Starting A Business 1 - 3

Starting a Business - (1 - 3)

Depending on the reason for you to start a
business, a retail store, an Internet store, a
service business, a home based business or any
other kind.

If you're like I was, you have lots of questions:

- Business licenses, or permits, what do I
need?
- Form of entity? What should the business
be, A
sole proprietorship, partnership,
Corporation, etc?

And

- Accounting or bookkeeping, what should I
do?

I struggled to find answers to my questions and I
was surprised that there were very few web sites
provided me the information I needed.

I spent hours and hours on the computer searching
for information on starting a business.

I was often frustrated by what I found regarding,
the licenses I needed, the form of business entity
most appropriate and the accounting or bookkeeping
software most suitable to me.

I hope to be able to save you from the
frustrations which plagued me.

Licenses and permits?

What licenses and permits apply me, or the
business, when I start a business?

Most businesses, especially business that
involve selling products, require a State Tax ID.

In my state applying for and obtaining a “Sellers
Permit” also provides you with a Tax ID.

The way that you obtain a State Tax ID may be
different for the state, province, or country that
you are in.

After a lot of searching the Internet, I finally
found the information I needed.

Unfortunately it took me hours and hours ‘glued’
to my monitor, the phone book and the phone.

The site that I found, showed me the city, county,
state, licenses and permits I
would need.

www.sba.gov/hotlist/license.html

This web site directs you to each state within the
US and may be able to provide information on the
counties and cities as well.

If you're in Canada or Great Britain you can use
these sites

canada.gc.ca/maine.html

or

www.sbs.gov.uk

If you have additional questions you are always
able to go to your favorite search engine and
search for "business licenses" + "state, province,
or country”

When you are searching the Internet, you will also
find many services that will file the necessary
forms for you.

You save time, but it can be costly.

I found it very easy and much less expensive to
file the forms and apply for the permits on my
own.

Many of the forms can be filled out and applied
for directly on the Internet.

Doing it on your own is much less expensive,
however, if you don't have time, a service would make sense.

When this article next continues I'll go over
forms of the business entity, the advantages and disadvantages and what is best for your business.

This article on STARTING A BUSINESS? is not
"professionally" advising you on business matters, or business agreements. If you have any concerns in regards to your business, I would advise
consulting an attorney.
