Open Water Movie Review

I saw Open Water at the DVD store and was in the mood for a chilling thriller. I had the house to myself and a big plate of homemade nachos and got myself ready to get even more paranoia in my life. Now, I had no idea of the "Sundance Buzz" or it being an Indie Film. When I read the box it sounded like a couple was floating around in the ocean helpless with the chance of getting eaten by sharks. This somehow reminded me of Cast Away. (Not alot of props, just strong acting, and believable dialogue). I was ready for a decent movie.

Now after the first 5 minutes, I noticed the camera was shaking and it looked like it was filmed with a Sony Handycam. It looked extremely unprofessional and I almost stopped the movie to watch golf. This movie was CLEARLY made on a budget, which is fine....I wouldnt say it was the Blair Witch of the Water, but close.

The story engulfed me. It seemed like a real couple, with real issues, on a real vacation. After getting caught up in the characters, the suspense and intensity grew and grew. The story was well done and I can see why alot of critics liked it. If you are looking for a cheesy Jaws movie this isnt for you. If you dont like movies which theres alot of talking, dont buy this. (They are floating for 1.5 hrs!). If you can appreciate a good movie telling a REAL story with some intense scenes, the Open Water is for you.
