the best way to avoid irritation is by opting for an ultra-gentle cleanser and moisturizer.

A new clinical study shows that PURPOSE gentle cleansing wash and dual treatment moisture lotion with spf 15 are compatible with this procedure.

How else can you obtain optimal skin health? Here are some other healthy basics to keep your skin looking its best:

Dr. Franks says, " Exercise opens up blood vessels to make skin look healthy and youthful. It's so important for healthy skin. " Regular cardiovascular exercise increases blood flow to the skin which assists in collagen production. Maintaining muscle mass through exercise can also help anchor and support skin, keeping it taut.
And drink up! At least eight, eight-ounce glasses of water a day are crucial for optimal skin hydration.

So before you sign on for an extreme and expensive makeover, just think back on some simple, beauty basics! You just might like what you see!

I want to start wearing makeup? I'm 16 and I've never really wanted to wear makeup because I was always really lazy and every time I put on so much as a speck of blush, my dad would become mortified and give me a two hour speech about what my moral values should be in life.

But now that I'm older, I want to experiment. The thing is, I have like no idea where to start. What are the basic things I should get? I know like eyeliner and mascara and stuff, but what else?

My face tends to get oily so if I try to wear eyeliner or eyeshadow, it smudges terribly and I look like a gorilla. Would primer help?

I just kind of need basics. And brand names/stores (not too expensive) would help a ton.

Admin 05.02.2013. 23:56

you can search up TONS of videos on youtube that can help you, because there is a huge community of beauty gurus that film videos every week and post very often. They make videos pointed towards beginners as well, which is awesome!
- "Beginner Makeup Kit"
- "Makeup essentials"
- "Drugstore Makeup kit" etc.

It really depends on your personal preferences. Lots of people have oily to combination skin, but it doesn't stop them from wearing makeup and eyeliner!

you could use a non oil based primer if you want around your eyes, or a non-oil based face primer, if your face/skin is all oily. Some people use a cream eye base, (but some can be greasy) or just water proof eye liner. There's lots of different types of eyeliner, like liquid, pencil, cream, etc. experiment w/ them, i guess!

Eye primer is a must for wearing eye shadow, to help make the colors more vibrant as well as keeping them to last longer throughout the day w/o creasing. you can find pretty cheap eye primers at the drugstore, but a popular one is the Elf eye lid primer, which is like $2, or somewhere around that, and another popular one is the Urban Decay Primer Potion, which is a bit pricey, if you're going to "experiment" with money too..

there's other types of cosmetics, like:
- blush
- eye shadow
- eye liner
- mascara
- lipstick
- lip gloss
- highlight
- primers
- foundation
- concealer

i'm sure you've already heard all of them though.. o:

Me - i don't wear makeup at all, haha. i wear a little blush just to give a healthy glow and a dab of natural looking lipstick because i'm not a lip gloss fan, and that's about it, really. :)

i watch alot of beauty guru videos, that's why I know a bit about this.. i'm no expert, though! **

as a beginner,
maybe, go for something easy and cheap to use, because you're beginning, and who knows, you might not like it.. o: once you do like it, you can buy some bigger brand names!

Now, just because it's cheap, doesn't mean it's not good.

Wet n Wild Color Icon eye shadow palettes are highly pigmented and last a while, i've seen tons of beauty gurus rave about them. Wet n wild is a pretty great brand too, when it comes to eye makeup, i've seen.

Revlon makes cream eye shadow quads that i think are around $8, and people use them for bases, but you can obviously still use them as eye shadows, because they're quite pigmented enough.

ELF makes alot inexpensive makeup as well, if you don't really want to spend much! some of their products can be a hit & miss, though!

Revlon makes the best lip products, especially their revlon lip butters, which are pretty much moisturizing lipsticks.

i love Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blushes! they blend easily and are quick to use.

I definitely think you should try Benefit Cosmetics. I own a few blushes (cream, powder, cheek stains) from them, and i haven't been disappointed.

like i said, i'm not much of an expert, but i hope this has helped you, someway, somehow. ^-^

What is the difference between punk, goth, emo, and scene? not just how they look but what they're about

Admin 26.03.2010. 13:00

Emo-originally it was a great music genre that lasted in the 80's and the 90's. This is the real form of the emo genre. This form of the emo genre came from the punk genre. From 2000-present, emo music pretty much became watered down by the mainstream. All of these new "emo" bands you see on tv these days are not real emo. There is no such thing as an emo person. At all. There are only fake emos, you know the kids that cut, cry, wear tight clothes, cover their face with their hair, etc. Emo kids are nothing but sad conformists following a stupid, mainstream trend. If you are emo, you are not unique. At all. Therefore, it is impossible to be an emo/punk or an emo/goth.

Goth- Came from the punk, new wave, no wave, and post-punk genres. Goth has very close similarities to punk. It is more than possible to be a goth/punk and is more than acceptable. Pioneers in goth music are: Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, and Bauhaus. Goths find the beauty in darkness because seeing too much of the light can blind you. (think of conservative christians and how hyppocritical they really are-too much of the light will blind you). Goths enjoy are, literature, film, victorian fashion, mythology, and tend to be very religious. There are many types of goth and many elements of the goth subculture. Goths tend to be pacifist.

Punk- started in the 70's. Credit for the punk movement is given to The Ramones, but credit to the genre goes to Iggy and the Stooges and other protopunk bands. Punk emphasizes the DIY ethic and anti-consumerism (as does goth) and is all about staying true to yourself no matter what, and standing up to others that get in your way. It's all about being independent. Punks can be violent, but there is a large number of pacifist punks as well. You can be any religion you want to be punk, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You can believe is any form of government. Most punks tend to be anarchists (peaceful or violent) and socialists. It is possible to be a conservative punk, like Johnny Ramone. There are many types of punks that believe in different stuff and many elements of the punk subculture. Punk=unique, goth=unique, emo=poser.

Emo stands for Emotive Hardcore. Originally it referred to dark post-hardcore and slowcore groups ranging from Pinback to Fugazi, and its fans were a mixture of typical hardcore with more of a depressed slacker feel. Nowadays, it refers to poser crap like Fall out Boy or Tokio Hotel, and its rabid teenybopper cult wears short, asymmetrical black hair, facial piercings, and tight metrosexual pants. They mostly just lurk around the bargain bin at Hot Topic.

Punk is a philosophy and aesthetic founded in the 70s focusing on far-leftist activism, confrontational attitude, and a back-to-basics, patched-together feel. Though some punks are conservative, they're more military brats and libertarians then your Rush Limbaughs and Dick Chenies. Punk music is focused on a DIY simplicity, fuzzy distortion, and rough-hewn vocals that combined garage rock with political activism, shock tactics, and quick, thumping rhythms. Indivuality is valued highly, with items such as unusual hairstyles, bondage pants, faux-leather, political buttons, and cheap guitars covered in decals being the "norm". More downbeat, experimental punk groups like Sonic Youth & Joy Division are known as post-punk.

Goth is a counterculture themed around classic horror, Victorian culture, industry, dark romance, fantasy, and an introspective, melancholy elegance. Gothic music ranges from dissonant, metallic onslaughts to sullen electronica to morbidly theatrical cabaret to world inflected, darkly sensual sounds. The religion of goths range from Wicca to Catholicism, and despite their interest in the existential and dark, or perhaps because of it, they are nonviolent and often vegetarian or vegan. For the aesthetic, it varies, but usually lace, dark red, whimsically creepy stuff, leather, catholic jewelry, pagan or occasionally demonic jewelry, veils, cloaks, and lots of black and pale makeup.

What are some fiction story ideas? I'm just board and want to write a fiction story but i cant think of any thing interesting. ANYTHING will do, I don't care what just give me ideas and that would be GREAT! thanks. :)

Admin 02.06.2011. 21:35

You have a lot of options here. These are some of my favorites:

1) Science fiction. Aliens, space, monsters, other planets....If you are a very creative person you will LOVE science fiction! You can dream up whatever kooky planet and whatever crazy aliens. To make good science fiction you might want to read up on biology or physics but this is easy stuff to learn and all you need to know are the basics and you can write good science fiction!

2) Fantasy. Dragons, witches, magic spells, unicorns...All this would be considered fantasy. Kind of like science fiction, the possibilities are endless. You can make up your own world, your own creatures and you make your own rules. Anything can happen here!

3) Horror. This is one of the most FUN genres to write in...It can have as much blood, guts and gore as you want. You don't really have to worry about offending anyone and you can get as sick and twisted as you want. People who read horror will LOVE the gore! All you need is a good, scary enemy. This can be a creature, a psycho person, a ghost, a demon, a vampire or whatever you find scary.

4) Mystery. This is a fun genre as well. The only thing with a mystery is, it requires more thought. You have to be detail oriented and you must have a good story. The most common kind is the "whodunnit?" where a person gets killed and your main character must solve the mystery. You might have to educate yourself a bit on crime and forensics but in the end it will be worth it!

5) Action. This is my absolute favorite thing on the planet to write about! I love writing fight scenes and I love writing about warriors, ninjas, revenge and bloody battles! The plot can be pretty much anything...they main thing is, you need an enemy and an event that causes conflict. Writing a detailed fight scene can be tough. You must be able to picture the action clearly in your mind. Sometimes I even act out the scene with action figures just so it makes sense. Whatever the plot is, your focus should be on the battles, weapons and strategy.

5) Adventure. This genre can be combined easily with action, fantasy or science fiction. Many good stories are an adventure...A journey a hero must take to find a person or thing of value. A classic example of an adventure-action story would be "Indiana Jones" In all the films, Indy must find some treasure, fight some enemy, rescue a lady, save a villiage...

6) Romance. This is probably my least favorite genre! I enjoy a good romance book but so many of them are cheesy and cliche. They almost always involve some impossible love story where the characters face obstacles then get together in the end. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast are all examples of classic romance tales. The ending is often predictable. If you can come up with an original story, a great romance story is possible.

So these are just a few of the many topics you can write about. The possibilities are endless! What makes a subject interesting is your characters and your spin on the idea. Almost no ideas are truly new. The thing that makes it fresh and interesting is you. If you love a certain topic or character this comes through in your writing. Start with things you love...Go from there! Best of luck! I hope this helps!

How do I stop caring about how I look? One of my close friends is very pretty. When we go out she usually attracts attention, some of the guys would check her out and stuff like that. Last time we were buying something from an old lady, that lady said out loud how beautiful my friend is. And, I don't know if it's just my imagination but sometimes she seems to get bigger portions in some restaurants when we eat out.

I know it's petty to care so much about this, and although I try not to, it still affects me whenever we're out and someone would say 'nice' or 'beautiful' and I know he'd be talking about my friend. I like my friend a lot, she's one of the nicest person I know. And it's not as if I've ever felt like I would want to change how I look or anything. I like my face just fine. But sometimes when others are complimenting her when we're both out together, I tend to feel a bit insecure, invisible even, walking beside her. How do I stop feeling this way?

Admin 29.06.2013. 14:19

Start caring about WHO you are.

Do you make choices that you respect yourself for? Do you have ideals about how people should be with each other, about how people should live their life, about how people should treat the environment? Do you LIVE your ideals? Even more importantly, do you live your ideals even when it's difficult to live them?
THIS is how you start caring about who you are.

The easiest way to start caring about who you are is to start volunteering somewhere that you actually help others. Where you can be caring and empathetic and provide a service for someone .. and actually see that it puts a smile on their face. Or know that your effort has made a difference in their life, no matter how small or temporary your contribution was.
THIS makes you feel really good about who you are.
Mankind evolved as a tribal animal, and the success of the tribe depended on each individual's ability to care ... it's genetically bred into us to care, and this is why we feel so good when we DO care about others.

On the flip side, psychologists tell us that the more self-focused we are, the unhappier and more neurotic we will be.

When you care about who you are, when you approve of who you are .. when you get up in the morning and look at yourself over the sink into the bathroom mirror, what you SEE is someone who is a fine person, someone who you really like, approve of, and feel good about. And it has nothing to do with the shape of your nose or how long your eyelashes are. Your physical looks become less important.

And here are some cognitive self-statements that are true that can help redirect your attitudes:
1. The more attractive a girl is, the more a guy like her ONLY for how she looks.
This means he doesn't care about who she is or what she wants out of life. It makes a not-very-good marriage for the woman, and that is why prettier women are much more likely to end up getting divorced.

2. Your physical appearance is not some "achievement" .. you are born with genes that shape your face and body. Yes, we can improve how we look through exercise and make-up .. but the basics of beauty are accidents of birth. And NO occasion for being proud. And not being beautiful is no occasion for being ashamed.
What we CAN control, what we CAN be proud of is who we make ourselves to be, inside. THAT is something that is a significant achievement.

3. A comment on how you look is not a comment on your value or worth as a person. If anything, by focusing on exterior things, they are minimalizing any true value.

Not sour grapes here. I'm an older woman, once "so beautiful you took my breath away" kind of looks when I was young.
I would have preferred to be loved for who I WAS rather than how I looked. And at our 40th class reunion, most of the pretty girls were divorced at least once .. while the less-attractive ones were the ones with lasting marriages and no divorces. They were also pretty-much "richer" financially (divorce only makes both parties poorer), seeing as they'd had one and only one marriage.

If you feel invisible when walking with your friend, understand that you are making this feeling yourself, through your inner attitudes.
And if you cannot overcome these attitudes (and we don't always succeed at this, so don't feel bad if you don't) .. then stop going places with her. No sense hitting your thumb with a hammer if it's already sore .. no sense hanging with someone who makes you feel worse about yourself. Just be very clear that you are the one who causes the insecurity and the solution has to come from inside yourself .. never blame another person for our own feelings.

Looking Better For School ( End Of August)? I am 13 and I weight 110 pounds I'm 5'3 and a Cheerleader I have black hair and brown eyes is there anything I can do to look better for school??
i wear makeup straighten my hair and i refuse to get hightlights my friend who has black hair it did not look good

Admin 16.06.2009. 05:38

Remember that looking good isn't just physical in appearance it's also how you carry yourself basics:

# Smile! Making the effort to smile every once in a while will make you feel better about yourself, and make others feel positive. You can even practice smiling in the mirror--it'll be a great start to your day and set you off in the right mood. But always remember to have brushed your teeth and have a great smelling breath! You never know who is appreciating your smile! And Boys always love a smile!
# Take care of your skin. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize, preferably with a moisturizer that contains an SPF of at least 15. Don't use a facial scrub more than three times a week, as this can irritate the skin, especially if you have acne. For people with oily or combination skin, masks can help draw excess oil from your skin. Don't use these beyond once a week, since you don't want to strip all your natural oils away. Exfoliating, which is removing old skin layers, can certainly help by lessening blemishes that resulted from acne. A blackhead scrub works too.
Try going for that fresh summer look by not plastering your face with makeup, but lightly adding it here and there. Makeup is made to enhance your features, not cover them. Apply an eyeliner- eyeliner will add definition to your eyes. Don't wear any shocking colors during the day. Keep natural during the day and play it up during the night. If you have pimples or other face irritation, use an acne formula that won't dry out your skin. Nobody likes scale-like skin.
# Pick clothes that flatter your body, but don't go too far. People get the wrong impression if you show too much skin.

* You can be cute and look conservative at the same time! Try a pair of jeans and a nice sweater,or a skirt, make sure your shoes go with the outfit.
* Flatter a 'blah' outfit with accessories, but don't over-accessorize! Try a headband or a cute necklace. Remember, less is more.
* Buy clothing that flatters you, so as to create a lean, curvaceous line.

# Take care of your hair. Get it trimmed regularly (search on-line for colors and styles that best fit your face shape and hair type).

* Always brush it, but not too much. Try straightening it to the side, or curling it wavy.
* If you wish to dye your hair, make sure it's one that suits your skin tone--two shades darker or lighter than the natural color of your hair.

# Stand up straight. This makes you look like you respect yourself, and others will follow your lead. Plus, it has the visual effect of smoothing out any bulges that aren't particularly flattering. Posture is important and can make you look more attractive.
Understand the value of inner beauty. There are "pretty" people in this world, but beauty is common. After talking to a few of them, you can begin to think that they aren't so pretty. A bad attitude towards others can make you seem really ugly inside, and make people stop paying attention to who you are on the outside.

# #*So remember that all the makeup in the world won't help if you are unhappy and negative towards others.

* Respect yourself, respect others and you will feel and look great.

# Feel good about yourself. When you feel good, you look good. Have confidence.

* People are attracted to and feel comfortable with people who respect themselves. Liking yourself and respecting yourself doesn't mean you are conceited, it just shows others that you are happy about your appearance.
* A fun, light personality makes everyone comfortable and makes you more approachable.
* Be yourself, be warm to others, and feel great. Soon enough, others are bound to notice.

# If your friends give you positive compliments, don't try to change them into negative ones, accept them and use them to make you feel even better. Expressing a modest "thank you" is much healthier than putting yourself down.
# Exercise. Everyone loves someone who respects themselves and cares for their body. Looking great doesn't mean makeup and clothes and all that jazz, it means feeling good about yourself and staying healthy.

* Exercise for an hour or half hour at the least every day, and drink 8 glasses of water daily. The water helps you get a nice glow in your skin and makes your complexion much clearer.
* If you don't have time to get to the gym one day, try incorporating 40 minutes of brisk walking - this can be as simple as walking around on coffee and lunch breaks for 20 minutes at a time or even walking to work or school instead of driving or taking the bus.
* Any sports that you find interesting are nice, but if you don't play a sport find an exercise that fits you.

# Get enough sleep. This will help you to always look your best. Regular sleeping patterns help your body to effectively regenerate and feel great the next day! Avoid sleeping on your face, this will cause wrinkles.
# Body brush every day. Body brushing is just when you get a plastic

what do guys admire about a girl??? ....and pleeeasse dont say boobs, butt, legs, attractivness or anything of a physical nature k, ta *-*

Admin 20.12.2006. 03:28

Here is the definitive list:

1. That she doesn't try to change me.
2. That she doesn't try to correct me.
3. That she accepts me as I am.
4. That she offers help or advice only when I ask for it.
5. That she allows me to be alone when I am overwhelmed and not have to talk.
6. That she shows me she needs me.
7. That she shows me she trusts me.
8. That she shows me she appreciates me.
9. That she tries to understand me.
10. That she expresses her admiration for me.
11. That she shows approval of me.
12. That she encourages me.
13. That she loves what I do for her.
14. That she never argues with me.
15. That she only communicates in a loving and accepting manner.
16. That she doesn't fight.
17. That she doesn't run away when we face problems but talks them out.
18. That she doesn't pretend everything is ok when it isnt and stuff her feelings.
19. That she doesn't just give in and sacrifice all the time to make peace and then becomes unhappy later, but expresses her needs, interests and concerns in a loving manner sh we can both be happy.
20. That she can maturely discuss the pros and cons of our issues, our differing views, and conflicting feelings without going beserk.
21. That she is accepting and cool when she asks for my support and I am not able to give it.
22. That she writes me letters expressing her real feelings (all of them) from time to time so that I can know what is going on inside of her and respond or just understand.

There you have 22 non-physical things to admire in an emotionally mature girl.

Here are some more:

1. Beauty (skin, hair, nails, clothing, accessories)
2. Wealth (the more the better)
3. Strength/Influence
4. Intelligence
5. Detachment
6. Fame

Those are the externals.

1. Her thoughts (she is thinking of you)
2. Her feelings (she is in love with you)
3. Her desires (she wants you)
4. Her waking moments are absorbed in you
5. Her sleep time she dreams of you
6. She considers herself yours "I am yours"
7. She considers you her's "You are mine"

Her name invokes images of passion.
Her personal qualities are sublime and sweet.
She performs amazing activities.
She surrounds herself with beautiful friends like her.
She has the latest and hottest props (mobile, gadget, etc)
She is from a wealthy notable family.
Has a high degree of education.

(A lot falls under qualities, but no time to enumerate)

Within this general range of qualifications there will be various types of feelings, and then there are also different types of men. Some prefer one over the other. So there is no specific thing you can say generally aside from the above.

Yet, some men will be attracted to poor girls and not rich. Some ignorant girls and not learned. There is no absolute. But these are the basics.

The final answer is that all girls are potentially sexy, it just takes the right guy to come along and notice and appreciate her.

There is a guy that is going to appreciate you the way you are, but will you similarly appreciate him? Sometimes, not always.

Focus on being chaste and faithful to your husband because that is one vitue that never wears out with time like most of these others and it is generally the most valued by men and women alike.

10 points please :)

I'm retarded when it comes to math. What should I do? Do I really need math to get by in life?

I'm an adult and sometimes even basic addition seems like a huge giant obstacle for me. Formula's? Forget about it. I CANNOT remember them. I dont even know how I got through high school. They probably gave me pity points.

No matter how hard I try I cannot learn anything math related.

Anything dealing with numbers gives me a problem.

This is making life in general hard for me.

What should I do?

Are there any special classes for people who are severely bad at math?

Admin 16.12.2008. 09:09

Yep. You will need Maths to get by life. Simple addition, consumer arithmetic and algebra can be useful in everyday life. You mentioned that your Maths ability is making life in general hard for you... yeah.. so maths is really important, so maybe you should retouch your concepts again. Buy some books to learn.

To do well in Maths, you have to learn to love it. Keep practicing and ask questions. You may also need a motivational teacher. For people like you, yes, there are special classes for you. These classes address problems with people who are terrified of Maths.By being surrounded by people alike you, you will learn a lot.

maths isn't really that hard. To memorise formulas, try to paste formulas all over your bedroom wall. This works for formulas that you want - memorised by face value. Another method is to prove every formula. If you want to truly appreciate and beauty and elegance of Mathematics, then try to prove every formula. Try to understand where all these elegant formulas have come from. Once you have mastered the concepts, memorising formulas will be very easy.

Maths is all about building blocks from past material. Maths stretches on and on. To be able to do advanced maths, you must first know your basics. I think that you should return back to your basics and revise them. I have known this from my own experiences. I go to a school with gifted and talented classes, and I am in the top Mathematics class. The teacher makes us accelerate Maths - we do work that is two years ahead of us, without learning the basics beforehand. Because of this, I only scored in the 93rd percentile in my Statewide exams. I honestly think that learning the basics is more important then going further. You should probably start off with your basic addition. You cannot learn anything math related right now, because you had a bad start in Maths. Start all over again. Yes, I know the problem of dealing with numbers. I used to hate maths and get a headache from simple addition problems. After doing a few minutes of Maths work, I had to always read a book afterward because I couldn't stand Maths.. but look how far I have gotten to now! I am sure that you can do the same.
