When Levi Strauss began manufacturing the riveted pants we now call “jeans” in the 1870s, they were originally made from a material then known as “jean”, a cotton, linen and/or wool blend material that had evolved somewhat since it was imported to America in the late 1700s. Levi Strauss continued to manufacture their trademarked jeans well into the 21st century, when other companies began challenging for a share of the market.
