The Golden retriever breed is generally a large breed of dogs. Originally, this breed was developed to be used in hunting and retrieve a shot waterfowl and upland games. They were bred to have a soft mouth for the advantage of the retrieve game as well as a natural love for water. The golden retriever breeds adopts easily which employs them to variety of roles in servicing such as illegal drug detection, guide dogs, search and rescue dog, and hunting dog.
The temperament of this dog towards a stranger is the same as in his owner. Some says that golden retriever would lick the hands of any intruder as it would on its owner. This merely says that goldens are not among the best guard dogs. Goldens are indeed very charming. They are powerful dogs with an extremely sweet face. The texture of their coat is soft and flat, although sometimes it can be wavy with feathering. The shade of their coat runs from cream to gold. Ideally, golden retrievers must weigh between 65 to 75 pounds for males and 55 to 65 pounds for females. The ideal height should be between 22 to 24 inches for the male breeds and 21 to 23 inches for the female.
Generally golden retrievers are kind, friendly and confident. A display of hostility and aggression in golden retrievers either towards people or any animal is definitely unacceptable. On the other hand being extremely timid or nervous is also unacceptable in this breed. Typically, goldens are calm and obedient. They are highly intellectual as compared to other breeds of dog. These traits make them the most ideal family dog. Goldens are also great around kids.
As the name says, golden retrievers love to play fetch. They would eagerly fetch and chew anything in sight. They are highly energetic and needs a regular exercise. It is a must for goldens to indulge in different physical activities so as not to bore them and in order to avoid obesity. Golden retrievers gets bored easily, and this might lead to frustration. And trust me; the least that you would want to happen to your retriever is for them to be frustrated. If goldens would lack the necessary exercise that they need daily, they will not be able to perform at their best.
Grooming is also very important in keeping your golden retriever in good shape. These breeds shed their coats all year round, thus, their coats needs to be trimmed regularly. Grooming is required at least once a week. Regular ear cleaning is also required in order to avoid ear infections.
