A few days ago I was reading an article about the chances of succeeding online that had me thinking. Did you know that out of every 100 websites probably only about 5 of them will be successful?

Most of this can be blamed on the site owners themselves. A lot of people put up a website with a few products and expect the dollars to start rolling in soon after. Not. That is the easiest way for you to fail.

Several years ago when I built my first website, I almost became a victim of the “easy does it syndrome”. After a few months online, I noticed that I was getting very few visitors and I began to worry.

After some extensive research, I found out that the only way to generate traffic was to roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty. It has been a roller coaster ride every since I started.

You see, many persons started in a more favorable position than I did. A lot of them had the resources readily available at a moment’s notice, which was a privilege for me to have. And please I am not complaining, just letting you know where I am coming from.

Access to a credit card, internet sessions and having a computer is beyond the average Jamaican. So what was the son of a market vendor getting into?

Most marketers have a professional website with a domain name and the like. I started with a Geocities website that I still have at present. Now if you are acquainted with online marketing, you would know that is a cardinal sin. But I still went ahead with it anyway.

I utilized various marketing techniques to channel traffic to my website. Due to obvious limitations, my traffic is nowhere in Yahoo’s region but I receive several hundred page views per week for my efforts.

Along the way I have been insulted, ridiculed and flamed by some marketers who somehow don’t appreciate my contributions. But you know what, that doesn’t bother me at all. I need it.

That’s what makes me strong and resilient in my pursuit of success. And you can do it too, even better that I did. With the right guidance and knowledge you can make it in a shorter time span.
