IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. The IELTS Exam is a common entrance requirement by Australian, British, Canadian and New Zealand Universities for their secondary, vocational and training programs. The IELTS Exam is designed to assess the language ability of Candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the language of communication.

The IELTS Exam has different kind of modules catering to the specific needs of different Candidates.

A Candidate has the option to select either the Academic Reading and Writing Module or the General Training Reading and Writing Module depending on the requirements of their sponsor or receiving institution. The Academic Reading and Writing Module evaluates whether a Candidate is proficient enough in the English Language to study or train in the medium of English at an Undergraduate or Postgraduate level.

The significance of the General Training Reading and Writing Module is that, it evaluates the basic English Language skills of a person so that he can easily communicate and survive in an English speaking society. The General Training Reading and Writing Module is suitable for Candidates who are going to English speaking countries to complete their Secondary Education, to undertake work experience or training programs. This General Module is not meant for Candidates intending to study at a degree level, or for immigration purposes.


All Candidates must complete four Modules to complete an IELTS Exam - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Based on his performance in these tests, he is rated by a Band, this Band is reflected on an IELTS Test Report Form (TRF). All Candidates take the same common Listening and Speaking Modules, while the Reading and Writing Modules will differ depending on whether the Candidate has chosen to take the Academic or General Training Versions of the Test.
