Writing Poems Aimed At Children

When it comes to writing poems for kids/children it is important that you do not use big words as small children will not know what they mean and they will not understand the poem at all, so make sure you use simple to understand words and phrases.

Now every kid loves animals and fluffy things, even toys. It is extremely important that you write about something that will want to make the child read the poem to start with. Most children may not know that fact they are poem, they may think of them as short stories but it will make them want to read your poem if you write about something they like.

I have included a poem below that my good friend Dave has let me use, he is a poet and he specials in kids poems and dedicates his spare time doing this on a website.

You can even get your own kid to write a poem or short story and see what they come up with, you may be quite surprised with what things they imagine for how young your child is.

'Animal Rights March' by Dave Donicci.

''I'm in front,'' trumpeted the Elephant,
''To show them all the way.''
''I'll tell them what to do,'' said the Cockatoo,
''They'll hear just what I say.''

''What did he say?'' squawked the Jay
Cupping his wing to his ear.
''You heard,'' chirped the Blackbird,
''Everything was perfectly clear.''

''Miaow,'' mooed the Cow,
Confused by recent events.
''You're not a Cat,'' sneered the Rat,
''You're one of those odd ruminants."

''Now, all in a row,'' croaked the crow,
''Order we must restore,''
''But where?'' growled the Bear,
Scratching his head with his claw.

''Over here,'' called the Deer,
Sniffing the air more and more.
''I'll stay in my house,'' yawned the little Dormouse,
''I'm already thoroughly bored."

''STOP RIGHT THERE!'' roared the Lion,
''This march will not take place,''
''The rules of the jungle are clear'',
''Now all of you, ABOUT FACE!''

So that was the end of the march,
About rights and needs and desires,
Brought to an end by the King,
His sons, his knights and his squires.

When you have written your poems there are websites that let you upload your poem and you can get feedback and review on how to make them better and work on improving yours.
