The automobile is a great, wonderful means of transportation. It has a dual nature, as it tries to be aesthetically pleasing and highly functional, and these have not always been recognized, or fully appreciated. At the beginnings of the automobile there was an emphasis on function rather than form. The mechanized contraption was considered an oddity, a nuisance, a strange diversion from the realm of transportation on four wheels that was solidly tied to the very reliable horse. The new mechanized thing was seen to be an aberration by many. It was neither attractive nor particularly useful.
But there were a lot of people who took the motor vehicle more seriously and that is why there was a growing awareness of its potential functionality. Those people saw its future as a serviceable “workhorse” and never thought about its appearance. It may have looked like a toy on wheels, and it may have had its limits, but it was a machine and newly invented machines are usually functional, not pretty.
Later, and of course step by step, people realized that the beauty reserved for the more elegant of the horse-drawn carriages of the period might be applied to these machines. When that happened, it was only a matter of time until the creation of vehicles with a flair for appearance. These things were being made as individual one-of-a-kind conveyances, and a distinguishing appearance might was a significant means for showing off your building skills. And so we got to appreciate the form as well as function in the automotive world.
