Jacksonville International Airport to track luggage

Jacksonville International Airport, Florida is to begin tracking luggage with radio frequency identification tags.

The new technology is expected to increase security and help reduce the amount of lost luggage. The small, paper-thin devices known as RFIDs use electronic readers to record data stored within microchips. The chips are encased in plastic tags laced with metal bands that serve as antennas, which transmit signals to monitoring devices.

The system - to be installed by the autumn - will allow the Transportation Security Administration to quickly locate dangerous bags, while airlines believe the technology will help them reduce the cost of rerouting misplaced bags.
